How do you pronounce "Tobias"??

some people pronounce it "tow-b-ay-as" but i pronounce it "to-bee=us"

Apparently I've been pronouncing it wrong, because I've been saying toe-BEE-us. I figured since Toby is a nickname, you'd pronounce it as such...
I Tobee-is is better because Toe-bye-us sounds like the character from arrested development and those two are completely different. I would be soooo grossed out if it was like the guy from arrested development haha
Whatever... I'll just watch the movie when it's out, then read the book again

Well, in the audiobook they pronounce it as Toe-bye-us...
i just used Toby... saved me a bunch of fuss.
Half my friends say toe-bye-us, the other half say toe-bee-us as do I. I suppose it all depends on what your prefer. I do think that toe-bye-us is the correct way to say it, I just think the other way sounds better.
I was really disappointed when I found out his name was Tobias. It just didn't fit him, in my opinion. So I just replace it in my head with "Toby" :)

I'm in the US and I have always heard it pronounced Tuh-bye-us. I have never heard it pronounced differently. It's not that uncommon, so I am surprised at the debate. To-bee-us sounds strange to me.

I don't speak/read with her accent. Don't think it's disrespectful in this context. How many people try to obtain the correct name pronunciations of the old books' characters? What if it's of a different language where the author doesn't appear in the videos to specify the correct ways of pronunciations...It's too much nitpicking for a fictional character...

What if it's of a dif..."I was just stating my personal opinion. You can pronounce it any way you want. Obviously it would be different if the original/intended pronunciation was unknown. In this case it is known. I personally try to pronounce it the way the author did, if that is possible, because I feel that is respectful. I never said anyone else had to agree with me, or that my opinion is law.
When I talk to someone whose first language is something other than English, I still try to pronounce their name the way they do. For example, Javier is "hAH-vee-air" in Spanish, I don't say "Jah-vee-air." I respect the fact that in Spanish the J is silent, even though I do not speak with a Spanish accent. Names are different, they are a representation of the person. Therefore, I think the pronunciation is more important than it would be for other words.

The name Tobias looks Romantic(as in relation to Romance languages), and therefore it should be pronounced like it would be in a Romance language: [toh-bee-uhs] Plus, [toh-beye-uhs] just sounds dumb to me, my way sounds much better and it's easier to pronounce it as [toh-bee-uhs] anyway. HOORAY FOR BEING IN THE MINORITY!!!

Don't you know that it would originate from Hebrew/Greek/Latin, all of which pronounced "i"s as [ee]? If it were to be spelled Tobaius/Tobeius, then yes that would sort of be the correct way. So you mean to say that's we say it, not "how they say it." Not even proper grammar btw(it isn't present tense you want; you want to say "SAID")
Toe-bee-us is a more Romantic pronunciation also, so it just suits the name. Anyone who says otherwise is hereby declared illiterate and not knowledged in the historical ways. Case closed, judgement for the defendant(the toe-bee-us pronunciation). Avē atque valē(please pronounce that proverb the correct Classical Latin way)
Whenever I find out that an author intends a name to be pronounced in a way other than what I'd thought it was, I simply make the mental adjustment and go with what the author intended--even if that goes against my personal preferences. For example, in
The Tortilla Curtain
, there is a character named Kyra. In my head, as I was reading the book, she was KEER-ah to me. Later on, I found out from the author's webpage that he meant her name to be pronounced "KYE-rah." I thought that sounded ugly, but that's what the author intended, so I went with it. In some of William Faulkner's novels, he has a character named Lucas Beauchamp, which I expected to be pronounced as the French would (boh-SHAHM). But I learned that it was actually meant to be pronounced "BEE-chum." Which I found both ugly and puzzling, but again went with it.

It doesn't really matter how you pronounce it. In my mind I call him Four:)
