Do you like to listen to audio books to enable yourself to use your free time for books?

message 2302: by Susan (last edited Aug 12, 2015 07:38PM) (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments Yes, I listen to audiobooks while I'm doing housework or on the treadmill. For me, it's a good way to "experience" a book I wouldn't necessarily want to spend time on.

Are you into e-books?

message 2303: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6879 comments No.
Which book has been your favourite read this year?

What is the most number of books you have on the go at any one time?

message 2305: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments Three (or maybe four)

Do you get impatient waiting for the next book from your favourite author(s)?

message 2306: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4428 comments Not really as my physical shelf at home is bursting!

Do you enjoy reading in the bath?

message 2307: by Noelene (new)

Noelene | 364 comments Hate it. The water always goes cold.Prefer reading in bed.

What is the most number of books you have read in one year?

Neko 65 books and I've never reached it since.

What is a television show you cannot stand?

message 2310: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments Any reality TV [shudder]

Do you have pay TV and/or cable?

message 2311: by K (new)

K | 1143 comments Yes I just got Foxtel a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely love it! ALL of my shows are on it- and hardly any are played on regular TV.

What books do you wish would get made into a TV series?

message 2312: by Noelene (new)

Noelene | 364 comments No pay TV in this house. Don't have the time to watch "normal" TV without falling asleep.

What TV series has survived the test of time for you?

message 2313: by K (new)

K | 1143 comments Buffy.

Same question as I posted before.

message 2314: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments Some of Ronald Frame's books would make a wonderful TV series; because many of them are set in English seaside towns, the stories could be reworked well for TV. Many of the characters are seething with sexual jealousy and repression — I'd definitely tune in!

Which is your favourite film/TV adaptation of a book?

message 2315: by K (new)

K | 1143 comments Poldark, Outlander and Divergent!

Your least favourite adaption for film/television?

message 2316: by Noelene (new)

Noelene | 364 comments Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Once I heard he was playing that character could not go further and watch movie.

message 2319: by Noelene (new)

Noelene | 364 comments No, My sister isn't into reading at all as a pastime. Prefers gardening and scrap booking.

How much time per day on average do you spend reading?

message 2320: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments It's hard to say — because the time I spend reading each day varies enormously, I couldn't even guess at the average!

Do you read a wide variety of books, or pretty much stick to one or two genres?

message 2321: by Noelene (new)

Noelene | 364 comments Most of my books are thriller/ suspense/some romance for a light read but this year have set a challenge to read less of these genre and try others including fantasy which I have steered clear of.

If a group of people arrived on your doorstep unannounced what would you serve them for tea?

message 2322: by Susan (last edited Aug 16, 2015 12:37PM) (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments I wouldn't serve them anything! Instead, I would suggest going to a nearby restaurant or cafe.

Rephrasing my question: Do you read YA novels? If you do, what is their appeal?

message 2323: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4428 comments I don't read a lot of them, but the other day when I chose one off my shelf, I think I thought of it as a trip down memory lane. I enjoyed it.

Do you ever randomly chose your next read?

message 2324: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments No, I always have my next book in mind — usually something very different to the one I am currently reading.

Do you recycle/donate books, or just keep acquiring them?

message 2325: by Noelene (new)

Noelene | 364 comments I always recycle and donate books. I separate them to according to who I know would like a particular book. They know that I don;t want it back and they can keep, pass on or donate. Others that are of a better quality new booksI give to my friend to sell at her stall that she has that raises money for breast cancer ( last year the stall and her events raised $10000) Others that I had already bought from Lifeline etc. I donate back to them so that they can sell again.

The only books I keep are children's books and my work related material. I treat my books like a good meal at a restaurant. I savor the experience and then move onto to the next course.

I can afford to do this as I rarely pay for a book win them, or people lend them to me or I buy at the op shops.

What is your best find at an op shop? ( Doesn't have to be a book)

message 2326: by Susan (last edited Aug 18, 2015 04:04PM) (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments I'm scared to look too hard at op shops as I'm trying to declutter, rather than acquire more stuff! I guess my best find — and just about the only things I've ever bought at an op shop — was many, many years ago when I was invited to a "Suburban" themed party. I found a wonderful Hawaiian-print dress and a scarf with a map of Fiji on it, which I wore over curlers. I completed my ensemble with thongs and a Decor BYO wine cooler (which I see has come back into fashion).

