i totally agree same with movies. the ones that win a bunch of awards never are any good.

message 102: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments That's typically true, though not always. I do like some of the "popular" movies, but you're right, most of them are either depressing or stupid.

People just dont know what they are looking for. I actually havent had that much trouble with books but then again i dont look i the awards i just start reading.

message 104: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments I'll read any book as long as it sounds interesting, no matter who the author is or whatever. I've found that even if I might not like one book by an author that doesn't mean I won't like another one. I am a pretty picky reader though ;)

I'm not i will like any book i read, unless it is just plain horrible. if i find it boring or meaningless then i hate it but most of the times when i pick up a book it is a good one.

message 106: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments I won't usually finish reading a book I don't like. I am picky with the kinds of things I like but I am willing to take suggestions from friends. It just depends on the kind of book it is. There are some things I just don't really care for.

message 107: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Avi is an author I have admired for a long time because he can write in sooo many different genres successfully, and his historical novels are both well-researched and fun adventures. He can have a female and a male character together without there being any annoying romances! Yay! There are some flaws with the storyline of "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle," but it's still good. I really love his "Crispin Trilogy" (medieval) and his "Beyond the Western Sea" series (about Irish immigrants to America).

I read one of his books back in fourth grade i dont remember the name but it was about a boy that went to war. i thought it was really good.

Hazel depending on the book i am reading. if it is horrible then i will stop but i hate putting a book down and it has only happened once. other times i just push through. if it is a series and they have a bad book i wont give up the series, (usually though it has happened) they usually get batter.

message 109: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Mara, I still have to get into reading Avi (so many books to read!)

Emily, I agree if it's a series, espicially from a first-time author, you have to give them a little leeway for improval (that's not a word is it?) And sometimes I will read through a book I don't like just to say I did so I could argue with people about it properly :P

message 110: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
i did that once because you cant say a book is bad if you never even looked at it before. a friend and i had a bet once that one book was better then the other but neither of us had read both books. we made each other read the other book

message 111: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Haha that's funny ;) I remember my friend making me read stuff too, and she's quite the argumentative type, so I have to know my stuff to prove a point to her. Even then it's not usually worth it, haha ;)

message 112: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) @ Emily: Sounds like you read The Fighting Ground 25th Anniversary Edition by Avi

@ Hazel: I think the word you're searching for is "improvement," not "improval." ;) Though honestly, I like the sound of "improval"

message 113: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Haha, well this was the weekend where my mind was shot, but hey, I have always wanted to make up words like The Bard ;)

message 114: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Slightly off topic: you've seen the Horrible Histories episode where Shakespeare engages in a "word duel," right?

I always maintain that if Shakespeare could make up so many words, why can't we? ;)

message 115: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Yes! Love that one! There's a new one now that's a Shakespeare song, you'll have to see it ;)

Yes I am always making up words. I made up "gaberyaks" (it's people who talk all the time :P)

message 116: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
I cant make up words easily. I have a wild imagination but for some reason words and names dont come easy i usually come up with something original.

and Mara i dont think that was the book but maybe i have the wrong Author i mean it was a while ago that i read it.

message 117: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Well, I don't intentionally make up words, haha ;) Most of the time they are just silly typos :P

message 118: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Was it by chance Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes Which is a good book as well. Need to re-read it.

message 119: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
Nope man i wish i could remeber then it would be easier but i know i would recognise it if i heard it again. right now all i know is that it is about a boy that gets grouped into a war, either the civil war or the revolutionary war but that is all i remember.

message 120: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments "Red Badge of Courage" maybe? That's one of the next books I'm going to read. I loved Johnny Tremain, it's been a long time since I read that one too.

message 121: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Oohh, I still need to read "The Red Badge of Courage." My old paperback copy disappeared mysteriously a few years back . . . I suspect my evil cousin hid it just to be irritating.

message 122: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
probably Mara. but nope again i wouldnt worry to much about it i'm sure it will came back around in my memory. if i had been on this web site three years ago i would know :)

message 123: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Emily I have one more suggestion for you ;) Give Me Liberty by Laura Malone Elliott Don't know if that's it but I remember reading this a while ago and I thought it wasn't too bad.

