I liked the book fairly well. Gave it a 3. There were a few areas that I didn't fully grasp, but after reading the authors notes, some of it made more sense. This book was quite slow for me, and it took me quite a while to really get into it. It seems I read one or more of you all were having some similar challenges. Finally I just forced myself to read so I could finish it. Glad I did, cause it ended better than it started.

I gave it a 3. I liked the story and the book, although I felt it drag in parts. I read it quickly and enjoyed the characters and plot...even though it was heartbreaking. I felt like the ending was somewhat contrived though.

I have to admit I did not care for the book at all. I couldn't even make through 1/3 of the way. I think the overall premise was fine, but the narration was so awkward. I still have it for a few more weeks, so maybe the discussion will inspire me to continue on...

I'm with you on this Julie...haven't finished it yet, and see myself struggling to get through the rest. I don't think I've bought into the characters and the story line yet. There hasn't been a strong enough grip to pull me in. I also still have time with my copy... But I'm picking up April's read on Wed, so I might just move on at that point.

I gave it a 3. The first chapter was adequately interesting and dramatic, and then I felt like I kept waiitng for the book to START ..... and then it was over! The plotting lacked direction, the pace was bizarre--so jumpy with inane details and then fast-forward 25 years and oh by the way Martha is now dead, and I agree with Meghan that the ending was SUPER contrived.

Some of the writing was pretty good, but overall, the various points of view and (weak) plots just didn't tie together to create a very cohesive novel. I felt like Simon was banking on the tragedy of the situation of people with special needs in such institutions to carry to story--and its impact--forward, so she shortchanged the actual writing of it.
