In NY it's called a heat wave if you get more than 3 days with temperatures over 90 degrees.
How cold are your winters?"

I love 90 degree weather!! :) 100's are nothing for us here in southern Oklahoma. But it still gets cold in the winter -- even if people have trouble believing that :P -- and most people say the cold, hard wind is the worst part of the winter.

message 277: by Deborah (new)

Deborah | 70 comments It gets cold in the winter, but a lot of the cold is brought in from the wind. It is so windy in KS!! But it is cold without wind, sometimes in the one digit numbers; with the wind, negative numbers. :P

Aerykah, I know, 90s are beautiful! Especially in the summer. :)

Cool beans! I love, absolutely Love, the hills. I've been to Kansas, and while it does have it's own type of pretty, with prairie land, I just have to have some hills around me!

Man I hate humidity-we only get real hot weather around the end of July, and August usually. But it's not too bad, unless it's waiting to rain. I think the central of the United States is just about perfect-four seasons, and no extreme temps. :)

We don't have much humidity here, it's mostly dry heat with lots of wind or none depending on the day. 80's & 90's with lots of sunshine & a breeze is my favorite weather!!

We do get snow, though not usually very much at a time. Ice storms are more normal for us. This has been a pretty mild winter overall, though.

As for 90's in winter... We don't get that, but it's nothing to have 70 degrees for a couple days then have it drop to or below freezing overnight. Hate it when that happens... :/

Okay, gals, if you're ever in the general Little Rock area you should PM me here and we can meet up at a coffeeshop and talk books, ;)

message 287: by Aerykah (new)

Aerykah | 2071 comments @Leah- Would it make you jealous to know that it's around 70 degrees here right now?
It hasn't been too awful bad during the day, but every night it drops well below freezing. The constant up & down of temperature is wreaking havoc on everyone's sinuses. As much as I hate cold weather, I wish it would just stay cold for a while until spring decides to make an appearance. :P

message 288: by Aerykah (new)

Aerykah | 2071 comments It's rather difficult sometimes. And extremely frustrating! Layers is the best way to go. Bundle up in the morning... remove layers as the day goes... then put the layers back on toward evening. I never pack away "seasonal" clothes. If I know it's going to be warm most of the day, I'll wear flip-flops and just deal with the cold. Today, it's a t-shirt & flip-flops with a light jacket to put on when the sun goes down -- I'll be home before it gets too cold.
Oh, I don't know... early trees start blooming late Feb. - early March?

This is seriously Alabama(maybe the South in general). The weather is incapable of being predicted as far as seasons go.

message 297: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments I lived in Kansas City for six years in the 90s. My Dad's parents lived in Colorado at that time. Basically, the higher altitude puts you closer to the sun, which gives higher highs in the daytime, especially up in the Rockies, which otherwise would be extremely cold...so there are bigger temperature swings.
I used to have a daffodil here that would nearly always bloom on January 31st. But this decade has been colder, and last year daffodils didn't come out until early March.
Here, we get some Arctic cold fronts, but they have to push against Gulf breezes. So, yesterday the high was 36, but today it was 65. It rarely stays below freezing for more than a week, and almost never gets below zero. But, since we're not on the plains, we don't get the heat extremes; it only hits 100 in Little Rock a few days a year, versus Dallas TX expecting 1-2 weeks total of days over 100. However, heat indices are similar because of the humidity difference. And there, the plains winds cool the area after dark, so you can still get exercise when the sun's not high. Some days in the south it gets so humid that your windows sweat like a cold glass of water...no fun.

message 299: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments So...on Saturday it was 68 and sunny. On Sunday it was 35 and cloudy and windy, and I spotted the first daffodil (about two weeks late). This morning we are having our first major winter weather event...one inch of sleet, after a layer of freezing rain, with a dusting of snow on top. Thought you Northerners would appreciate the variety of weather!
But I dare you hardened snow drivers to attempt our Southern blend! I got to work this morning (I have vehicle stability control) to find only four other people there and word that we'd be closed for the day. Nothing like driving on sleet...it slides with you.

message 300: by Aerykah (last edited Feb 16, 2015 09:39AM) (new)

Aerykah | 2071 comments Sounds very familiar, Hannah. Been there..... Praying y'all stay safe!
We had sunshine & 75 on Saturday and it even got up to about 65 Sunday afternoon, though it was cloudy & windy. Then within a few hours, the wind picked up & the temps dropped about 30 degrees. As we were leaving town to head home from church, the freezing rain/sleet started. They were predicting at least an hour or two of that followed by some snow. We didn't get hit very hard, but I don't know what it's like in town because we live south of town & we never get hit as hard out here. It is cold -- very windy & not supposed to get above freezing -- but really not too bad.
