Tom Conrad (tom_conrad) | 33 comments Hey,

I heard that if people click on your Amazon page and DON'T buy, your 'conversion rate' falls and your ranking goes down... so tags are great, likes are great but does it simply keep you where you were at or even have a negative effect?

I don't know one way or the other, so just asking/wondering if someone has heard this/knows?

Wow Joyce! I guess I've been missing this as well. I tried keeping up with others comments on it and the only thing I got out of it was that I'm just as lost as you. Want to do more investigating now. If you find out though let me know what's the what.

Richard Stephenson (richard_stephenson) | 24 comments People can search for books. If I'm in the mood for a political thriller, I do a search for it. If you book is tagged "political thriller" it will be displayed in the search results. The higher the count is on one of your tags, the higher up the list it will show up in the search.

Example, my book is number 2 under the tag "dystopian"

http://www.amazon.com/tag/dystopian?r...

Very helpful, Richard! Thanks. Is that just on Amazon or what? I feel so technically and socially challenged!

Hi Joyce, So from what I've just learned about the tagging /liking thing, it's about others going on to Amazon clicking the like button and tagging your book/books. Hope that helps.

So are you advising that many, many (as many as possible) other people tag the same tag and then that gives you a higher rating. And when you say search result, you mean on amazon. And how does the likes play into it? Sorry for all the questions but its still not making sense to me yet. thanks

Yes, you're exactly right on the tagging.

Not entirely sure what the Like does.

message 282: by Kris (new)

Kris (marketing_gurl) | 24 comments holy cow, that took a while but I think I'm caught up too!

So, to answer a few questions, the reason why we *think* it is helpful is that amazon uses complex algorithms to determine popularity. And, the pages that get lots of visits (whether a purchase is made or not) are considered more popular and therefore are ranked higher.

Anyway, by liking the books and the authors, we are ranking them as more popular.

For the tags, they help determine "Best Seller Lists" and categories that Amazon uses to create their own marketing lists. So, if you wrote a book that was set in Florida about an FBI agent that fell in love with a Doctor, you could become a 'best seller' on a "Florida Medical Romance" list...for example. Okay, that is a silly example but the point is, using tags to find your niche audience can greatly improve your placements.

For example, the author that started this thread, Charlotte Abel. She is a 'best seller' in these categories:
#10 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Children's eBooks > Sports & Activities > Sports
#18 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Fiction > Children's Fiction > Sports & Activities

And if you look at her tags, she only has one related to sports...but it has been clicked 89 times...so I'm sure that has something to do with her high placement in those lists.

If you aren't on any best seller lists yet, use your tags to 'nudge' your audience into the direction you want to go. The more specific the better because there are fewer books competing in the "Florida Medical Romance" category. LOL.

And, as far as saying "yes" to the 5 star and 3 star reviews... Well, Amazon always lists "the most helpful" positive and negative review prominently on your reviews page. You want to make sure that your most helpful positives are always a 5 star...rather than a 4 star. And, since a 3 star review is considered "negative", if you have a bad review, you can kinda 'bury' it by getting lots of 'yes, helpful' clicks on a 3 star and that will show as the most helpful negative. Does that make sense?

Good luck!
Kris

message 291: by Ken (new)

Ken Consaul | 180 comments So this thread is about five months old. Everyone has tagged and liked everyone else. Has anyone seen any results that they can attribute to the effort.

Not trying to throw cold water on the project as I can see there are other benefits between authors that can't be quantified. I expect it might be difficult to ascribe any increased sales to the tag and like campaign but any marketing plan should have some quantifiable measure of success or failure.

Report back here by close of business today. (kidding, kidding)

Disclaimer: I haven't been participating but have followed the thread off and on for a while.