message 124: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
nope the Author was Avi i am 99% sure it was him but that book looks good. :)

message 125: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Oh okay ;) Yeah, this book was pretty good from what I remember about it.

message 126: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
Oh my Gosh guys i am really sorry Mara you were right the first time. "The Fighting Ground" was right i forgot more then i thought. sorry

message 127: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Haha well at least you found it ;) I have seen that book and wanted to read it too, I'll have to add it to my list.

from what i can remember it is good but i can't remember much so i dont know if you could trust me. :)

message 129: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Haha, well I'm sure it's good, but it will probably be a while before I get around to reading it.

message 130: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) "The Fighting Ground" is good. It's one of Avi's much shorter books because it's intended for a younger audience, but I still remember liking it. "Give Me Liberty" is also really good.

message 131: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments I haven't been into the Rev War stuff for a while since that was practically all I was reading for a long time. I was going to write a book, but it wasn't speaking to me :P So I had done all that research and never wrote the book haha. But I do like the time period ;)

i have not been into Historical fiction for long. usually i thought i wouldnt like it but once i started reading it for school i realized that it really was good.

message 133: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments I kind of fell in love with HF when I read the American Girl series when I was about eight or so, which was when I started loving history in school too. My favorite series were the "Felicity" books and that's why I have always loved the American Revolution. Have you read any of Anne Rinaldi's books? They are really good too. Some of my favorites are "Time Enough for Drums" (a Rev War novel) and "Girl in Blue" which is a Civil War novel.

message 134: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Other than fairy tales, historical fiction was about all I was allowed to read when I was little, so I learned to love it. It's hard to find good Revolutionary War books anymore, though. Chains (Seeds of America, #1) by Laurie Halse Anderson was amazingly good.

message 135: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments I definitely want to read that one! When I feel like reading another Rev War novel, I'll definitely look that one up.

message 136: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) I need to read its sequel: Forge (Seeds of America, #2) by Laurie Halse Anderson

message 137: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Oh there's a sequel to it? I didn't know that.

message 138: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Yep! It follows the boy character's story. I think she's writing - or has written - a third one, too. This is a set of books that could have quite a few sequels and all of them be good.

message 139: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments There is so much you can do with this time period. The war itself can generate several long novels. I know because I was planning on writing one eventually and I know it's going to be really long if I want to add in all the people I want to ;)

message 140: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) I still want to try rewriting an old Revolution-based story. I called it "The Fight for Freedom" and a girl joins the militia disguised as a boy, and acts as a spy for them. She's trying to find her older brother. It's a good idea; I just need to rework it.

message 141: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments That sounds cool. I have another story that I'm going to put up once I re-work it. It's about a girl who finds a wounded spy. It could have been a lot longer than it was but it was one I wrote for a contest and they always have stupid word limits ;)

message 142: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) You could always make it longer and publish it.

message 143: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Well, I had actually planned to extend it, because I have had requests to do so ;) The part I have is good in itself, it's just the story could definitely continue and I have a few ideas of how it could go. I'll post what I have within the next few days and eventually I might write more for it.

message 144: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
both those ideas sound really cool and you could go a lot of ways with them.

message 145: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) I look forward to reading it!

message 146: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Well I found my spy story and I edited it so I might get it up later. It's not great, but it's not horrible either ;)

message 147: by Emily :) (new)

Emily :) | 313 comments Mod
i dont care i wont to read it either way. i love the way you guys right all your stories are super interesting and i love reading them.

message 148: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Haha, well thank ye ;) You do realize I only put the ones up that I am still fond of though. Not all my stories are very great :P

message 149: by Mara (new)

Mara (maraanne) Every writer has some "embarrassing" writings. I have two at least (I don't count the one I wrote when I was seven). One I wrote when I was 12; it's 50 pages and just weird. And extremely bloody. And very badly written. I'm rather disturbed at how casually I wrote deaths at that age. ;) And then the other one is actually a series of books. Considering when I wrote them, they are not all that bad and I hope to revive them in some form eventually. But my characters had some pretty bad mood swings. ;)

message 150: by Hazel (new)

Hazel West | 439 comments Haha, I wrote some really bloody things at that age too. I was totally into decapitating and dismemberment. Rather scary. Now I still have lots of gore, but it's not like that anymore ;P
