Series' That Bug You

I just finished a book called Lucinda, Darkly. I finished but it took some effort. It was a really boring read. I didn't care for any of the characters. I just wanted the book to end since I put it on a list for a reading challenge I'm participating in.

I had to give up LA Banks "Vampire Huntress" after about 4 books. The books kept getting longer and longer (in a "desperately needs an editor" and not a "Wow, this story is complex!" kind of way. I also started to really dislike the protagonist and the love story.

I also really loved the "Game of Thrones" books up until the fourth and fifth installments which were short on action and long on pages. I actually found myself fantasizing that the author would lapse into a coma and the publisher would secretly hire ghost writers to wrap up the storyline for him.

For me it is the Karen Marie Moning Fever series. People absolutely raved about this series. I, otoh, slogged through three books before giving up. A lot of nothing happens until author decides to end each installment a cliffhanger. But really, I was just bored. Everybody kept telling me that the payoff in book five is spectacular. But I shouldn't have to make it through the fifth book for something to happen.

Re; Game of Thrones: I agree. Storm of Swords, the 3rd book, is imo, outstanding. Just wonderful. And emotionally intense. I can't even watch the show right now because of what I know happens in Storm of Swords. But man, the fourth book was such a let down after SOS. And even though I bought the fifth book, I still haven't read it yet.

Yeah. I really wanted to sew what would happen between Carlos and Damali, but sometimes it just dragged on. I may continue to book 4 eventually.

Laurell K Hamiltons Anita Blake series is really annoying me, she seems to be repeating herself and its only about sex now and no real plot. the same goes for he other series Merry Gentry

One thing I hate that I've noticed over and over again is the tendency some authors have into making the female (human) protagonist some kind of super woman with a magical vagina that no man can resist.

Literally every single man she encounters will suddenly be madly in love her and even though she is 100% human being she magically has Slayer like abilities to heal herself and continue fighting crime without so much as popping an Advil, even after being thrown down a flight of stairs.

But man, the fourth book was such a let down after SOS. And even though I bought the fifth book, I still haven't read it yet.

Don't do it. It will just make you angry. I hope HBO departs from the book storyline after SoS and just starts making it up as they go along or Season 4 and 5 will be unwatchable.

The Anita Blake series burned out for me too. I couldn't get into Karen Moning Fever series, I even tried to listen to it as an audiobook. It didn't grab me andvI love Fae/Fey. I would also like to add but not sure it applies b/c not exactly interracial, the ghostwalker series by Christine Feehan. That series irked the hell out of me.

Anita Blake series started being more porn than plot, so I was done with that. I had such high hopes for Merry Gentry, but it was the same old same old. I got tired of Christine Feehan's Carpathian series. Just being curious, but what don't you like about her ghostwalker series?

The trylle series by Amanda hawking I hear movie buzz but I can't even bring myself to be interested in the 2nd installment I just can't identify with the characters and the plot is lacking to me.

I read the Hunger Games and refused to read the 2nd or 3rd books. I don't get why people loved this so much.

I do agree with Trickiegyrl about the Carpathian series ... the last book I didn't read & the one before that was only one of two that I bought --- I'm waiting on one specific story so I'll stay abreast of who's story is coming out ... I also feel that way about BDB series, I liked all of them but I don't know if I'll buy or read the most recent one. I'm still hooked on the Anita Blake series though!

I think my biggest difficulty is authors who write 20+ book series --- that stuff is EXPENSIVE and there's always some books that just aren't worth it!!

I really liked the first book of The Hunger Games because I loved all the supporting characters. I found the second book boring and the third one was just awful. I have no desire to see the next two movies.

I kind of hate that everything is expected to become a series these days when some stories really don't deserve to be drawn out into multiple books.

Natalie, I've read two of Sunny's books and they are...lacking. It's too bad. I really love the world of her Monere but couldn't connect with the characters. And Sunny luvs herself some healing sex a little too much.

