I just finished this novelette and really enjoyed it. Only problem is it's too short! At 70 pages I blew through it in two sittings :) That's not its fault I suppose, it was in fact advertised as a novelette!

For me the answer to that is unquestionably yes! Also, I don't think (for me anyway) that you can boil it down to that kind of a simple cost/benefit analysis, because the book's value is also comprised of things not so readily calculable.
In addition to the good background on Thomas, I actually rather enjoyed Bob's role in it all. He's perfectly willing to keep secrets from Harry so long as they're clearly in his best interest. Allowing Bob to gain insight into major long term immortal ingrigue is just icing on the cake :)
That's got me thinking - has Bob ever been shown to withhold info from Harry before in the books? (Not counting the time he was being wielded by the evil necromancers :)
If you wish to get value from your books, read them multiple times; or borrow them from a library. If you're feeling altruistic and don't horde your books (as I do) donate it to the Library when you are done with your copy. Value will be achieved from the multiple avid fans who will read the book.I'm glad Jim Butcher is filing in back story with books such as Backup and Welcome to the Jungle, but their briefness does leave me wanting the next full length Dresden book even more.
His is quite as prolific author, but I wish he would write faster!

I think short books could be written about many of the characters - Lea, any/all of the Faerie Queens, Murphy, Michael, Molly....Who would you like to see a "short" book on?
Eileen
I know this discussion is a year old, but I would love to see a short story on Murphy or Molly. Murphy is always cool, but Molly has changed a lot in the series and has become more important; I'd like a closer look at her.
