Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Greetings to all readers!

It's time for another reading competition here in RRRC, and we are excited to unveil our official 3rd RRRC Reading Tournament.

In keeping with the tradition of the first tournament, this one is loosely inspired by another Children's Game, Follow The Leader.

So, pay attention, for here are the directions:

1. First, pick a favorite book. You can pick up to three books (TIP:Choose books from different genres). The chosen book/s will be the leader of your track. You can create up to three tracks only.

2. Once you have selected your book, go to its GR's book page. On the right hand side, just below the list of genres, you will see a list of books "That Readers Also Enjoyed."

3. Select a book from "That Readers Also Enjoyed" list and that will be your first read for the Tournament.

4. When finished, go to the new book's GR page, and select your next book from the new book's "That Readers Also Enjoyed" list. (edited)

5. Continue this process, until the Tournament's end date.

RULES:

- Each book read for this Tournament is worth 2 points, regardless of length. Audiobooks and rereads are counted.

-You can start with only one leader book or you can start with all three leader books at the same time. You cannot have more than three. If one of your tracks stalled (ex. you can't find any books you like, have no way to get the books, etc). Then you may close a track, and pick a new leader book, and start a new track.

However, every time you close a track and start a new one, that will be a deduction of 5 points, so think carefully before doing so.

- Unlike regular challenges in our group, we will be editing our posts instead of reposting. The Tournament Master/s will be giving you further instructions on the matter.

-You need to post a start date and end date with each book read and there should be no overlapping. Books read can be used in other challenges outside of this tournament but not for more than one track.

The Tournament will officially start on April 15th and will run up to September 15th, 2012. As soon as the official sign-up thread goes live, you may post your leader book/s and the first book you are going to read for the challenge. When done, you can post your next book, and so on...

So, gird up your loins, hook on those reading googles, and get ready to read.

(Our official Tournament Masters are Fran and Jane(PS)).

Here is the LINK for more RULES AND CLARIFICATIONS from our Tournament Masters.

Hina (hinaj) | 2581 comments Yay!! I can't wait. This sounds fun, a little more complicated than the last one!

Sassafrass (sass-a-frass) | 4192 comments Wow, this sounds fun! I have a question. When you say you can use different genres are can they be different types of Romances? (contemporary, historical, erotic) or do they have to totally different genres like Romance, Sci-Fi, and Mystery?

message 5: by Hina (new)

Hina (hinaj) | 2581 comments Well I thought Yz meant contemporary, historical, paranormal etc. But now I wonder too...

I'm hoping it's romance, Hina, but I want to be sure before I decide I want to join.

Me too, I already have my three different romance lined up.

message 8: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ | 3901 comments I understand the rules but let me ask a question. If the book shown in "Readers also enjoyed" is book #14 of a series and you are only up to #5, can you read #5 instead of #14?

For example: I chose Crucible of Gold (Temeraire, #7) by Naomi Novik and one of the Also Enjoyed books is Cold Days (The Dresden Files, #14) by Jim Butcher which is #14 in the series and isn't even published yet. So could I read Death Masks (The Dresden Files, #5) by Jim Butcher #5 instead?

message 9: by Fran, Moderator (last edited Apr 14, 2012 06:28PM) (new)

Fran | 12278 comments We are currently looking into the very good question Barbara has raised....hopefully we will have an answer very soon :)

@Sass, I think Yz was just giving a suggestion as to choosing different genres. It just makes the tracks you choose different and less likely to overlap. Just trying to give you more choice. You are free to choose any 3 books you want as your starting point- no restrictions at all.

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 957 comments So, how many books do we read for this? Also, do we pick another book once we've read all the books from there? I'm confused...

the number of books is unlimited until the end of the challenge.

and as far as picking books: when you pick your first book from the "readers also enjoyed" section--Say it's Book x, then you will pick your next book (book y) from book x's "readers also enjoyed" section, then you keep choosing like that. When you run out of books to read from picking that way or when you can't find any that you want to read, then you go to the next track.

does that make sense?

message 16: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 972 comments I wonder, if we open all three tracks at once, can we choose next book from any track or do we have to follow only one track at time?

message 17: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments sassy has it...for a more visual example

i could start off with these three favorite books:
track 1 - Daughter of Smoke and Bone
track 2 - Some Girls Bite
track 3 - The Curtis Reincarnation

i can have up to 3 books (1 from each track going at once)
so from my track 1 book, i could read Angelfall which shows up in the readers also enjoyed...once i finish it, then i would use Angelfall and pick my next book...does that make sense?

ɑƨħŵɑɡ ♥Team Magnus Damora FOREVER♥ (unheard) | 162 comments It's complicated but I love it.. I'm def. in :)

wondering the same thing..

message 19: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments you can read all tracks at the same time...just no more than 3 books (1 book from each track) at a time

message 20: by Rishika (new)

Rishika | 136 comments is it ok if i read shadowland?

message 21: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i'm not sure i understand your question rishika - are you going to use it as one of your track books, or you want to read it? if you want to read it, then you need to find a book that has it listed as a readers also enjoyed book - does that make sense?

message 22: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 972 comments Thanks Dee, I think I got it now. Looks interesting, i'm in! Have to find my books now.

KarenF (cleocleveland) | 1099 comments I have what's probably a silly question. And I'm not even sure I can ask it properly. :)

Can I read books in between tournament books? Obviously they wouldn't earn me any points but if I have a library book that I need to return and it doesn't fit any track do I have to end the track? Or can I read that book and then get back to the tournament?

