The Clan of the Cave Bear

How To Put This?
I liked the first one and i think 1/2 through the second i said oh no don't do it don't sell out and turn this into a prehistoric romance novel-she didn't hear me
at least that was better than the dune series-it was 4 or 5 before the hard core selling out occured and by that time i was already hooked

She took a long time to write the first one and really made it interesting and challenging. Then she started writing ancient history romance novels.

Like the author seemed to think that the reader would not remember what happened in previous stories...
I must admit that I could not finish the last one as she kept on repeating stuff that I had already read *sigh*

Only read the first two and must admit they're going downhill will persevere and read the third can't promise after that though!

The first two books, are on my shelf (not just my virtual shelf) and have read them again. Though you will probably have to pay me to read the rest though.

I don't mind the recapping of the earlier books, I suppose it caters for a one off reader. We don't always pick up series at the first book :)
I think the ones I like the best are The Plains of Passage and The Valley of Horses

When this book first came out it was one of a kind. I loved the first one I have all but the latest that came out this year. I can say over time it seem like she glamourized Ayla a bit too much.

Yes I did! I also liked the "surviving alone" aspect of the story. A found it a little far fetched how much Ayla "discovered" ie. making fire, stitching wounds etc. but all in all I liked this book the most.

I agree, angela- that was part of what turned me off, that not only was ayla the most beautiful and smartest person in the WHOLE WORLD, she also invented/discovered EVERYTHING! I just couldn't swallow it past a point.

I agree, The Valley of Horses was the best of the bunch.

I agree with you. These are my favourite series books. Don't forget when she wrote them it was in the 1980's and I think the tastes of people are different today. I think because there is so much paranormal on tv and movies, it influences book selling. I like her books because she took me back in time to prehistoric and in my opinion she did a great job of capturing that time. I have reread them twice.

The rest of the series I thought was fantastic for someone who read the series in early highschool.

I totally agree with you. What captured my imagination, was the fact that Ayla was totally dependaant on herself. Can you imagine yourself in her place. It's not like you can go to the grocery store, or clothing store to get things. Let alone communication with the internet. I think this is why I like the series. For me it was in a different time, just like Kathren O'Neal's series, only better.

thanks for the warning I was thinking about getting it this weekend I will wait till used book sales

I haven't read the final book yet. I was so excited about it, but after hearing all the disappointing reviews I'm so sad. I will finish the series because it has been a part of my reading list for so long. I just wish it could have ended better.
