David (daviz) | 65 comments Fantastic! Congratulations! There must be lots of more people out there willing to talk about the books they like. Perhaps during the course of this year we will get closer to 100 members!

I just realized our group has passed its first year anniversary! Star Trek Reads was started April 9th, 2012.

Happy Birthday everyone! :-)

message 54: by Dan (new)

Dan (kertrats) | 40 comments Right on! I'm bad at remembering things like that, too. My Trek Lit website is a little over two years old, and I missed the anniversary this year as well!

Congrats to Star Trek Reads!

Brandon (nodnarb518) | 1 comments Hey guys, Brandon here. Love the original Trek series and recently started watching all of DS9 on Netflix. Looking to get a few good recommendations and have some interesting discussions.

Daniela | 1 comments Hi everybody!
I'm Daniela, I love all Star Trek series but my favourite is TNG. I'm a huge fan of David Mack, loved the Cold Equation series and Destiny. I aliso liked some TOS books a lot, like IDIC. Looking forward to know you all!

David (daviz) | 65 comments Hi & welcome, Brandon & Daniela, it's always good to see new people here! :-))

Sorry Brandon that it's taken a month to welcome you, I don't know what happened before, sorry. Anyway we all hope you will continue to enjoy watching DS9 on Netflix! DS9 is an awesome series! If you can we would love to hear about your impressions on the series, I'm pretty sure I speak for everyone on that!

Nice to know of someone who likes TOS, Daniela! My wife would rather watch TOS than any of the other series. As for myself I LOVE them all!

Lee | 35 comments oops, I just noticed the "intros" part of this header.

As I said elsewhere, I've been reading Trek a long time, starting with the Original Series. I got away from it for a while, mostly about the same time as the Next Generation, so I have read almost nothing from that era or later (watched, not read).

I'm also a wargamer, and Star Fleet Battles and its relatives have been among my favorites for a long time, so I never got completely away from Trek.

Right now, I am letting the Vanguard series pull me back into the stream.

message 64: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (amelianichole) Hi there, I was born in the same year that TNG first aired and my parents both grew up watching TOS. I probably read my first Star Trek book in 2002. I can still remember my excitement at finding science fiction books to read. Up until that point I had only read Nancy Drew and Dick King-Smith.

Now my book shelf is 50% Star Trek. :) I prefer to read TOS, with a bit of TNG (mostly by Peter David). My favorite TOS books are The Lost Years, Prime Directive, Uhura's Song, and Doctor's Orders.

message 65: by David (new)

David (daviz) | 65 comments Welcome to Star Trek! Hope you are continuing to read the novels. It's been a while since I last read any. I didn't have any further books form my ST wish list on BookMooch so I cancelled my account and now I'm no longer a member. I haven't found any new books in our library and the book shops and charity shops don't seem to have any either. I can't afford to pay for books on Amazon. I've been reading other SF books since then though I miss the ST books.

Except for Uhura's Song, our favorites are the same. I would add The Federation.

Bill | 16 comments Hello everybody, I'm Bill. I've been around for a while using Goodreads as a library card / reminder of what I've read, even posted some reviews, notes & comments about the books I’ve read.
I became interested in Star Trek in the early 1980s & saw Star Trek III, before any other Star Trek film. I walked out of it wondering "does anyone publish Star Trek novels?” I didn't know what I was in for!
I recall reading only 2 books I was assigned as school work, because I was reading Star Trek novels all the time, those were Johnny Tremain & The Hobbit, or There and Back Again I read Star Trek almost exclusively until I discovered The Hunt for Red October & Tom Clancy's works in 1989.
From then on I branched out, giving most of my Star Trek novels to the local library, thereby making room for other genres. Ereaders & ebooks have made it so much easier to read, I really appreciate them. That is something they couldn’t see Star Trek influencing in September 1966, I bet.
Hoping I can contribute something here in the discussions…

Lizzie | 81 comments Hi Bill. I started out using Goodreads for the same purpose, to keep track of what I had read. Eventually, I ended up joining groups and posting in threads.

Brandon Harbeke | 33 comments Hello, Bill! Have you read My Enemy, My Ally by Diane Duane? It has some of the same strengths as The Hunt for Red October.

Bill | 16 comments Brandon wrote: "Hello, Bill! Have you read My Enemy, My Ally by Diane Duane? It has some of the same strengths as The Hunt for Red October."

Yes, I have, at least once! I might return to it & the entire Rihannsu: The Bloodwing Voyages after I finish Dune. I've read the Vatta's War & Vatta's Peace novels, which are similar, too.
Always wanted to read Dune, but until I heard there was going to be a new film version coming December 2020, I hadn't sat down & read it. This is a very interesting book, but I can't see myself continuing the series just yet.

message 71: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Hi everyone, I’m Pamela. Like many of you, I’ve been a ST fan for most of my life. I recall reading a handful of ST novels when I was in high school, but never really made a dedicated effort to do so until now. I’m a little overwhelmed at how many there are, so my reading will be random - just based on what I get my hands on at the time.

Eddie | 23 comments Hi Pamela. Shout out to my personal fav:Prime Directive

message 73: by Bill (new)

Bill | 16 comments Hello Pamela & welcome! Hope your find some Star Trek books you like. I see over in the Current Reads discussion, you started Child of Two Worlds, sounds like a good read.

Spock's World may be to your liking, if you like Mr. Spock. However do not listen to the audio book version first, it only contains the A story, the B story isn't presented in audio book form. Also try Greg Cox's Eugenic's trilogy, 3 novels about Khan & his time before meeting the Enterprise.
May you read many books at the expense of more important matters!

message 74: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Harbeke | 33 comments Welcome! If you do the ebooks, there is always a sale each month where 5-10 titles are going for $0.99 or $1.99. August has some great ones on its list, so be sure to check that out.

Welcome Pamela!

If you're interested in some of the new-ish novels, I always recommend folks start with the Destiny trilogy by David Mack. It sort of brings TNG, DS9, and VOY together and serves as a launching point for the books for the last decade.

But there are tons of great ones, so I don't think there's really any wrong place to jump back in :)

Lizzie | 81 comments I found a lot of the Star Trek novels in the "used" sections of book stores, both brick & mortar and internet.

Bill | 16 comments Lizzie wrote: "I found a lot of the Star Trek novels in the "used" sections of book stores, both brick & mortar and internet."

That's true Lizzie, you just need to have the time to search through the Science Fiction / Fantasy section or whatever genre you are looking for. This is especially true with the used books store in my area. It's a multistory building with shelves, tables & hand written genre signs.

Also a neighbor recently started a community library, in a 6 x 10 storage shed. I keep meaning to stop in & see what they have. Maybe I'll give them a few of my books, too.

We have some of those Little Libraries around. My daughter and 4 year old granddaughter put one in at their house. They don't usually have any sci fi, but occasionally I switch out a legal suspense type at those. Livingstons used to have 2 stores in Tucson but they are down to one. Most of the used book stores will put all the Star Trek or other TV series books at the end of the genre section.

Yes, Star Trek: Destiny, portions are a bit of a slog, however I kept reading because it was an interesting story line. Well worth it! Also if interested in Klingons, The Left Hand of Destiny: Book One & The Left Hand of Destiny, Book Two, are good novels to read.
