Why in tangerine do they have those pits that cause a ton of smoke

Since Paul stared into a solar eclipse, he has to wear really thick goggles.
Erik is Paul's older brother. Erick and his friends always make fun of him and pick on him, for example, Erik and his friends always call Paul "eclipse boy" since he practically got blinded from looking into a solar eclipse.
