I am missing out if I don't read this book or even watch the movie adaption...will I be stunned for the lack of knowing about To Kill A Mockingbird? Will I have to go to an unknown island and live there all alone if I don't read it?!

Read it! If you have to choose one "high-school curriculum" book to read, read this one! You will not regret it!

I read it last year in english, and it was the ONLY novel read in class that I found dreadfully boring.

75% is about a 7-year old's life (boring)
15% is about a racist trial
10% is about Boo (boring)

I think that everyone should at the very least give this book a try. Harper Lee is an amazing author, and this is an equally amazing book. Nobody writes quite like her.

Not my favorite American novel, but I get it's appeal. Definitely one for the American canon.

I suppose you might watch the movie, because then you'll know what people are talking about. It's not a great book. It's a mediocre book that doesn't really challenge the reader. It's popular with white people, really. This article in the Wall Street journal did a fine job of summing up its shortcomings:

You shall be flogged and placed in the stocks for public ridicule, should you choose not to read TKAM.

Still my favourite book of ALL TIME. I probably have read it about 100 times, I love reading it in between really intense novels, and I seem to learn something new each time. My kids will be reading it in high school and I can't wait to find out what they get out of it.

You definitely have to read To Kill A Mockingbird and watch the movie. It is a must!!! If not pack your bags and book the next flight to your island. It's a great book and the movie is great is great as well. Friends of mine who aren't readers love this book. Just give it a try, I'm sure you will like it.

Read what you want to. At least you'll know the nature of your wants !

Some people read to evolve, expand, improve, arise... well, TKAMbird has done that to millions.

If I was going to be stranded on an island and could only take one book with me, I'd likely take this one. ;) You might find yourself slogging through the first few pages. Stick with it. It's amazing.

I would not shun you to an unknown island for not reading this book. I know I am in the minority, but once I had read this book, I honestly was left wondering what is the fuss all about. It's ok book, but I did not find it immensely fascinating or engrossing.

Katy It's an OK book, but it's not the greatest thing I've ever read. I don't know why people get so excited about it, either. ...more

You may not be shunned and sent to an Island...but you will be missing out. I think you should give it a go, obv it won't be for everyone, but i loved and think it is worth you giving it a try.

I read the book more than 25 years ago and I STILL remember names and other details about that story....it's powerful, moving, and possibly even life-changing.....WELL worth the read.

Yes...Its still one of my favorite books I will read for pleasure...quick and easy read too. Scout is what Bella for instance will never be; a strong, intelligent woman, and a multidimensional character...I love Scout :).

I wouldn't shun you and put you on A lonely island.... It wasn't my favorite book ever but I didn't hate it like my family did.... I had to read it for my English class...

Anna-
proceed directly to the unknown island of your choosing to read this amazingly well-told, engrossing classic. Enjoy!

It is an amazing book! There are classics that I HATE! This is not one of them.

Anna, did you read "To Kill a Mockingbird"?
