Theories on Brenda and Jorje?

After finishing the series I'm left wondering about Brenda and Jorje. In Scorch they are described as teenagers about the same age as the Gladers. In Death Cure we find out that they are actually immune Wicked employees. We know Jorje is a pilot but what was Brenda's job at Wicked? Jorje went to the Scorch because Brenda went, but did she volunteer or did they pick her for some reason? Why were they variables for the Gladers and not subjects themselves. Anyone have any ideas?
