Sounds great and I like the idea of a novel. OK for February - I'm thinking The Battle Of The Atlantic: How the Allies Won the War
Sea eh? Sounds like a job for the U.S Naval Institute Team with On Seas Contested: The Seven Great Navies Of The Second World War.
I hope folks are sorting out which book or books they wish to read and discuss in our first theme read for 2016 (February - Theme read on any sea battle or campaign of WW2).I am thinking that I will try and read this book:
The Battle Of The Atlantic: How the Allies Won the War by Jonathan DimblebyI will send out a group e-mail once the thread has been set up and is ready for discussion.

I know there are one or two interested in reading:
The German War: A Nation Under ArmsIf anyone would like to do a group read please reply. I'm thinking in March so as to avoid the scheduled group reads on here.
Cheers
Bevan

Hi Bevan, I would have loved to but my library reservation came in far earlier than expected so I have started reading. I'll be happy to read and join in the read though. It is certainly some 10% way in interesting, well written and researched.
I can understand the temptation! Wonder if we should pace ourselves e.g. One part a week? I've done a read on another group that worked quite well.
For February I've got:
The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors: The Extraordinary World War II Story of the U.S. Navy's Finest Hourand
Operation Storm: Japan's Top Secret Submarines and Its Plan to Change the Course of World War II

Ditto the ditto about "Last Stand" and the other books by Hornfischer. His work is outstanding and some of the very best I've ever read. For the February group read, I'm going for "Pacific Payback" by Stephen L. Moore. I'm sure there are others here who have read this?

The first group theme read for 2016 is now open:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Any book or books covering any naval battle or campaign of WW2 that interests you, hope to see a few of you there :)
I have just finished Germany at War. Took a while to grab my interest but the personal perspectives of soldiers writing to their families fascinating and sobering as so many of the authors "disappeared" on the eastern front never to be heard from again. Does highlight racial nature of regime and likely widespread knowledge of the holecaust and massacres in Russia with general populace. Interesting how many Germans attributed bombing to revenge for persecution of Jews. The sections dealing with collapse of Germany in 1945 eye opening as well as reaction of Germans after surrender.
I thought it was a pretty good book as well Alex, gave a bit more of an insight into what the German populace knew at the time and a good look at how they perceived the world around them during the war.

Here is the thread for the April theme read, I will open it up for comment a few days prior to 1st April:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
A nice selection MR9 and on a subject not covered in much detail. It should make for interesting reading. I will look at reading one of my many books on RAF Bomber Command but that could change very quickly :)

I've been working on Whirlwind: The Air War Against Japan, 1942-1945
in preparation. I've got quite a few on the subject, and will try to get through The Kamikaze Hunters: Fighting for the Pacific, 1945
, The Red Line
, and perhaps one other.

Firestorm Hamburg: The Facts Surrounding the Destruction of a German City 1943This will be my April read. First saw it at a bookstore in Perth, Australia. Price was way too high, so I waited until I returned to the States to buy a copy. Loved his book on British paratroops at Arnhem, so I have high expectations for this one.
Some excellent books being selected for the April theme read, should be a lot of interesting accounts and discussions.Marc, any book by Martin Middlebrook is usually a safe bet, I hope you enjoy the book. I am wondering if its a revised edition of this earlier title:
The Battle of Hamburg: Allied Bomber Forces Against a German City in 1943 by Martin Middlebrook

Not sure--I'll have to check when I get home and let you know.
Some of my late German night fighter friends were involved in this night raid, among many others. Interesting stories.

Began last night so will start contributing to the thread once I have a couple of chapters read.
The group's June theme read page is open and ready for discussion, the theme is any book or books of your choice that cover a WW2 land battle or campaign:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
I've opened the August theme read a little bit early in case some of the group are ready to go:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
How timely ... 75 years ago TODAY (give or take a day or two), British Lt. Commander Ian Fleming shadowed a playboy MI6 agent into Casino Estoril (Portugal). The agent was carrying an outlandish sum of money which he had just brilliantly stolen from the Germans, but which belonged to MI6. Fleming was keeping an eye on His Majesty's Secret Service funds, while watching a real spy in action. The agent saddled up to a baccarat table where a wealthy but boorish man--who was fleeing the Nazis--was holding the bank.
Sound familiar? For details, you'll need to venture in INTO THE LION'S MOUTH ....
