Christine | 13 comments I had already set a goal for myself to read a book each week when LizB told me about this group. I've already started....I've read 5 books in the last 5 weeks. I'm hoping to do a mix of fiction/non-fiction and this looks like a great way to stay on track and get ideas for new books to read!

message 2: by Dini (new)

Dini Glad you're here with us, Christine! I'm gearing up for 2009 myself :)

message 3: by Melanie (new)

Melanie | 487 comments Hi - I am newbie too. This seems like a really great group! I have long TBR list that I can hopefully catch up on in 2009.

message 4: by Danine (new)

Danine (dulcemea) Please do! Welcome and good luck to you both :)

message 5: by Mike (new)

Mike (justwords) | 27 comments I'll be throwing in my hat next year, too.

message 6: by Mel (new)

Mel Hello Everyone,
I just found this group today and thus far have read 52 books for 2008, so I'm very much looking forward to doing the same for 2009.

message 7: by Liz B (new)

Liz B (lizb) | 104 comments Hooray for Christine joining!

*looks around*

Didn't Radu join, too?

message 8: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (toomuch2read) OK I think I would like to tackle this too. With a toddler I finally have time to read more then the newspaper and magazines again! I have to finish the Twilight series before the new year and then onward and upward!

message 9: by Wendy T (new)

Wendy T I just joined to start January 2009. All setup and ready to go. Happy Reading all in 2009.

message 10: by Tonya (new)

Tonya (nyab2000) Hi! I would love to get in on this challenge. I love to read and there are so many books on my TBR list so this would be the perfect way to tackle them all :)

message 11: by JLynn (new)

JLynn (authorjlynnautumn) | 16 comments I just joined good reads today hoping to get great ideas for books in 2009. I have a long TBR list and I think this is just the group I need for 2009. I'm up for a 50 book in a year challenge this will be great.

message 12: by Jen B (new)

Jen B (jennybee618) Hi! I just joined, too. I'm finishing up (today) my 41st book for 2008. But I've read 21 of those just in the past 3 months alone, so I'm thinking I can make it to 50 in 2009. I, too, am trying to whittle down my huge TBR pile!

message 13: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) I am going to try this for 2009 too. I am new to this group but not new to goodreads. I think this will be a fun challenge.

Good luck everyone and Happy New YEAR!!!!

message 14: by Leshawn (new)

Leshawn | 460 comments I am throwing my hat in the ring as well! I'd love to be part of this challenge for 2009.

message 17: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine (jasminelparks) hello. i'm a newbie!

message 18: by Mary Todd (new)

Mary Todd (marytodd) | 924 comments Welcome to you all! Good luck and happy posting. It's really fun to see what everyone is reading. There is a trivia game on Goodreads that is really fun. When I do the trivia I get new ideas for books to read that I would never have thought of. In fact, that is why I read the Twilight books...there were so many questions about them I got curious.

message 19: by Camila (new)

Camila Hi! I just started today too because I tried to reach 50 in 2008 and will do it again (and succeed) this year!!! = D

message 20: by Sue (new)

Sue (suedomis) I just joined the group. It sounds like a good idea. I don't have trouble being motivated to read but I don't know if I can do 50 in 12 months, we'll see. Which year do you count a book in if you finished more than half of it in the new year?

message 21: by Vilde (new)

Vilde (vildea) I just joined this group (I stumbled upon it somehow, can't recall how, it's been in my bookmarks for awhile anyhow) and I'm going to try my best to hit 50. I fell awfully short this year; 23 books read. I read that many during my summer holiday in '07 =/ Oh well, fingers crossed for '09 I guess :D

message 22: by Amy (new)

Amy | 11 comments One of my friends turn me onto this group. I think that it is a great idea. I can't wait to get started!

