Colleen I'm trying to approve this title for a student, but I don't have a copy in hand. Can anyone give me a lexile approximation for it? I can't find one online.

message 2: by Bob (new) - rated it 5 stars

Bob 5th or 6th grade. Hope this helps.

Mark Weaver Great book, strong language at times. A very good read for anyone who likes military books. Cant wait to see the movie.

Andy I agree with Bob.

Blasphemy? Against whom - Jesus or Allah?

It's a visceral, personal survival story told by someone with an extreme will to live at all costs, and by someone who swears like I imagine all soldiers do. Unless you consider swearing to be blasphemy, I sure don't recall any blasphemy in it. But even if there is, so what? That's part of the human condition and doesn't detract from the Truth of the story at all.

James Osborne Original question mentioned a review for 4th and 5th graders. My response was with that in mind. Yes GD is blasphemous IMO and not suitable for that age group.

James Osborne We can disagree on whether certain words are a form of blasphemy or not and while the lexile approx. may be 5th or 6th grade, I believe we can agree that the language content is not suitable for that age group. That was my point.

I understand now. I haven't heard swearing equated to blasphemy for a really long time, so I wasn't sure if that's what you were referring to or not. But yeah, I completely agree with you that the language is probably inappropriate for most kids that age.

While the book is rather easy to read (it is also a page turner), the content and how it is expressed is mature in nature.
