SOLVED. conspiracy about Achilles' shield [s]

I remember a ton about this, but not the title. There's a book set in (I think) 1947, which has to do with the discovery of some inscriptions on Crete revealing the existence of an unknown metal discovered by the ancient Greeks in a fallen meteor, the basis for the Homeric description of Achilles' shield. The heroes include a British WWII veteran now working with Zionist rebels in Palestine (until he's recruited to look for the metal), a Classicist who worked as a code-breaker during the war, and an American (or British?) secret agent type. It wasn't great literature, but it was fun (esp. if you're a Classics nerd, like me). Further remembered details include spoilers:

(view spoiler)[At some point, to find a clue, they have to decipher Linear B -- the classicist is having trouble doing this, and explains the difficulties to the others, one of whom says, "well, it's all Greek to me," inspiring an "aha" moment. (This was my favorite part.)
The secret-agent type betrays them towards the end, just after they find Achilles' shield.