My 1st book of 2009 is Suite Francaise.

message 23: by Molly (new)

Molly | 330 comments I recently chatted with someone who just gave a stellar review to Suite Francaise on their blog and I think I will be borrowing it from my mom very soon! There is also an exhibit in NYC through March about the author and her work = http://www.mjhnyc.org/irene/index.html

message 24: by Melanie (last edited Jan 10, 2009 07:56AM) (new)

Melanie | 487 comments Amy - I hope you like Suite Francaise. I really enjoyed it. Fire in the Blood, by her, is also pretty good.

message 25: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Hello-

I am hoping to join for 2009...I really have been upping my reading totals and read over 30 last year. I am hoping to increase that and am shooting for 50! Always looking for new ideas on book topics!

Sara - Book Happy Girl (sarafree) Hello! I'm a newbie too! Always looking for a good book, and I want to read more this year.

Sara

message 27: by Emily (new)

Emily (ohmagichour) I just joined as well - relatively sure I read at least 50 last year, but didn't keep good enough track - looking forward to it this year! Good luck all!

message 28: by Aprile (new)

Aprile (aprileb) I'm new :) I have no idea how many books I read last year but I am looking forward to keeping track this year!

message 29: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Schryver (dschryver) I just joined and am quite excited for the challenge!

message 30: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan (jonathanadams) | 826 comments I just joined. Quick question: do we comic book collections as books? Last year I read 77 books, if you include the entire Y: The Last Man Series in books that collected the whole series and a bunch of Batman collections.

message 31: by Molly (new)

Molly | 330 comments I think you can count whatever you want - it's your list after all. Some people don't count books they re-read, some do. Some count children's books, come don't. Some count books read for school, some don't.

message 32: by Mary Todd (new)

Mary Todd (marytodd) | 924 comments Welcome to you all!!! Molly is right...it's your list, your goal. Sharing a wee bit about how you felt about the books you read help others discover new authors and new genres. Best of luck.

message 33: by Michael (new)

Michael (bigorangemichael) | 52 comments I have particpated in the 50 book challenge the past two years and really enjoyed it.

I'm back in this year.

I look forward to seeing what everyone else reads and maybe finding some new things to add on my to be read pile...

message 34: by Michael (last edited Feb 25, 2009 03:35AM) (new)

Michael (bigorangemichael) | 52 comments Jonathan wrote: "I just joined. Quick question: do we comic book collections as books? Last year I read 77 books, if you include the entire Y: The Last Man Series in books that collected the whole series and a bunc..."

I face the same conundrum. For me, it depends on the length of the graphic novel or collection. Something like "Watchmen" I count as one book. I will group others together, like when I pick up a trade paperback collection of Spider-Man comics or I will lump together a couple of trade collections into one book. But that's just how I do it and shouldn't be take as the "right" or "wrong" way...

message 35: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (dollydagger) I was wondering if I could join as well? I participated in '07 via a livejournal community. But this seems a lot more organized.

message 36: by Molly (new)

Molly | 330 comments Sure Kirsten - anyone can join - no permission needed. Have fun with your list!

message 37: by Christin (new)

Christin | 3 comments I've just joined myself! Do we update others with books we've read or leave behind reviews? This is the first time I've joined an active group with such a lofty goal!

message 38: by Molly (new)

Molly | 330 comments Create a folder for yourself in the A-E discussion board and in there you create your list. It can be just the name of the book and author or you can add a your thoughts or link to your review of them or whatever you want.

If you click on other people's folders you can get an idea of all the different ways people set them up.

message 39: by Danine (new)

Danine (dulcemea) Christin wrote: "I've just joined myself! Do we update others with books we've read or leave behind reviews? "

In the thread you establish for your list of books you can be as active or detailed as you want to be. Some people include their reviews or a link to their reviews. Some people simply list their books. Molly described it perfectly. Good luck :)

message 40: by Jamie (new)

Jamie | 7 comments Just joined too. Looking forward to counting the books I read for 09.

message 41: by Nadya (new)

Nadya (nanaissance) | 51 comments hi there all. i've just joined this group.

message 42: by Mary Todd (new)

Mary Todd (marytodd) | 924 comments Welcome to all!!! It's a great place to count your books and get introduced to new authors!

message 43: by Danine (new)
