Funny :D Which book did you accidentally stole from the library???

Here's few of mine.

I sleep with a book beside me/under my pillow.
Love to reading during rainy days !
I read chick lit to take a break from reading serious novels.

TV was my hobby before I turned to books.
I research a book before deciding to buy it.

I used to do similar thing when my boys were little, otherwise, it's very difficult to find time to read with housework and all.

message 9: by Sujeetha (new)

Sujeetha (sujee) | 11 comments OK. I am new to this group but here goes:
1) I love smelling new books when I am getting the physical paper book. (But which has become rare as I purchased an e-reader recently)

2) I will go insane if I do not read fiction for a time period of more than a month. I realised this in 2009/2010 when I moved to Thailand for higher studies and found no English books.

3)If I do not read for, say, a month, I feel I am losing touch with English vocabulary. I constantly read just to stay in touch.

4) I read all sorts of classical 'whodunnits'. From Agatha Christie to D. L. Sayers, to Rex Stout, all classical authors are my regular accompaniers.

5) I have only recently started diverging out of my normal 'comfort zone' of crime and mystery fiction.

6)There are some authors of whose fictional works I have read all the books: Agatha Christie, Alistair Maclean, Jeffrey Archer, Desmond Bagley. My aim is to finish D. L. Sayers and P. D. James as well.

7) I DON'T think Pride and Prejudice is as impressive as it is made out to be. I prefer "The Mill on the Floss".

8) I have not read a single contemporary romance or chick-lit book. I don't consider it as an achievement or something to be proud of but I do feel I am one of the few left like who could say this.

9) I love murders in books. I love espionage, crimes and stuff like that.

10)I think three British authors are the best things that happened to me in my entire life: Agatha Christie, Jeffrey Archer, and John Le Carre.

message 10: by Nilu (new)

Nilu | 17 comments Have you tried any US Crime/Thriller writers like Jeffery Deaver, Michael Crichton and James Rollins ??
I like P D James and Jefferey Archer. I am ashamed to say that I've not tried Agatha Christie YET !!! (please don't shoot :D) Nice to have a Mystery/Crime/thriller reader on board.

message 11: by Sumudu (new)

Sumudu (sumudujanadari) | 7 comments 1. I always carry a book in my bag.
2. I read chick-lit to de-stress.
3. I really LOVE the smell of books.
4. I buy all the books that I love to read.
5. Genre I like to read (these days) is Historical Fictions.
6. I don't like e-books and audio books.
7. I also hate spoilers.
8. I finish all the books I start reading.
9. If there is a movie based on a book, I always try to read the book first before the movie.
10. And I can't choose a favorite book and a favorite genre.

message 12: by Sujeetha (new)

Sujeetha (sujee) | 11 comments @Nilu: I have read Michael Crichton, I like him for the simple reason that the themes are varied. Will try Jeffrey Deaver and James Rollins soon. I have also sampled a little bit of the Scandinavian crime scene. (Larsson, the guy who wrote The Snowman etc)They are becoming pretty widely read as well. I have moved onto pan-Indian authors and Russian Lit, of late.

Nice to be on board. Variety is the essence of life, right?

message 13: by Nilu (new)

Nilu | 17 comments @ Sujeetha -Too bad Stieg Larsson died , even before his books were published. Totally enjoyed the 'Millenium Trilogy'.
Jo Nesbo sounds intriguing too. Currently trying to sample the writings of Ted Dekker (The Bride Collector) What I don't have enough of ,is TIME :(
Agree 100% about variety being the essence of life :)

Halik (whacko) | 2 comments OK there are only girls on this thread so far! anyway, let me change that

1) I switched to e-books as soon as i got my kindle more than a year ago
2) real books do retain a certain nostalgic appeal however!
3) sometimes i will read a book when sitting with family or friends, and appear spaced out when they suddenly ask me a question
4) i originally joined goodreads to keep a track of the books i read
5)I'm a big sci fi/fantasy fan
6) I think the LOTR movies were (don't kill me) slightly better than the book
7) I read graphic novels if they are complex enough
8) when i was younger i'd never read a book i couldn't own, but i've gotten rid of this bad habit since
9) i used to read novels tucked inside text books so that my parents would think i was studying
10) Lately i've been trying to read more non fiction.

Cheers!

You should meet my sister (may be you will:) I don't think P & P is over-reated or anything, looking at it from a literary angle, it's one of her best! The irony, parody, free-indirect speech...

But as for my personal favourite, it has always been and will be Persuasion. I can recite Captain Wentworth's letter to Anne ( as disturbingly it might sound ) Ok, here you go I can't help it!

