Michelle (bookexaminer) | 6 comments If you’ve ever thought a Twilight versus Harry Potter debate could only end with Twi-hards and Potter heads screaming at each other like banshees, you’ll need to take a look at the well-argued and intelligent responses in the Team Twilight versus Team Potter debate: http://www.examiner.com/x-562-Book-Ex...
Who knows, it might give you a different perspective on a series you previously dismissed.

Very interesting article. Thanks for sharing. In my opinion, this debate will never have an answer. It really all comes down to a persons preferences.

message 3: by Paige (new)

Paige | 203 comments i thought the article was interesting too. and i doubt it will even have one answer either. even thought i loooove twilight. i thought the harry potter team did better, because harry potter really does have better character development, but i really enjoyed that article :)

I'm all for Harry Potter, but I haven't read Twilight and I have no desire to.

message 5: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa (goodreadsannalisa) Paige, Thanks :) (since I had lengthy novels on those debates).
Pandy, if you don't think you'll like Twilight, you won't. It's exactly what you think. The girl who lent me Twilight back when it was only Twilight told me how corny the idea sounded but that it was good and I did like it. But by the end of the series, it's exactly what you think. It's not great literature.

message 6: by Asne (new)

Asne i totally agree with Annalisa. i too read Twiligh and it was good, but the rest of the books went downhill.

Albert (chok) | 9 comments "The main reason closing Deathly Hallows is so hard is not because we mourn the tragedy but because we have grown right along with these characters and we hate to see their story end."

This the best point I read...

message 8: by Gunjari (new)

Gunjari (irajnug) | 732 comments yeah. there is no other way to put it. the fact that we love some characters and hate jkr for killing them off, or hate some characters so much that we shiver when they commit injustice against harry potter and his comrades, just shows what a great author jo is that she can bring them to life like that. and the fact that she even gives our protagonists their own bad elements shows us how real they are as well. nobody's perfect. :)

message 9: by Albert (new)

Albert (chok) | 9 comments What's great about jkr is her ability to connect all the small and complicated plots.

message 10: by Rutvi (new)

Rutvi (rutviravani) I think that the twilight semms like a great book... but i will NEVER betray Harry Potter. let me just say that hp will always be on top of twilight and that HARRY POTTER RULES!!!!!

I love that article!Very detailed.

message 12: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) Harry will always be special, because we grew up with it. Twilight was over in a year or two. It lacked that epic-ness Harry has.

message 13: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) :)

I read that article, and the only real point that the Twilight people used was that it was a romance, and romances live longer then wizards. They cited Romeo and Juliet as proof.

They fail to see that romances are for, basically, teenage girls. It's a limited fanbase. The Potter fanbase covers all ages and people. We have the better fanbase. We love the story for the story, we're not "omg pwnzor harry is so hawt" most of the time, like they are about Edward.

message 14: by Melyssa (last edited Mar 29, 2009 09:52PM) (new)

Melyssa | 48 comments I saw a video somewhere where a guy went out and polled people waiting to buy the dvd of Twilight and the only reason they could give of why they liked the books/movie was Edward. That's it, nothing else. I guess when there's not much plot in the book, they don't have much choice.

message 15: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) Edward, I admit, is a major part of me liking Twilight. The idea was good. But, if it had ended in one book, if she had been bitten at the end of Twilight, it might have been better.

message 16: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth (lizzardbreath) HARRY POTTER BE ROCKIN!!! :) TWILIGHT BE STINKIN!!! :(

message 17: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) Eloquent.

Both are good, HP is better.

message 18: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth (lizzardbreath) I agree, Both are good books but Harry Potter is better.

Annie (annieiscool13) HP! It was soo much better. I tried to read the Twilight Saga but after Eclipse I just gave up.

message 25: by Fariza (new)

Fariza Romance cannot challenge Magic! hehe.. NEVER

message 26: by Annie (new)

Annie (annieiscool13) lol. I don't really read most romances anyway. That might've been why I did not like the book.

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

I am SO looking at that after school.

message 28: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Yes. See, even their referances died in the end....

Another thing that a lot of people don't catch is that not only is the story lame, but the writing is nothing on J.K's. Stephanie Meyer could definatly use a theseraus. She doesn't have a way with words like Jo does. Therefore, writers also have a stronger argument.

