Jonny | 2115 comments Liking the idea of 75th anniversary (ties into Mike's suggestions about paras, CBI and even behind the lines?) Couple of author reads might not hurt either! Perhaps a post 45 theme as well?

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Post 45 is a good suggestion as well Jonny, thanks.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Who would like to join Liam in a buddy read of ""The Road not Taken"?

The Road Not Taken Edward Lansdale and the American Tragedy in Vietnam by Max Boot The Road Not Taken: Edward Lansdale and the American Tragedy in Vietnam by Max Boot

Liam (dimestoreliam) | 498 comments Thanx Rick; I don't remember who was all in on the discussion a couple of months ago, but I seem to recall there were at least 4 or 5 group members who either had copies already or were planning to get one. As I noted previously, we could also broaden the scope from that one book to have a "theme read" on the end of WWII in the Asia/Pacific region and its immediate aftermath. I'm ready whenever everyone else is, or if people would rather not do this formally, that's obviously fine also.

Also, I'll second Jonny's excellent suggestion above; that is more-or-less what I was getting at in my comment on the 'Post 1945 Conflicts' thread...

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments The final theme read for 2018 (December) is ready to go. The thread/page is open for discussion and the theme is any book or books of your choice that covers any campaign or battle that occurred during the final year of the war, 1945:

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments OK folks here is a list of suggested themes for 2019:

Feb. – Battles of 1944
April – Author theme
June – D-Day
Aug. – China, Burma, India Theater
Oct. – Naval battle/campaign (on or under the sea)
Dec. – Biography of a WW2 figure

I'm happy to consider other suggestions or the broadening of a certain theme.

Folks can also nominate which authors we should consider for the April theme read. Author's suggested so far are: Antony Beevor, Max Hastings, James Hornfischer, James Holland, David Glantz, Martin Middlebrook, Jay Stout and Rick Atkinson.

message 907: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments I also forgot to mention that we will be running a year long theme in 2019 on any book/s covering events in 1919, the Russian Civil War and/or the British and American intervention in that conflict.

message 908: by zed (new)

zed (4triplezed) | 951 comments That all looks good to me Rick. I have a couple of books on the shelf that suit 4 categories there and that would suit me for next year.

Jonny | 2115 comments Can I get an early vote in for Hastings or Holland for the author read?

message 914: by Marc (new)

Marc | 1748 comments Jonny wrote: "Can I get an early vote in for Hastings or Holland for the author read?"

When I originally suggested this to AR, I was thinking along the lines of choosing any book(s) from a particular author, chosen from a longer list of authors. Up to the reader to decide on which author they'd want to read.

I already have three Beevors, two Middlebrooks, one Hastings and a Stout in the pipeline for 2019.

message 915: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Betsy wrote: "The 1944 battles are Europe or Pacific, land or sea?"

As Marc confirmed its any book covering a battle in 1944, land air or sea in any theatre of the war.

message 916: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments The author's theme will be a book by any particular author that the group wants to include but it must be a author that has a number of WW2 books and is easy to access for group members. The current list includes; Antony Beevor, Max Hastings, James Hornfischer, James Holland, David Glantz, Martin Middlebrook, Jay Stout and Rick Atkinson, and members can select any one of their books to read.

Marc | 1748 comments Betsy wrote: "The 1944 battles are Europe or Pacific, land or sea?"

I had suggested this topic as 2019 will be the 75th anniversary of many of the pivotal battles of the war. If you need some help, here are a few suggestions:
Anzio
Kohima
D-Day
Operation Market Garden
Warsaw Uprising
Operation Bagration
Invasion of the Marshall Islands (Kwajalein, Enwietok, Roi-Namur)
Invasion of the Marianas (Saipan, Tinian, Guam)
Invasion of Leyte
Battle of the Philippine Sea ("Great Marianas Turkey Shoot")
Battle of Leyte Gulf
Cherkassy Pocket
Invasion of Southern France
Falaise Gap
Aachen

message 918: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments A excellent range of battles to choose from Marc!

message 919: by Colin (new)

Colin Heaton (colin1962) | 2011 comments I had the privilege of speaking with several veterans of most of those campaigns, James Gavin and John Frost (Market Garden), Leon Degrelle (Cherkassy), David McCampball and Alex Vraciu (Marianas Turkey Shoot), Gregor Koronov (Operation Begration), Johannes-Rudolf Muhlenkamp (Warsaw).

I have a suggestion for the Author Theme:
Carlos D'Este

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Yes, he has written three very good books on WW2.

message 922: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (last edited Dec 22, 2018 03:21PM) (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments OK, I've made a slight change for the 2019 themes. I have made June a combined D-Day and Battles of 1944 theme. So you can read a book covering one of the 75th anniversaries of a battle that took place in 1944 and being June there are a few battles that take pride of place if so desired.

The theme for February 2019 will be any book or books of your choice that covers the history of an army, navy or airforce that fought in WW2. For example:

Hitler's Soldiers The German Army in the Third Reich by Ben H. Shepherd Hitler's Soldiers: The German Army in the Third Reich by Ben H. Shepherd

or;

The Red Army and the Second World War by Alexander Hill The Red Army and the Second World War by Alexander Hill

So now the 2019 themes are:

Feb. – History of an Army of WW2
April – Author theme
June – D-Day & Battles of 1944
Aug. – China, Burma, India Theatre
Oct. – Naval battle/campaign (on or under the sea)
Dec. – Biography of a WW2 figure

AR: For February, do you mean a national army or a particular army such as the British 8th?

message 924: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (last edited Dec 22, 2018 08:17PM) (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments To clarify I meant it to be a national army, navy or airforce; British or British Commonwealth, American, Japanese, German, etc. However if folks find this too constrictive then I'm happy to expand the theme to cover national armies and a particular army, what do folks think?

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments I have opened the thread/page for the February 2019 theme read which is on any book or books of your choice that covers the history of any armed force that participated in WW2. That could be a national army, navy or airforce. For example; British or British Commonwealth, American, Japanese, German, etc. or a particular army, eg: German 6th Army, British 8th Army or US Eighth Air Force, etc.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19987 comments Just a reminder for group members who may be interested in joining in the April theme read that the subject is any WW2 book written by one of these authors - Antony Beevor, Max Hastings, James Holland, Martin Middlebrook, David Glantz, Jay Stout, Rick Atkinson and James Hornfischer.

For our Canadian members any WW2 book by Mark Zuehlke is fine.

April's a pretty full month, as I want to hit some Dark Ages history too (just finished season 3 of The Last Kingdom) and of course it's also the release month for John Connolly's latest detective book so it's looking to be pretty busy...
