Natasha | 19 comments Thank you, I think I will. Everyone seems really nice on here so far and I like that we're all readers. Nice to have a conversation with someone who's read a book since Cat and the Hat!

Well I hope one of them is not publish america...if it is narrow your decision down to two by crossing them off the list. I hate it when I find an author who mistakenly falls into their trap.

Oh believe me, came close...the number would be four if I included them. In a group that I was in some guy said he was published and suggested them, so I added them to one of the batches of queries I sent out. when they offered me a contract I decided to do some research (would have been smarter the other way around but I'm not used to dealing with this kind of thing, lol) After looking at the reviews and hearing about the charges against them I decided to take my baby (book) and run far, far away. Now before I send a query I look up the publisher. The three I've heard from are reputable, and besides that my father is insisting no matter how good the contract looks he wants his lawyer to look at it before I sign. I never thought being a writer was going to get this complicated. I'm excited but scared to death if that makes any sense.

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments So here is the biggest piece of advice I can give...Look at the prices and distribution of the books by each pubisher. Publish America's contract looks great - that is the worst part about them. But then you notice that their books are priced way past market value ($27.00 for a 163 page paperback for instance). If you find a publisher who has a number of titles that are "reasonably priced" and available through multiple distribution channels AND the contract looks good then you should be all set.

Natasha | 19 comments Thank for the advice...the book prices did kinda bug me, and the no advertising thing. I read something by a critic of the company and it hit me hard. It said "Many aspiring writers think all they want is to be published...but when it happened with publish America they realised all they really wanted was to be read." Without a good published who loves my book as much as I do that will never happen. I don't car if it's a big name publisher or a small press. If they love the book then it'll make it as far as it's meant to and that is the best I can ask for. Ok done being sentimental! lol. Wish me luck!