I thought I looked great, but unfortunately my taxi driver took umbrage at my ironic sense of fancy dress and threatened to throw me out of the taxi!

Do you like the smell of seondhand book stores?

message 2327: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4428 comments Not if they're smelly ;)

What is a book that you think is underrated, or one which should be more talked about than what it is?

message 2328: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments The book I'm reading at the moment, Adeline: A Novel of Virginia Woolf, by Norah Vincent. It was published only this year, but I've read very little buzz about it, and am surprised at the number of negative reviews here at GoodReads.

Which book, or books, do you think are highly overrated?

message 2329: by Stef (new)

Stef Rozitis The Chimes but someone did say it was shortlisted for an award

Share a good memory from work....

message 2330: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments This memory is more for the "bizarre" category, but I remember leaving work late one afternoon on a beautiful spring day. It was the Friday before a long weekend and most of the office-workers had already left. I was standing on the pavement chatting with a colleague, when we saw a tumbleweed rolling down the opposite pavement! [Insert your own Canberra joke here]

Do you enjoy children's books?

message 2331: by Noelene (new)

Noelene | 364 comments Yes! I particularly love picture books and look forward each year to Children's Book Week to see the winner announced. Really liked Pig The Pug. Loved the eyes on the pug!!!!!

If you had to be a famous detective from a crime novel who would you be?

message 2332: by Stef (new)

Stef Rozitis Oooooooh yes I do. Here is just one of my shelves to prove it: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

What is the best snack to have while reading?

message 2333: by Stef (new)

message 2334: by Neko (new)

Neko i try not to eat while reading as i worry about the book getting mucky...but last night i read on my kindle n ate an icecream n read...was goooood! So that's a half answer i guess!!

Do you have much planned for the weekend?

message 2335: by Suz (new)

Suz | 4428 comments Nothing that is exciting, I think I may have to paint or pull weeds in my part of the yard that needs to be re turfed. Will probably have to be a taxi for children at some stage. Grrr lol.

What was the last book you told someone to steer clear of?

message 2336: by Noelene (new)

Noelene | 364 comments It is Paperweight by Stephen Fry. Although I haven't finished reading it yet. It is part of the TBR challenge. You need a dictionary and some very good skills at working at what words mean in context ( luckily for me that is the skill that I am teaching this week and have researched thoroughly the most effective techniques to teach children). I have really needed those skills. I think I prefer to read Shakespeare.

I will finish it ( it's part of a challenge) and then it is going to only one person I know that possibly could handle it but he has been prewarned.

Which Miles Franklin book award winner did you enjoy the most?

message 2337: by Susan (last edited Aug 21, 2015 10:28AM) (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments If you mean past Miles Franklin winners, it would have to be Dancing On Coral by Glenda Adams — an amazing book!

Who is/are your favourite Australian author/s?

(Noelene — I'm not a fan of Stephen Fry either.)

message 2338: by Dale (new)

Do you buck the trend with anything?

message 2342: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments We refuse to get pay TV, so I suppose that's bucking one trend.

What is your favourite method of watching films and/or TV shows?

message 2343: by Noelene (new)

Noelene | 364 comments A few things......

I didn't want an Ipad under any circumstances. But the universe conspired against me and I won one in a raffle. I only use it if I am sick and I can't get out of bed. Don't do music in the car or on ipads, ipods and definitely no earphones.!!!!

Also not into gym work outs or juice bars.

I won't read an ebook. Paper for me.

What is the oldest book in your possession?

Which is better tea or coffee?

message 2350: by Susan (last edited Aug 23, 2015 04:31AM) (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 452 comments Stef wrote: "Possibly camel.

Camel!?!? CAMEL?

As for dragon fruit, it looks as though it would be delicious, but tastes like soggy cotton wool. Blech!

The tea/coffee issue is a tough one. As you can tell from my avatar, I do enjoy a nice cuppa. But then I'm dependent on coffee, so my answer is ... both!

Which book character did you want to be when you were a child?
