There were other books following A Child Called it. I was a child welfare worker, and found his abuse one of the worst I have ever read. It amazed me that he was able to come out of it as well as he did.

Just finished "Evidence Not Seen," It is a Hiding Place type book but in a Japanese concentration camp. Wonderful story. Highly recommended!

MaryJo Dawson I have been hearing a great deal of positive comments on a book called Unbroken, which is about a man who survived a sinking of his vessel while serving in the Pacific during WWII, days in a life raft, and finally, a horrible internment in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. however, his final freedom came from deliverance from hatred....
I plan to read it myself, but those who recommend it make me feel comfortable to mention this book already.

Eric Andrews-Katz If you are looking for TRUE Holocaust memoirs try:

The Upstairs Room by Johanna Reiss
THE LOST by Daniel Mendelshon
NIGHT by Elie Wiesel
PLAYING FOR TIME by Fania Fenelon

I'm not sure I'm brave enough to read all of those.... reading just one book over a period of time by someone who lived through those horrific experiences is a huge emotional trip.
at present I am reading The Long Walk, which is on the fringe of WWII history, but vividly covers the appalling experiences of a young Polish officer who commits no crime other than to be just that in 1939, and to be born on the Russian/Polish border.

Howdy,
I understand. I have a bit of an obsession/compulsion on the subject and have read extensively about it.
To review them briefly for your (understood) sensitivity:

The Upstairs Room ... is equal to Anne Frank's Diary on level of described horror. It's a true story about Dutch Sisters hidden in a closet.

The Lost ... I wept and wept at this book. Parts of it can be a little slow, but the horrors described and the style of writing make it so vivid that I wept aloud and am not ashamed of saying so. (I was so impressed by this book, that I managed to find a 1st edition signed copy and bought it)

Night ... most high school's use this as must read material. Elie Wiesel's autobiography (short about 115 pages) written from 15 year old's perspective about living through Auschwitz and eventually Dachua. This is actually part of a trilogy including : Dawn, Night, and Dusk telling his story of before, during and after Auschwitz
His two later full autobiographies are both very good reading as well

Playing for Time ... true account of Parisian cabaret half Jewish singer in Auschwitz and her experience with the all girl's orchestra. She was given some (very few) advantages because of her position in the orchestra, and the book is from her diary. A made-for-tv movie was made in the late 80's (?) starring Venessa Redgrave

For a different experience, look into the graphic comics MAUS by Art Spiegelman. It's the allegory of Jews being mice and Nazis being Cats and its meant to teach those kids of age between the years of too much information and not enough. They are incredibly great graphic novels.

Hope this helps and isn't too much of an overload.

Eric

Katherine If you are looking for a christian testimony type book, Same Kind of Different As Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore is very good.

Jewel You can google missionary stories and tons will pop up.

Linda If you are looking for a book that is a testament to survival, I suggest The Girl with the White Flag by Tomiko Higa. She was only 7 when she was left orphaned & had to make it on her own during the Battle of Okinawa. There is no gratuitous nudity, but this is her autobiography & she does describe what she & others endured. A very powerful little book!

Does The Lost go by any other title? I can't seem to find it when I do a search online. And I only get two book results when searching for that authors name.

Anna Holocaust survivor books I recommend:

Anne Frank Remembered by Miep Gies (This is told from the point of view of the woman who hid the families in the attic)

Elli by Livia Bitton-Jackson

Survivor by Sam Pivnik

A Lucky Child by Thomas Buergenthal

Angel Parrish I would also recommend God's Smuggler and The Cross and the Switchblade--they have been recommended here several times.

I also would recommend A Chance to Die: The Life and Legacy of Amy Carmichael by Elisabeth Elliot. It is honestly my very favorite Christian biography!

The Lost: A Search for six among six million is the full title of it. You should be able to find it on Amazon.

Alice Kingsbury I have another book you might like. The Book of the Just, by Eric Silver, has great true stories about holocaust survivors and the people who helped them-very inspiring.

Jennifer Wow, what a great number of responses!

Through Gates of Splendor by Elizabeth Elliot is another amazing true story of God at work.

MaryJo Dawson Just released is The Hardest Peace, by Kara Tibbets, her true story of battling cancer as a young woman of 36. She is the wife of a pastor and has four children. It looks like a very worth while read.
