Welcome Mary. Yes that will be one we will probably vote on next month for a read in June.

For reasons known only to them, Pocket has not yet chosen to release Speaks the Nightbird as an ebook, even though they released The Queen of Bedlam. They own the e-rights to it, so the only thing we can do is wait. It may help to click the "I want this on Kindle" link on the Amazon page....

Char I've been clicking on the "I want this on Kindle" button for Straub's Ghost Story for about 1.5 years now.
Still nothing. : (

Chris (chrismccaffrey) Ok, Hunter, that sounds like a good idea. I will check KOBO too since they seem to have a couple of others that they shouldn't have....LOL Those others are Open Road pubs though.

I started with Swan Song (like so many of you) and fell in love with it an read many of his books after that. I started reading them again this year so I am glad to find a group that wants to talk about it!! Thanks for thinking of it!

Bethica (bethicaj) Hey guys. I guess I never made it here to introduce myself. I'm Beth from Iowa and am a night shift RN insomniac. I'd read 24/7 if I didn't have to work and take care of my family. Regretfully, my Kindle broke a few weeks ago and all of the McCammon I have is on that. My little local library isn't good enough to carry something great like McCammon books, even though I asked them to a long long times ago. I'll pay attention and throw in a bit or two here and there, but wont be able to read along with you for at least a few more weeks.

I almost didn't accept the invite and then I realized that I actually have some McCammon books in my home library...AND then I saw that you're reading Bradbury's Something Wicked... I'm going to give my best effort to read that one with you. Thanks for the invite, Lou!

Oh, I'm Michelle. I blog at The True Book Addict (historical fiction/classics/literary fiction focus) and Castle Macabre (horror/speculative fiction focus). Nice to meet you all!

Hi and nice to see you join 2 great stories to read!

message 74: by Angie (new)

Angie (askangie) Like someone else above, I may not be able to finish this month's books. I have to move. Granted, I'm moving from one rental to another across the street; but I have a lot of PURGING to do before I pack up anything. Let me add that I love Bradbury, haven't read "Something Wicked," and am dying to dive into that along with this month's McCammon choice. My "currently reading" shelf includes a book for a work book group I facilitate. Compared to fantasy/scifi, it's a snore fest.

Kylie (kylielowen) | 13 comments Might as well introduce myself I suppose. ;)

I'm a pretty big McCammon fan. I picked up Blue World in a thrift shop of all places maybe 5 years ago. Since then, I have been reading (and re-reading) some of his novels. His stories are amazing sometimes and just okay other times, but his writing is quite amazing. What a way with words!

Wow... never met such a big fan of The Other before! I just added it to the recommendations section here. coincidentally.

The Other is one of my all-time favorites too! I seriously read it ever 3-4 months and have been doing that for years. I liked Harvest Home too, but some of it invokes a dread in me that is a bit too overpowering. Definitely a sign of good writing though.

Have you ever seen the Harvest Home mini-series? It starred Bette Davis (*love*). It was pretty well done. Never released on VHS or DVD, but my husband found it for me someplace taped off TV. I was totally floored! He gave it to me for my birthday 2 years ago with a first edition of the book (I'm a lucky lady to be sure).

I like Tryon in general really. Lady was also quite good-- though not horror at all.

Turns out that we were mistaken. Pocket does not own the ebook rights to NIGHTBIRD. Mr. McCammon does now, so hopefully a publisher will be found soon to get an ebook version of NIGHTBIRD out there!

Kylie -- I LOVED the Harvest Home mini-series and have been looking for it for years -- I can't understand why it's never been released on dvd - I think it was just as good -- and as scary -- as the original tv version of 'Salems Lot, which is one of my all time favs.
I've also read Lady and really liked it ... I think I've read some of his other books but they weren't horror like The Other or Harvest Home. I haven't come across many people who've read them either, so it's nice to know there's at least one out there :)

message 83: by Char (new)

Char I would love to see that mini-series, Joanne. I just love Bette Davis though I haven't seen as many of her movies as I would like.
I wish The OTher or HH were available as e-books as well.

message 84: by Joanne (new)

Joanne Moyer (catwoman56) | 101 comments It was great Charlene -- or I should say I remember it as being great, but I'm pretty sure it has stood the test of time. It was really creepy/scary -- just like the book. and now I'm gonna have to move both The Other and Harvest Home to the top of my TBR pile....

message 85: by Marc (new)

Marc Allen (cramnella) | 10 comments You can watch the whole mini series, "The Dark Secret of Harvest Home" on Youtube. The quality is not great. It is a home made video copy, but it's there.

message 86: by Kylie (new)

Kylie (kylielowen) | 13 comments Joanne, I can see what format my copy of Harvest Home mini-series is in... maybe I could set up a torrent for you to download it or something. The film quality is pretty fuzzy (taped off tv, transferred to digital format), but I'm always happy to share. :) I was surprised it hasn't been released too, if for no other reason than Bette Davis is an enormously famous star!

Have your read Night of the Moonbow? Thought it was well written, but I had trouble getting into it. I had the sinking feeling that something awful was going to happen to the young music prodigy. I want to read it, but it makes me feel ill at the same time. I put it down about 100 pages in and haven't picked it up again. I swear... Tryon is a master of discomfort. In a good way usually.

Charlene, The Other isn't available as an e-book? That just seems bizarre to me.

Marc, it figures that someone made it available on YouTube by now. ;) It is probably the same version I have. How many people would have taped it off tv back in the day and made it available? hehe

Susan Hi, I'm Susan. I just bought They Thirst based on a recommendation, thanks Joanne! I've never read any McCammon before. Should I read the books in a particular order?

message 88: by Aaron (new)

Aaron | 1 comments Hello everyone,

I'm Aaron from Minnesota. I started reading McCammon in the mid-2000s. He has become my favorite author next to King. I've read everything by him other than The Wolf's Hour, The Hunter in the Woods, and Baal. I plan on finishing these by summer's end at the latest.

I'm happy to connect with other McCammon fans and look forward to discussing his work.

Hello, I am the artist formerly known as Isaac LeFevre. I think I've read four McC novels (Swan Song, Boy's Life, Usher's Passing, Mine) and all the stories in Blue World except for Blue World. All of them went instantly to top rankings with me.

This seems like a 12 step meeting, but I don't have to quit anything.

Char It looks like I am going to be a moderator here, at least temporarily. So hello everyone!

I put up a poll for September's group read. It's my first ever poll, so I hope I did it correctly. It said that the poll will be showed on our group home page, but as of yet it's not.
So I keep clicking on "Group Home" to see if it's shown up yet. Then I started chuckling at my own self...if anyone needs a group home, it would be me. :)

Hi Susan ~ sorry but I missed this somehow. The books really don't have to be read in any order but it's probably interesting to start at the beginning and work your way forward if just to see how his writing style changed over the years. The only exception is the Matthew Corbett series, those should be read in order
enjoy!

Algernon (Darth Anyan) | 17 comments thank you Charlene for stirring things up around here. It has been a sleepy hollow lately. I was planning to read some McCammon in Ocotber as a Halloween theme, together with Guy Endore's Werewolf of Paris and Martin Millar's Curse of the Wolf Girl. I'm waiting now to see what is chosen for September
