This book provided a view from the inside of a city at war with itself. The idea of an apartment block across the street suddenly corking off is mind blowing, incongruous. That was Beirut. Another tragedy was Sarajevo. And this insanity just keeps on truckin' along, like it's just "oh, well." Who's running the show? Who's on first? However, just remember that none of us are getting out of this alive.
Freidman does an admirable job of balancing the veiwpoints- but this also might be the source of its length and pace. Try reading current events for a while, then go back to this book. You'll find a sense of discovery, as the events and attitudes in this work will suddenly make a TON of sense. Good luck!