And Harry's epic and has deep meaning behind it. Twilight is merely a romance novel that will fade out of existance in the next ten years.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

Harry Potter is a pinch of everything, while Twilight is a mere love story.

message 30: by Katniss (last edited Apr 20, 2010 01:37AM) (new)

Katniss (katniss1986) | 5 comments Twilight is full of inconsistencies.

And I just don't get it. It's annoying to see all the fuzz made about it. 'cause no one's able to explain what's the point with it.

there're so many lovely written lovestories out there! twilight has nothing. no valuable characters, no consistent plot, it's not exciting, the language is... well. awfull and even the story itself (which might have ended up pretty well) is just lame.

And that's me: loving fantasy and vampires and wizards and all that's "out-of-the-ordinary".

I really was trying to understand why it's so popular, I tried reading a lot from fans, but all they're able to explain is:
"uuuh, edward sparkles, and, and their love is so deep and uh, he's pretty."...

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay. Maybe---MAYBE--if Twilight was well written, it would be a reallly really good book....

But it's not. It's written by the author Stephenie Meyer, who isn't a good author at all..

And to all of you guys out there who ♥ Twilight--here's a question: WHY????

But Harry Potter is a whole nother story... It is well written and well developed and the idea is wonderful and the movies are great

HP Wins!!! Twilight LOSES!!

person (iwasachild) I think everyone needs to look just a bit deeper and then you'll see some of the major themes in Twilight... Twilight really has some good ones if you care to look deep enough... The biggest one being that love conquers all. In Twilight, it was conquering the forbidden romance and James wanting to kill Bella. In New Moon, it was conquering the dangers of the relationship and being away from each other, and the Volturi's ultimatum. In Eclipse, their love conquered another guy in the picture, and Victoria's horde of newborns. In Breaking Dawn it conquered the impossibility of Bella and Edward being parents, and of course, conquered the Volturi at the end.

And I don't understand when people say that Twilight isn't written well. I think it's written very well.

Of course, Harry Potter wins out... there is simply no comparison!! The themes in Harry Potter are too innumerable to name out... and it is just the overall best. So don't think I like Twilight more than Harry Potter, because that is just crazy talk!! I'm just saying that Twilight isn't as bad of a series as everyone says.

I just love Harry Potter wayyyyyyyy more...

Listen to what I found out:

So we all know the rivalry between the two sagas/ series.
So what are some similarities, what are the differences?
Similarities: Both books have 3 main characters, 2 of them guys and 1 girl.
The names. Jacob BLACK- Sirius BLACK. Penelope CLEARWATER- Leah CLEARWATER. VOLturi- VOLdemort

lol! I think that's hilarious :)

message 40: by Stephany (new)

Stephany | 2 comments I'm not a fan of author-bashing - Meyer has her own style, and not all "simple" styles are bad (although LOL at the thesaurus-in-the-book part - made me think of "The Eye of Argon") - but the problem I have with the Twilight series is that the plot is going absolutely nowhere and it's just a huge love saga or whatever. And, you know, most romances actually have plots instead of just one big saga for the sake of a saga - and I just can't bring myself to read through it if I don't know where it's going to go.

HP is definitely on its OWN level though - probably the next best thing since LOTR in terms of impact. Although it's not my favorite thing in the world to just read for the sake of reading, it definitely has the full package ;D

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree, if you're going to make fun of something, make fun of the actual books; not the author.

I totally agree, all authors are different and no one can teach you how to be a "good" author.

Yup. So I guess I'm done in this conversation... Nah!

You could be right on the whole "love conquers all" thing but I don't think most fans see it like that. Most of my friends are Twilight fans and they like just to debate who's hotter with his shirt off: Edward or Jacob. I don't see them talking about any deeper level thinking in the books, whereas with my HP fan friends, we talk all the time about different themes, like family and friends. And, if you want the whole "love conquers all" theme, there would be no place better than the HP series because that's one of the more obvious themes in the series.

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

Have you guys heard of the new movie called "Vampires Suck?" It's a Twilight parody and they basically take the Twilight movie and re-make it into a PG movie that makes fun of Twi. It comes out on August 19th and it looks HILARIOUS. Instead of turning into werewolfs, they turn into chihuahuas. And there is a scene where there are 2 girls and one of them has a shovel and the 1st one yells: "TEAM EDWARD!" and then the 2nd one (with the shovel) yells: "NO TEAM JACOB!" and hits the other girl on the head with the shovel.
