Write about your favorite books and tell us what you think about our favorite books. Be truthful and honest about each book and feel free to express your thoughts.

Here is one of my favorite.
"Harry Potter"

One of my favorite books is BREAKING DAWN!!!

message 3: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) I simply cannot pick. So I'll just list a couple for now:

Ripper - Stefan Petrucha
Inkspell - Cornelia Funke
Nicholas Nickleby - Charles Dickens
Enola Holmes Mysteries - Nancy Springer
The Scorpio Races - Maggie Stiefvater

is Inkspell in the Inkheart series cuz i hav inkheart and my mom said the movie was good so i thought id try it

message 5: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Yes; "Inkspell" is the second one. I love all three of the books, but if I have to choose a favorite, "Inkspell" is it. The movie is wonderful! Someone who has read the book first can probably appreciate it a bit better, but you ought to read it sometime. Wait until you're in the right mood for it, though; it is one of those books that you have to be in the right mood for, and if you're not, you might end up disliking it.

I liked the movie and the book a lot. I want to continue the story soon(I have only gotten to the first book) i think that they are really creative and interesting.

message 7: by Mara (last edited Apr 16, 2012 04:30PM) (new)

Mara (maraanne) It's definitely an original idea. I especially loved it when I first picked it up because I kind of always wondered myself: what would happen if you could read characters out of books into our world? And Cornelia Funke so obviously loves books and understands an author's relationship with characters; it really shows, and I can totally sympathize. Authors think that they're in charge of a story, but they're really not. But that's a different topic for another time. :) You should definitely finish the other two books, Emily, when you get a chance. Just be prepared to cry at the end of "Inkspell."

message 8: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
I don't want to cry, but i love when i book can make you feel that way. it would be mixed emotions for me if you could read people out of books. i wouldn't know whether to cry with joy or scream in terror. i guess it depends in the book. :) and the character.

message 9: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Things get better in the third installment, "Inkdeath," just to reassure you right now. I would be overjoyed if I read a favorite character out of a book, but then I would feel terrible because that character would then be missing his/her own world terribly, I imagine. As for villains . . . Provided I could control the situation if I read them out . . . Maybe I would like to meet them. :)

message 10: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
That would be so cool and you could like ask them about all the questions you had in the book. i would rather read a good character out and let them go back when i finished the book. also i wouldn't want to lose someone around me when they appeared.

message 11: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) So in other words, it would just be easier to read yourself into a book, and then read yourself back out when you're done getting your questions answered and have explored the world a bit. :)

message 12: by Mya (new)

Mya Maliyevsky (mmaliyevsky) | 4 comments Divergent and Hunger Games, were really good.

message 13: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) I haven't yet read "Divergent" (it's on hold at the library!), but naturally I've read "The Hunger Games." It was good, in my opinion, too. Writing style not the world's greatest, but story-wise it was good.

message 14: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
Not to offend anyone but i didnt really like "The Hunger Games" i thought it could have been better. i havent read "Divergent" either but it sounds really interesting.

Mara as for reading into a book, i was thinking about writing a story about something like that.

"The Hunger Games" could have, indeed, been better in many areas; I definitely agree with that.

Oohh, I hope when you have your idea more "formulated" you will share? :) I myself am going to write a short story something along the lines of someone reading himself into a book - but I assure you that you won't be stealing any ideas by writing yours, so don't worry about that if you were. My short story is going to be a psychological thriller. But perhaps we should save this for the writing topic.

My all-time favorite book when I was younger - about 12 - was "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" by Avi. I still really like it.

message 18: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
Sounds interesting you will have to me more about that book.

I will tell you more about the idea on the other discussion. It isn't anything yet but it is an idea

message 25: by Anna (new)

message 26: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
that sounds really cool what kinds of genres are you interested in.

message 27: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 32 comments I may sound quite strange and not at all like any other sixteen year old girls...I am quite old-fashioned in my loves, dislikes and likes.

message 28: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Hey, there is absolutely nothing wrong with having old-fashioned tastes. I've loved old things since I was five, and I'm not about to change. :)

"Ella Enchanted" and "Just Ella" are two of my absolute favorites, too. I love that both of them have banister sliding! "Emma" is probably my favorite out of Jane Austen's stories, though it's hard to pick a favorite. I love them all. "Northanger Abbey" is absolutely hilarious.

"The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle" is a historical novel. Charlotte Doyle takes passage on a ship from England to America, after finishing her education at a girls' school. But what Charlotte doesn't know is that the captain of the Seahawk is insane, and the crew is planning mutiny . . . After certain events, Charlotte ends up joining the crew, to set some things right. Some of circumstances are a bit impossible, but it's still a really good adventure story.

