What about 'The Queen and I' by Sue Townsend....an old title but could be amusing given that she also wrote the Adrian Mole books

or maybe more appropriately 'Elizabeth the Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch' by Sally Bedell Smith - looks interesting as seems to be more about her private life.

its not all about queen elizabeth the first of scotland and second of england, wales and northern ireland

its more books around time of jubilee not the monarchs themselves

O.K. sorry! - but as The Queen figures quite strongly in The Jubilee I thought these titles were relevant :-) Be interesting to see what people come up with - Chris' suggestion is good esp as we have it at our branch!

only 3 english monarchs have had golden jubilees i know 2 were females lol

The Eliza Graham book Jubilee, which Chris mentioned, does look good. It looks like it's set during this Jubilee, but isn't really about it. I may have to add it to my TBR list.

Have finished this in super quick time, I won't give anything away but I thought it was a really good read, fast paced, well written - glad it was suggested and chosen, hope you enjoy it!

I picked up "my" copy from the library about a week ago. I've got some stuff I must read first, but I'm itching to start it.

collected mine this morning as thought was still in transit as was returning book and librarian said got a book here for you to collect :) the normal librarian I see thesedays is one with a scanner, pad and a screen ( as my main library is a self service one open 6am-10pm)

how do you find self-service library Stephen? I couldn't get to grips with the scanner when I tried and I work in a library!!!

Suppose good thing is that the opening hours can be alot longer - that said my library is pretty unique - we are open 7 days a week 10.30-5.30 including Bank Hoildays only one in Wales I believe and possibly only one in the U.K.

well to book books out you dont use a scanner its put on a pad which then knows what the book is etc the only thing you scan is your library card to take books out

yes, when I say 'scanner' I mean the whole machine, was a bad use of words!!!! I wonder how much trouble there would be in terms of people claiming to have returned or not remembering that they took a certain book out - happens alot, where we get people saying they definitely brought a book back or that they never loaned it, and 9 times out of 10 they have just forgotten they have it....if you've not got face to face communications with the library staff I wonder how many of those types of cases would remain unsorted?! Also, we've had cases of people swopping dust jackets, wonder how the machine would recognise a book inside a different dust jacket?!

when you have finished either taking out or returning items you get a receipt

The library books in my library have what looks like a white address label stuck inside the back cover (but on the book, not on the dust jacket). It's a bit thicker than a real address label, but not much. That's what the scanner reads to identify the book, so it ignores the dust jacket. I think the sticker would get damaged if anyone tried to remove it so I don't think it could be moved into another book.

That's what happens in Luton libraries too. Seems to be working ok.

yes most of the problems gone now from the system but the older books cause a few problems though

Finished Jubilee this morning, but I felt a bit disappointed. For me, there was too much chopping and changing of the time phases. Interested enough to want to know what happened, but was a bit confused at times!

I didn't find the time changes too bad which is amazing cos usually that really irriates me. I liked the story though so overlooked the faults I guess

I think it might have been better if I'd read it in paperback, rather than kindle, then I could have easily flipped back and forth. I don't mind two time changes, but just felt a bit swamped....maybe I'm getting past it:)

I gave up on Jubilee last Friday. The time changes made the plot seem to go around in circles as far as I was concerned. I wasn't thinking "shall I give up?", but I just turned over a page and read that the next section was another letter about that awful Japanese prisoner of war camp and shut the book. I just couldn't take any more meandering around.