Thanks!

message 26: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments yeah - you can read other stuff that doesn't count (I know i do it all the time!)

Yes it does. I thought we just had to use one book and just keep using it as a reference til we read all the books on the side.

message 28: by KarenF (new)

KarenF (cleocleveland) | 1099 comments Perfect. Thanks Dee!

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 957 comments Looking at the calendar, this tournament starts today.

message 30: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 649 comments Do we have to read the beginning book from each track - or is that simply our starting point?
I'm in - and will open all three tracks at once, since I usually read three books at a time (one for audiobooks, one for e-books, one for "real" books).
Do we keep our own tally of points?

message 31: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments The beginning book should be a book you already read. Your first book to read for this Tournament will be the book you choose from the 'That Others Also Enjoyed' list on the right of your starting books home page.

You can keep your tally of points on your first post on the sign-up thread (which will hopefully go up very soon!) Please edit your original post to reflect your progress, no reposting. Jane and I will also keep total scores for each participant.

message 32: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Hi Everyone!!

Please post all questions, concerns, ideas and chit-chat in this thread. Let's try and keep the official thread where we sign up just for keeping track of our titles read and points accumulated.

We hope you all enjoy this tournament- let's have some fun with Follow The Leader!!

message 33: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments So the question now is: The three books I selected initially - can they be any book I read anytime or a book I read recently or a book that I haven't read yet?

message 34: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Your books that will start you off are books that you have read. Doesn't matter when you read them. You will using those titles to choose the first books to read. Those starter books are just used so you can select your first reading title from the 'readers also enjoyed' list on the starter books' home page.

This is the answer to Barbara's question when it comes to books that are part of a series:

Any series that comes up in the list can be counted for the challenge. Reading the exact book in the list will get the participant the full 2 points. Reading any book in the series with get 1 point.

message 36: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments Another question: Are re-reads allowed?

message 37: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments Vi wrote: "Another question: Are re-reads allowed?"

Yes. As long as you reread the entire book, and not just a portion.

message 38: by Jane (PS), Moderator (last edited May 02, 2012 05:37PM) (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I'm just going to reserve this post for a list of rules to clarify issues discussed above or in the future :)

RULES/CLARIFICATIONS:

- Each book read for this Tournament is worth 2 points, regardless of length or genre. Audiobooks and rereads are counted.

You may reread your original 'starting' book if so wished when chosen from a book list down the track. This will count 2 points toward your total - but no skimming.

- If a book in a series comes up in the list which you have already read or is more advanced, you may read a different book from that series however you may only count 1 point toward your total. That is, reading the exact book in the list will get the participant the full 2 points. Reading any book in a series from the list will get 1 point.

In the case where a book from a series is chosen which is not the exact list book, use this book's 'Readers Also Enjoyed' ('RAE') for your next choice. (That is, use the book your actually read to generate your next choice.)

- For those of you that have pre-populated your lists, please double-check that the book you are about to read is still on the 'RAE' list.

We haven't styled a challenge around this 'device' so we need to ensure that it continues to 'hold' those books throughout the tournament :)

- You can start with only one leader book or you can start with all three leader books at the same time. You cannot have more than three. If one of your tracks stalled (ex. you can't find any books you like, have no way to get the books, etc). Then you may close a track, and pick a new leader book, and start a new track.

However, every time you close a track and start a new one, that will be a deduction of 10 5 points, so think carefully before doing so.

- The suggestion to select three different genres (romance or otherwise) is just a suggestion. You may create three tracks in the same genre if you like.

- Unlike regular challenges in our group, we will be editing our posts instead of reposting. The Tournament Master/s will be giving you further instructions on the matter.

Please post all comments and book/progress updates in this thread. Maintain your original post in the other thread for your actual tournament list.

- You need to post a start date and end date with each book read and there should be no overlapping. Books read can be used in other challenges outside of this tournament but not for more than one track.

Just to complicate...
If I read an alternate book from a series where does my next book come from? Do I look at the list of "Readers also enjoyed..." attached to the series number I SHOULD have read, or the one I actually read (these lists may vary)?

message 40: by Nicola (new)

Good question. I'm going to say the book that you actually read.

message 42: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I'll play. I probably won't do very well but I'll see what I come up with. I don't like not being able to overlap reads.

Let me get this straight though: It says in one post that we can read from all 3 tracks just no more than 1 book from each track at once. But then it says no-overlapping in another post. But that's just no overlapping in a single track right? I am a reader who reads multiple books at once. I usually have a print, a Kindle and an audiobook going. I will just make them from different tracks. But it would suck for me to not be able to read from all 3 tracks at once.

message 43: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments yes, no overlapping on a single track...so you can be reading a book for tracks 1, 2, 3 simutaneously, but you can't be doing say tracks 1, 1 and 2...or something like that

Wan (wanwaddell) | 2081 comments I'm in. I think I understand the rules.

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 957 comments I've got another question. I read a lot of young adult books so as long as the books are different genres of like realistic fiction, dystopian, or whatever, does that count for this?

message 46: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments the 3 different genres is just a tip...to make sure you get the broadest options back on the RAE...

the wider the variety in your 3 original choices, the more choices you may end up with on the RAE

message 47: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Hi Amy,

You don't have to choose different genres. That was just a suggestion in case you don't want a lot of the same type of books popping up for all three tracks. You can choose any titles you want, any genre- no restrtictions on titles at all.

message 48: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Thanks for the clarification which confirmed what I thought.
