I held off for the same reason. I haven't read book one, so starting in book two might not be a fair review of the book due to the missing information from book one.
But I will give it a try too.

Hi Sheri.I actually wrote The Dark Age first though The Great Collapse was published first. I'd say TDA can stand on its own just fine.