I learned a long time ago that a person will never get through their "To-Read" list. It's just not possible, because there will always be more books than time. :)

Have you ever read any Jane Austen before, Emily? She's an awesome author. People say she's boring, but she's anything but. Her sense of humor is positively wonderful - I bet she wasa fun person to hang out with. Anyway, if you've never read her before, I would start with either "Emma" or "Pride and Prejudice." "Emma" is long, but hilarious, and "Pride and Prejudice" is a bit shorter and hilarious, too. They're all hilarious, really, but some more than others. "Northanger Abbey" would be a good one to start with, too.

Miss Austen can be a bit hard to follow sometimes - you have to get into the rhythm of her writing. I would suggest maybe starting out with "Northanger Abbey" if you ever try her books again. It's her mystery story, shorter than the others, a little easier to follow.

I like books where you have to think about the meaning. My friend tried to read "Sherlock Holmes" and couldnt understand it. then i read it and i loved it. I'm going to read more of those books.

message 39: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Oh! Oh! A future Sherlockian!!! ;) Forgive my enthusiasm; I'm a Sherlockian myself (Sherlock Holmes fan, and probably one of the more fanatical ones) and I always get really excited when I meet other people who are just being introduced to his stories. Whatever you do, don't read any Sherlock Holmes stories published by the New American Library; they rewrite the stories. I remember when I was first introduced to Sherlock . . . Happy day. :)

I know i absolutely LOVE it! I mean i have watched the movies but never before thought about the books and now that i have read one i can't stop wanting to read them. he is like so amazing at what he does it is insanity. I like the way he observes things it is so inspiring

message 41: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Which movies have you watched? Did you know that Arthur Conan Doyle, the Author, actually hated Sherlock Holmes? He was jealous of his own character! And he called Watson an idiot who didn't know how to use his brain.

message 42: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
Wow he really is weird i mean Watson is a doctor how would be be and idiot. at least i am almost positive he is a doctor.

I saw new one a Game of Shadows and i think i saw the first one but i dont know the name.

message 43: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Yes, Watson is a doctor - an army surgeon. :) Conan Doyle was a strange person, and actually quite an enormous jerk.

Ah, good, so you've seen the good movies. People will tell you that the new movies are nothing like the stories; don't believe them, they've just watched too many Basil Rathbone versions (which are horrid). I'll admit that the makers took quite a few liberties with "A Game of Shadows." They were catering more to the audience than actually paying attention to the spirit of the stories. But they did Moriarty spot on, and the first movie (which is just called "Sherlock Holmes," by the way) is quite close to the story spirit.

If you ever get a chance, watch BBC's series called "Sherlock." It's the Sherlock Holmes stories set in 21st-century London, and it is amazing. The actor who plays Sherlock - Benedict Cumberbatch - is the best Holmes ever. PBS plays them on occasion, or you can find all the episodes on tv-links.eu for free.

My favorite novel is probably "The Hound of Baskerville," but I do really like "Sign of the Four" because that's when Mary Morstan is introduced, and she's totally awesome. Out of the short stories, my favorites are "The Dying Detective," "The Cardboard Box," and "The Speckled Band." I do love "The Engineer's Thumb," too, though.

message 44: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
Ok i am going to read them all as soon as possible. so far i have only read "Scandal in Bohemia" and i loved it.

I am going to look into the thoughs series. i love this i can't beleive you love him too. i am going to read all these ASAP.

message 45: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) "Scandal in Bohemia" is my second-favorite, if only because Irene Adler outsmarts him. And as much as I love Sherlock, I still get a kick out of when he's outsmarted, especially with his disparaging opinion of women.

It's hard not to like Holmes. :)

message 46: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
I know right. since it was the first book i read i was kind of disappointed when he got outsmarted. i thought he was unbeatable. but i do like how he respects or because she did.

message 47: by Mara (last edited Apr 23, 2012 09:41AM) (new)

Mara (maraanne) He is unbeatable, unless he underestimates his opponent, as he did with Irene. :) I feel like we should start a Sherlock Holmes thread.

message 48: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 32 comments Except I hated how Irene Adler did it...so that he couldn't trace anything...come on, Steven Moffat, you used to be my favorite writer on Sherlock and Doctor Who so why the change?!.

message 49: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
who is Steven Moffat? i thought the Author was Conan Doyle

message 50: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) | 32 comments Oh, I mean..Steven Moffat wrote the screenplay!! Steven Moffat is...just look him up!