Sad as it makes me I've quit the BDB. It's got sooo many problems and just isn't a fun read anymore.

I tried to get into the Anita Blake series but it was right after season 6 of Buffy aired, the worst season ever imho. I had too many flashbacks to Buffy and Spike while reading and I had to put the novel down.

Haha! That is an excellent reason to not read the AB series (season 6 of Buffy was the one with the twin robot thingy right?? and when Dru and Darla were back in the mix ... right?)

I see that I'm not the only one who gave up on LKH. I gave up on the Anita series once Anita became so utterly unlikable that I was actively hoping the bad guys would just kill her already and stop trying to f*ck her.

I gave up on the Merry Gentry series when it became clear that LKH had failed biology as a kid. Merry's baby has something like 5 genetic fathers. Her egg was fertilized by FIVE sperm... simultaneously! LKH, you fail biology forever. Plus it was just TOO wish fullfillment for me.

Seriously though, LKH is the reason why you should never divorce the guy who helped you outline your entire series and then marry the hugest male fanboy you have. Also your editor should not be involved with your fanclub. Your editor is there to tell you when you've jumped the shark and well... to EDIT.

When all you ever hear is how fabulous you are and how everything you write is so special it's practically made from unicorn tears... you turn into her.

I actually just this morning finished by Sabrina Somethingorother.

It's not that I didn't like it, but I didn't LIKE it either, y'know? I basically finished it 'cuz it was a free book and I have this weird drive to finish any book I start.

Seriously, it bothers me when I can't finish a book I've honestly started reading.

Still, I'm actually glad I'm done with it and will probably never look at it again. Very strong on that probably, at that!

Sadly though Danielle, it's become a trope in PNR. Magical manly bits and girly bits. Once put into play they solve all problems!

I have nothing against people of age having consensual sex of whatever form they wish. I do however have an issue with them having sex instead of solving whatever is wrong with them.

Vaginas and penises (Peni? What is the plural here?) are not magical and they will not solve all your problems. I find myself muttering that when I'm reading sometimes.

KMM's Fever series: I hate, Hate, HATE the heroine. I'm sorry but there's absolutely no reason for anyone to be that stupid and annoying.

Larissa Ione's Lords of Deliverance series: I like the premise of the entire thing. Apocolypse is coming, the world is going nuts etc, etc. But the heroes are all assholes and for no apparent reason and the heroines just TAKE it. Smh.

I like IAD but the characters can just irk me to no end and at times, appear to be exactly the same, personality and physically speaking. I'm sorry but if damn near every man is seen as broad chested with chisled facial features and every woman is curvy with rose colored lips, they all start running together and there's no way I'll be able to distinguish between anyone.

Lynn Viehl's Kyndred series: I overall love her writing especially seeing as her Darkyn series is one of my favorites. But something about the Kyndred really does not sit right with me. Idk if they just bore me or what. I just can't get into it.

I completely agree. I think part of it is due to the fact that they're not as interesting as their Darkyn counterparts and we weren't given enough reason to care about them.

Dark Breed series by Sable Grace. The heroine is so unlikable I can't stand it. I would have DNF'd the second book if it wasn't a review book!

I can't stand some of the childish heroines in Urban Fantasy (some pnr too!) People have been raving over and while I loved the world building, Rachel was kinda childish, annoying & tstl.
I hated Kitty was also naive & tstl and the ending was depressing as hell! I like dark and gritty but I don't do depressing ;^)

ditto on the LA Banks and LKH. there's another series I can't remember the author, but it was about a witch and titles from old west movies, "a few witches short" or some such. i liked the first two, shoved 3 more down, and I've downloaded number 6 and haven't started it. a witch living with a vampire who loves her, a shady boyfriend into dark magic, and demons trying to steal her soul. meh.

Sookie Stackhouse mysteries. I'm over the whole thing, the last book was about absolutely nothing and she compared a female indian vamp to a pier one doll or painting or something. I was so turned off that I vowed to stop reading the series.