"I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever... The best of romantic literature!

message 18: by Sujeetha (new)

Sujeetha (sujee) | 11 comments Amalie :) Haven't read Persuasion as yet. I am planning to finish my higher studies, and if I do so on time, and take up reading the "Classics". I shall remember both of them.

I also recommend this to you then http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/98... :)

Actually I kind a agree with Sujeetha, Pride and Prejudice, is not famous for the correct reasons. you are looking at it from an educator's angle but people read it as a romance. I just don't even know how Jane Austen's books can be called romance! But Persuasion is/may be the only romance of hers, right?

message 21: by Amalie (new)

Amalie | 51 comments Mod
@ message 18 and 20: Thanks, I'll be sure check it out!

And, no, Jane Austen is not a romantic novelist, in fact she the opposite. Elizabeth only realizes that she loves Mr. Darcy after seeing Pemberly! :) Most don't get it. Miss Austen is more practical than romantic. Persuasion may be the only one we can call romantic among her work.

message 22: by Sujeetha (new)

Sujeetha (sujee) | 11 comments @Shanez and @Amalie : Haven't still gotten to reading Jane Austen's other works. Some day, when I finish my higher studies maybe. But yes, I do agree with the fact that Lizzy only agreed to Darcy after seeing Pemberley.

message 30: by Dulshani (new)

Dulshani | 3 comments Hi Kripa and everyone else:)! Time I posted about myself...

1.I used to be an ace reader while a kid, and though I don't read as much now, I still love books.

2.I love fantasy(Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire), thrillers(Jeffery Archer, Sidney Sheldon, Agatha Christie, Sherlock Holmes), historical fiction and since recently, realistic work(Paulo Coelho for his magical realism). I read Sinhala novels too. And some Sinhala Translations are super fabulous(I found the Sinhala translation of the Little House series a better read than the original!)

3.I think Twilight is overrated. I won't say its awful, but its definitely overrated. (And I, ahemm , tried Fifty Shades of Grey out of curiosity but got tired of the heroine after the first chapter and gave it up.)

4.I have a bad habit of peeking at the end, especially if the book gets boring..

5.I read in the bus.(Its specially effective to reading textbooks btw, plus diverts perverts lol)

6.I do read e-books, but it never comes to the standard of real books.

7. I'm a very fast reader. I used to finish off a book in two hours. Now the speed has lessened to around four hours.

8. My favourite reading spot is bed, preferably on a rainy day(with lots of thunder) and a mug of coffee with a bar of chocolate.

9.I still can't figure out why such a lot of girls have a crush on Mr.Darcy from P&P.

10.Book shopping for me requires a good three to four hours, plenty of time to read through the blurbs, bookworm friends and a good ice cream before and after:)!

message 31: by Dulini (last edited Mar 26, 2013 05:44AM) (new)

Dulini | 5 comments Most of you probably don’t know anything about me, but that aside let me introduce my reading habits
1. I simply can’t fall asleep without having a book in my hand. If the book gets really interesting I stay wakeup the whole night.
2. Even though I love the smell of a new book, I feel nauseated by dusty old books, therefore I prefer reading with my e-reader.
3. My favorite place to read is the hammock I had in my home in Sri Lanka. These days I read on my bed and on comfy Japanese trains.
4. My entire childhood was spent reading Russian fictions because I inherited a complete collection from my uncle. Most of them were Sinhala translations.
5. I also read a lot of good Sinhala books written by Sumithra Rahubadda, Sunethra rajakaruna, Saiman Nawagattegama and Martin Wickramasingha.
6. As a kid my biggest dream was to have a huge library in my house and I spent all my pocket money buying books.
7. I don’t re-read books which is not a good habit however I have reread “Daddy long legs” more than 15 times. Probably because I have so much in common with Judy Abbot.
8. I like Indian literature. Hands down my all-time favorite book is Gora from Tagore. I also loved Apu trilogy
9. Life of pie is one of the best books I have read recently.
10. I read anything that is well written from any genre.

May I add that LOTR could have been better if he mixed the story of Frodo and the Rest of the fellowship [In Two Towers and Return of the king] , like in the movies , other than putting them in two parts in the book.

message 40: by Dilina (new)

Dilina Hello! Ok 10 things? Hmm...

1. I think the mark of a good book is not just how readable it is, but how re-readable it is.

2. A little ashamed to say I do judge a book by it's cover more often than I care to admit, and I've paid the price for it both literally and figuratively :D

3. Physical book always better than an ebook

4. However I love ebooks. I don't think they're a threat to physical books, but a companion. I read mostly on ebooks now and save my money for special editions of beloved books.

