'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments This is the schedule and topics for 2016 theme reads in the group:

Feb - Theme read on any sea battle or campaign of WW2.
Apr - Theme read on any air battle or campaign of WW2.
June - Theme read on any land battle or campaign of WW2.
Aug - Theme read on any personality of WW2.
Oct - Theme read on any unit involved in WW2 (unit history).
Dec - Theme read on any WW2 novel.

Now if folks wanted something else I am happy to have two separate themes a month so folks can participate in one of both, whatever takes their fancy. I have broken the reading months up so members can have a break in between to take up other reading commitments.

Bevan Lewis | 119 comments Sounds great and I like the idea of a novel.

OK for February - I'm thinking The Battle Of The Atlantic: How the Allies Won the War

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments A good choice Bevan, I may even join you with the same book!

message 608: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments I hope folks are sorting out which book or books they wish to read and discuss in our first theme read for 2016 (February - Theme read on any sea battle or campaign of WW2).

I am thinking that I will try and read this book:

The Battle Of The Atlantic How the Allies Won the War by Jonathan Dimbleby The Battle Of The Atlantic: How the Allies Won the War by Jonathan Dimbleby

I will send out a group e-mail once the thread has been set up and is ready for discussion.

Geevee | 3811 comments Thanks Rick.

message 610: by Bevan Lewis (new)

Bevan Lewis | 119 comments I know there are one or two interested in reading:
The German War A Nation Under Arms by Nicholas Stargardt The German War: A Nation Under Arms

If anyone would like to do a group read please reply. I'm thinking in March so as to avoid the scheduled group reads on here.

Cheers

Bevan

message 613: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (new)

Geevee | 3811 comments Hi Bevan, I would have loved to but my library reservation came in far earlier than expected so I have started reading. I'll be happy to read and join in the read though. It is certainly some 10% way in interesting, well written and researched.

message 614: by Bevan Lewis (new)

Bevan Lewis | 119 comments I can understand the temptation! Wonder if we should pace ourselves e.g. One part a week? I've done a read on another group that worked quite well.

message 615: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments Let me know how you go Bevan and if you want a thread set up in March.

message 616: by Bevan Lewis (new)

I thought Hornfischer's book excellent.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments Two great books by the sounds of it James! :)

message 621: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2281 comments ditto on Manray9's comment about "Last Stand". His other books are excellent also.

message 622: by Marc (new)

Marc | 1749 comments Ditto the ditto about "Last Stand" and the other books by Hornfischer. His work is outstanding and some of the very best I've ever read.

For the February group read, I'm going for "Pacific Payback" by Stephen L. Moore. I'm sure there are others here who have read this?

Any book or books covering any naval battle or campaign of WW2 that interests you, hope to see a few of you there :)

message 625: by Alex (new)

Alex Gosman | 203 comments I have just finished Germany at War. Took a while to grab my interest but the personal perspectives of soldiers writing to their families fascinating and sobering as so many of the authors "disappeared" on the eastern front never to be heard from again. Does highlight racial nature of regime and likely widespread knowledge of the holecaust and massacres in Russia with general populace. Interesting how many Germans attributed bombing to revenge for persecution of Jews.

The sections dealing with collapse of Germany in 1945 eye opening as well as reaction of Germans after surrender.

message 626: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments I thought it was a pretty good book as well Alex, gave a bit more of an insight into what the German populace knew at the time and a good look at how they perceived the world around them during the war.

message 627: by Geevee, Assisting Moderator British & Commonwealth Forces (new)

Geevee | 3811 comments I'm a quarter way through Alex and finding it good too.

message 628: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments Glad you are enjoying it as well Geevee, will be keen to hear your final thoughts on the book.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments A nice selection MR9 and on a subject not covered in much detail. It should make for interesting reading. I will look at reading one of my many books on RAF Bomber Command but that could change very quickly :)

It took me a couple years to find a good used copy at a reasonable price.

message 633: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

James Martin (albacore) | 49 comments I've been working on Whirlwind: The Air War Against Japan, 1942-1945 Whirlwind The Air War Against Japan, 1942-1945 by Barrett Tillman in preparation. I've got quite a few on the subject, and will try to get through The Kamikaze Hunters: Fighting for the Pacific, 1945 The Kamikaze Hunters Fighting for the Pacific, 1945 by Will Iredale , The Red Line The Red Line by John Nicol , and perhaps one other.

I read Whirlwind several years ago--really good book. Actually had a few bits of information I'd never heard, so that's always nice.

Marc | 1749 comments Firestorm Hamburg The Facts Surrounding the Destruction of a German City 1943 by Martin Middlebrook Firestorm Hamburg: The Facts Surrounding the Destruction of a German City 1943

This will be my April read. First saw it at a bookstore in Perth, Australia. Price was way too high, so I waited until I returned to the States to buy a copy. Loved his book on British paratroops at Arnhem, so I have high expectations for this one.

message 638: by 'Aussie Rick', Moderator (new)

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 19989 comments Some excellent books being selected for the April theme read, should be a lot of interesting accounts and discussions.

Marc, any book by Martin Middlebrook is usually a safe bet, I hope you enjoy the book. I am wondering if its a revised edition of this earlier title:

The Battle of Hamburg Allied Bomber Forces Against a German City in 1943 by Martin Middlebrook The Battle of Hamburg: Allied Bomber Forces Against a German City in 1943 by Martin Middlebrook

I thought his book on Dresden was both well-written and balanced, so I hope you'll find it a good read.

message 647: by Larry (new)

Larry Loftis How timely ... 75 years ago TODAY (give or take a day or two), British Lt. Commander Ian Fleming shadowed a playboy MI6 agent into Casino Estoril (Portugal). The agent was carrying an outlandish sum of money which he had just brilliantly stolen from the Germans, but which belonged to MI6. Fleming was keeping an eye on His Majesty's Secret Service funds, while watching a real spy in action.

The agent saddled up to a baccarat table where a wealthy but boorish man--who was fleeing the Nazis--was holding the bank.

Sound familiar? For details, you'll need to venture in INTO THE LION'S MOUTH ....
