Laura Most people say Toe-bee-us, but it's actually Toe-bye-us.

Reader 101 all the way throught the books, i pronounced it to-bee-us. But then my mum said that its to-bye-us!!!??? what? i think to-bee-us sounds better and i am sooooooooooo relieved that other people feel the same way!!!!but i will carry on saying it the way i do though!! to-bee-us sounds a lot better and easier to say if you (tris) wanted to say it quckly!!! isnt it just better though????????

Firedragon_1321 I created a character named Tobias and was looking for the proper pronunciation to his name. I found this thread and it looks like people are saying both "Toh-bee-us" and "To-bye-us".
...I'm confused. I guess I'll just stick to "Toh-bee-us" as I've been doing and call it a day. Or just use Toby. (Although it could be interesting if another character calls him "Toh-bye-us"or something. xD)

keith I don't know.. It's probably one of those versatile names, but I go with Toe-bye-us.. I don't know.. Seems much more natural.


Maj-Britt It is a Scandinavian name it is pronounced in Denmark as Toe-Bee-us, becaue the "i" is pronounced as an "e".

Stephanie i say to-bye-us. i just went to dictionary.com and they say to-bi-us but the o is silent so it's like t[the sound of a t]-buy-us

cloudyskye "Tobias" is the Greek version of the Hebrew name "Toviyah", meaning "God is good".

In English you can pick the pronunciation you prefer. There are no rules, just traditions.

Your pronunciation is actually right.its a german name (I'm from Germany)and i would pronunce it just like you did or even without the "e" so "To-bee-us"