5. Books I love tend to be a little, if not very, outside the norm and not many share my love of them.

6. I can't read on the go, I get motion sickness, and I hate that. >_<

7. That said, I will read anything on anything (book, tablet, phone, laptop, pc), anywhere I can find a comfortable place to park myself.

8. It took me quite a few ill treated books to realize I shouldn't lend books to mere "readers" but to people that appreciate what a precious object a printed book is all on it's own.

9. I could read pretty fast even in middle school. A Hardy Boys took about half an hour. So I'd secretly read the books my friends brought to exchange while in the middle of a period so that way I'd have read the book and didn't have to go through a book exchange :D I think I can read faster now, but never checked.

10. Goodreads was at first a way to keep track of what I had read, but now it's really turned into a social network for me and I'm actually talking of books with other people because of goodreads postings.

:)

Indika (1ndika) | 14 comments I'm new to this group so this also serves as an introduction.

1. I haven't read many books.

2. I started off reading Sinhala translations of Sherlock Holmes and renowned books.

3. The Da Vinci Code is what made me read modern (is that the right word?) English novels.

4. I love old books. I can spend hours just flipping through books if given a chance.

5. I prefer a physical book to an ebook (even though I read a lot of pdfs)
6. I read rented second hand books.

7. I rarely re-read a book (therefore I do not buy physical books much). This also applies to movies, which I am a huge fan of.

8. I read really slow. I mean extreeeaaaamly slow. It takes me at least 2 weeks to finish a book. So I like fast paced books. Others are virtually impossible for me to read.

9. I read while travelling. If you see a guy, standing on a crowded bus reading a pdf on a tiny phone, that might be me. (I usually have a pdf version of the book I am currently reading on my phone. Ready to read anywhere I want to)

10. My ideal atmosphere; reading a great book when it's raining cats and dogs sipping a big mug of coffee.

Here goes my 10.

1. Started reading avidly after reading a book from the series Malory Towers by Enid Blyton when i was 9, and had been reading non stop ever since. (its been nearly 2 decades now - yikes, I'm old now)
2. Strongly dislike audio books, only uses ebooks for short stories (and only if theres no other option). I always have the pages associated with the scenes in books, so for me ebooks/audio books doesn't make sense or give me that thrill of re-reading them in my mind.
3. I read everything and anything, but my fav genres are fantasy fiction and science fiction
4. Never have i found a book that i disliked as much as twilight (book 1, couldn't make myself read for more than 2 pages, no matter how hard i tried)
5. As a couple of people above me stated, my bed has about 6 books at any given time.
6. I read till i fall asleep. Which sometimes is a problem, if im too engrossed in it. (In which case i do not sleep the whole night and go to work like a zombie in the morning)
7. Fell in love with classics after reading Shirley by Charlotte Bronte (If you guys haven't read it yet and you like Jane Austen, I guarantee you'll like this one)
8. 2 entire sides of my bedroom are floor to ceiling book cases filled with books that i have read and liked and bought over the years.
9. Big fan of Harry Potter and Arthur C Clarke novels.
10. Top 5 books for me, off the top of my head are, The Stand - Stephen King, Harry Potter Series(5th and 7th are my favorites), Fountains of Paradise - Arthur C Clarke, Not a penny more Not a penny less - Jeffery Archer and Magician - Raymond Feist. (In no particular order)

P&P is definitely not overrated. It's a very practical view of how everyday people interact and judge and fall in love for me. (Not the glowing in the sunlight vs shirtless kind of love portrayed in some romance novels !)

Uthpala Dassanayake | 6 comments Hi Samodh, as you asked about second hand book shops, I found quite a lot of good books (including booker, pulitzer winners and nominates) at Sarasavi book shop's secondhand store at Nugegoda. Its on the same street as Sarasavi main building towards railway crossing.

Sandeep Ellawala (ellawala) | 1 comments Hi All,

I was looking for a local group of people to share my passion for reading and I am glad I found this group. Here goes my 10 things.

1. I always prefer printed books even though I own a Kindle.
2. All my favourite books fall into "Fantasy/Si-Fi" category.
3. I have a passion for collecting books as much as reading them.
4. I am very bad at keeping track of returning days of library books.
5. I am working towards building a personal library at home.
6. I dream of reading bed time stories to my children one day.
7. I want to leave my book collection as my legacy to my own children and grand children. (*kinda silly given that I am still in my twenties*)
8. I cannot stop but wanting to discuss with someone about a book once I have read it.
9. During reading frenzies (*yes I have them*) more than once have I wanted to leave my job as an Engineer and become a librarian so that I can read whole day long.
10. I have studied speed reading, but I never use it when I read because it just takes the fun away from reading.
