Hello Everyone, First comment, I am looking for books about Luftwaffe(espicially Eric Hartman),SS and Neonazism. Any suggestion? Thank you :)
Emmy wrote: "Hello Everyone, First comment, I am looking for books about Luftwaffe(espicially Eric Hartman),SS and Neonazism. Any suggestion? Thank you :)"Read this one earlier in the year, it's a good overview of the whole organisation:
The SS: A New History
Look for “A Higher Call” by Adam Makos. It follows a German fighter pilot through and after the war. One of the best I’ve read!
Emmy wrote: "Hello Everyone, First comment, I am looking for books about Luftwaffe(espicially Eric Hartman),SS and Neonazism. Any suggestion? Thank you :)"There is this book on Erich Hartmann that may suit you:
The Blond Knight Of Germany: a biography of... Erich Hartmann by Raymond F. ToliverLuftwaffe:
The German Air Force, 1933-1945: An Anatomy of Failure by Matthew CooperJonny has already suggested a good book on the SS. In regards to the Waffen-SS:
Waffen-SS: Hitler's Army at War by Adrian Gilbert

I keep thinking I should pick up that Cooper book. See how it compares with the work he did on the German Army
Dj, I read my copy in 1985 and from what I can remember quite enjoyed it as well as his book on the German Army.
See my website at www.heatonlewisbooks.com for my titles that may be of interest. Also on Amazon.comLook at my books of Luftwaffe interviews, "The German Aces Speak I and II", complete interviews with Erich Hartmann, Adolf Galland, Johannes Steinhoff, Dietrich Hrabak, Eduard Neumann, Gunther Rall, Wolfgang Falck, and Walter Krupinski.
My book "The Me-262 Stormbird" has interview segments with many of the German and Allied pilots.
"The Star of Africa" cover the life of Hans-Joachim Marseille, full of interview segments with pilots who flew with him, including comments from Franz Stigler, subject of A Higher Call by Makos)
I would also suggest books by Jay Stout, Eric Hammel, Jeff Ethell/Alfred Price, Martin Middlebrook, etc.
I am now working on a book of interviews with American airmen in the ETO, such as James Doolittle, Curtis Lemay, Francis Gabreski, Robin Olds, Edward Haydon, Robert Johnson, etc, all from WW II for Dutto/Penguin/Random House.
I will then work on my Pacific Theater pilots from WW II.
Later I hope to publish my books of interviews with Waffen SS veterans, U-boat commanders, etc.

That's great, I read Hans Rudel's diary this summer and I enjoyed. I will read your books and I am waiting for your new book
(one of my favorite topics). Good Luck

Rudel's book is a classic, and after speaking with a few pilots who knew and flew with him, they agreed that it was very accurate. Gunther Rall and Dietrich Hrabak both agreed Rudel was a very brave man, but they also agreed that he also believed in the propaganda created about him too much.

Yes Mr. Colin, that was a classic book, I agree he was brave but about propaganda.... maybe , you have more info than me, I don't have enough info but let me think and research.
Hi. Does anyone know anything about (or books about) "Churchill's German Army" - German refugees in Britain who volunteered to help the war effort against Germany (mostly Jewish men)? Thanks for any suggestions.

Bomber Command Reflections of War: Battleground Berlin: July 1943 - March 1944It mentions German Jews who flew with the RAF as radio jammers, work that was so secret that even some of the commanding officers of various units were unaware of it. There are notes which point to this book for further reference:
Night Airwar: Personal Recollections of the Conflict Over Europe 1939-45I hope that helps a bit!

Any recommendations on books about WW II armored cars -- not tanks, just armored scout or recce cars (U.S. M8, British Marmon-Herrington, Soviet BA-64, German Sd. Kfz. 234, etc.)? I have all the Ospreys on the subject, but would like to find some personal accounts of armored car crews or operations (Allied or Axis).
That sounds like a hard one. I am trying to recall the title of a book that I saw some years back that covered a British reconnaissance unit in WW2. However while I'm trying to find it there is this one:
(no cover)Bash On, Recce!: Memoirs of a Canadian Armoured Reconnaissance Regimental Officer, 17th Duke of York's Royal Canadian Hussars, 7th Canadian Reconnaissance Regiment, Montreal by Lorne E Stephen

MR9 - It seems like a very niche subject matter in regards to books but I know I saw a fairly extensive book on the subject in a second hand book shop some years ago. I am trying to track down the title. There is this book on the German army reccon units:
Scouts Out: A History of German Armored Reconnaissance Units in World War II by Robert Edwards

Hello everyone!I'm looking for good books on the ETO supply network, post D-Day.
Specifically the Theater Service Forces - European Theater (TSF/EF also known as COM-Z) as well Generals Brehon B. Somervell and John C. H. Lee. If it features the previous history of the short lived US Services of Supply that would be a bonus.
Preferably do not want US Army authored books from the CMH, they are quite exhausting. Something more in the vein of pop history from Beevor/Hastings etc.

There are a few books there on supply, Organization of Supply and Services Vols I and II. And there is one specific to the European theaters. From the site, they are free to download but they come in a PDF format. And I can almost guarantee they will be dry as popcorn farts.
Hi everyone, I am looking for any and all recommendations concerning aviation in and about World War I. Suggestions of military histories, memoirs, and even good novels would be appreciated. I am very interested in the technical side of aviation as well as the military history side of that, so feel free to suggest more technical books as well. Thanks in advance!
Hi Elliot, I found this book a great introduction to the development of aircraft, weapons, engines, technology and tactics and utterly fascinating:
The Great War in the Air: Military Aviation from 1909 to 1921 by John H. Morrow Jr.
Another excellent book which covered the men and machines in the air during the Great War and which was filled full of first-hand accounts was this book:
Marked for Death: The First War in the Air by James Hamilton-PatersonThe chapters included in the book are:
1 Air War and the State
2 Why Biplanes
3 Armed to the Teeth
4 Combat and other Missions
5 The Making of a Flying Man
6 How they Lived
7 Aces
8 Airmen and Medics
9 Parachutes and Fatalism
10 Home Defence
11 Balkans and Mesopotamia
12 Postscript
There is also this book which I thought was pretty good:
No Empty Chairs: The Short and Heroic Lives of the Young Aviators Who Fought and Died in the First World War by Ian Mackersey
And the all-time classic account from a pilot in the Great War was "Sagittarius Rising" by Cecil Lewis.
Sagittarius Rising by Cecil Lewis
Thanks for the quick response, AR. Those books look excellent and I look forward to reading them in the future.

•RAF: The Birth of the World’s First Air Force by Richard Overy•First to Fly: The Story if the Lafayette Escadrille, the Americans Who Flew For France in World War I by Charles Bracelen Flood
•A Flying Fighter: An American Above the Lines in France by E.M. Roberts
I thought I had a couple more so I will add if I find them...
Elliot, a couple more choices:
Horses Don't Fly: The Memoir of the Cowboy Who Became a World War I Ace by Frederick Libby
Hostile Skies: A Combat History of the American Air Service in World War I by James J. Hudson
Marked for Death: The First War in the Air by James Hamilton-Paterson
Look up the WW I aviation books by my friend Jon Guttman, he also has a series with Osprey Publishing.

Manray: Thanks for this recommendation. Just finished the eBook and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thought it nicely blended both a personal story with what was going on in the rest of Holland during the war. I've ordered The Eagle Unbowed and will be starting it as soon as I can. Thanks again.
