I never liked the book before the ending, but when I finished it, I thought it was stupid. I honestly ask: What do people see in the book? I just don't see anything special or even GOOD about it!

Yes! The Giver is an excellent book. While it is technically a children's book, I do think that adults would understand this book more and get something out of it.
I found this book to be one of the few that I could not put down. I think I read it in one-two days.
Lowry's other books - Gathering Blue and Messenger - are sequels of this and are just as good.

Yes it is a very short book but if your looking for a funny book stay far away this book is dark depressing and just plain sad but I really enjoyed it!

I read it out loud to my son when he was younger and we had great discussions. I think this is more of a Utopian book than Dystopian; not that Utopian literature portrays a great society.
The first time I read it I was almost 30 and read it in a children's lit course at University and loved it.
Im 30 and I had never read it until about a year ago when a teacher friend of mine gave me a copy and demanded I read it. I really enjoyed it. Makes you think about your own humanity and where we as a community might be headed. I would recommend it. Makes you think.
I'm 41 and just read this 2 weeks ago. My son received this book at his 5th grade book exchange at the class Christmas party. His teacher (wisely) told me to read it first as he recognized that the subject matter would be more personal for my son and me. My son would have been "released" had he been a member of the community in the book. I think if you are a person with any sort of disability or related to someone disabled, this book is somewhat haunting.
I read this because my high school age niece mentioned it had been on their reading list and it was great. I was SOOOOOO disappointed. I like this genre, but the end was just TOOOO depressing, at least the book was fairly short.
I personally didn't enjoy the book but I also read it in my 7th grade year and who really likes reading books in class at that age? It has the nice contrast between utopia's and distopia's which is awesome for discussion. I think I would enjoy it now that I understand the context.
This is one of the first books I had to read in school that I actually sat down and read. It is definitely is worth a read. Years later in it's still in my top 20 favorite books.
This is definitely worth reading, but keep in mind that it was written for children. The ending was left open for the sequel.
Absolutely. I read it for the first time when I was in sixth grade, but my parents read it right after me and both loved it, as did my older brother. It's great for everything!

No. Not really worth the read. It was depressing. I read it when I was 12 and was reading it for school so I had to finish it.
I think it is a wonderful book about challenging the way things are. Just because they're tradition, doesn't make it right.. in the book.. it's like the boy learns how to live.

I do recommend reading The Giver. Reading about a society that is so extreme is always interesting and I think it does call attention to the human spirit and how any one person, no matter what age, can question and consider what his or her living circumstances may be.
I read it when I was younger & it didn't really stand out to me until I got to the middle of the book. It's definitely an interesting & different piece of literature. Give it a shot!
One word: THISBOOKWASSOAMAZINGYOUREALLYHAVETOREADIT!IT'SAEWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, maybe 13 words... still, it was one of the best books I've ever read. DEFINITELY worth the read. Enjoy!

Happy reading!"
I enjoyed the book too, except for the ending.. wish that could have been different.

This is a really great book. As a teacher, I use this book to teach the kids acceptance and tolerance of others. In the book, everyone is virtually the same and have limited choices. I think it is a must read.
I read it when I was in Middle School and I really did not care for it much. I had no idea what was going on in the book. Maybe that is what turned me off.
I've heard everybody is saying 'yes'! I agree, please do read it... Yeah, it's common for people to say that it's a 'kid book' because of how short it is, but the content and diction is amazing, it gives you great visuals. Unlike Hunger Games or Twilight, the sentence structure is fenominal as well as the choice of words. It's a great read!
I would deffiently read this book! Just to let you this book is a quartet series first The Giver then Gathering Blue then messenger and the fourth book is coming out soon it is called Son!!!
I'm 29 and I read it a few years ago...b/c I felt like I should. I would say don't bother, unless you just want a quick read just to say you've done it. I didn't find it to be anything special, compared to all of the other Dystopian YA books.
Wow, i didn't even know there was a secend book! Library i go.. But It is a really good book. I want you too tell us what you think!! And i agree, it was really confusing towards the beginning.
I think it's worth the read. It made an impression on me when I was a kid, so much so that I found it not too long ago, buried in a box; I read it again and then read the two sequels right away.
I consider it a classic - and a ~good~ classic. Definitely worth a read.
