Silver If you are interested in starting a Buddy Read but do not know if anyone else would like to read along with you, you can use this thread to post the book you want to read and see if any one else expresses an interest in it.

Great idea!

message 3: by Lynnm (new)

Lynnm | 3025 comments Jenn, Janice and I are going to do a Buddy read on The Magic Ring - everyone is free to join us. We are just waiting for our books to arrive.

message 4: by Silver (new)

Silver If I have time I will probably join in.

Lynnm | 3025 comments Silver wrote: "If I have time I will probably join in."

That's wonderful! Hope that you have the time.

message 6: by Lynnm (new)

Lynnm | 3025 comments I received my copy of The Magic Ring and read the first chapter. Seems like it going to be good, although I will have to get used to the language a bit.

Jenn, Janice, anyone else that wants to read The Magic Read. Let us know here when you get your copy of the book.

And then we can decide things like how many chapters to read each week, when to start.

As for how many chapters to read each week, there are 79 chapters. I was thinking 8 chapters per week (the chapters are very short) for a total of 10 weeks. What do you think?

message 7: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 20 comments Still waiting on my copy but I'll let you know when I get it. I like that reading schedule. I read several books at the same time, so a slower paced schedule like this works best for me.

Great. We'll see what Janice has to say, but I like a slower reading schedule as well because I also read a number of books at a time.

Yes, this sounds good to me, as I also am reading way too many books at once, and I really want to enjoy this one. I haven't picked it up yet, but will start by this weekend.

message 10: by Lynnm (new)

Lynnm | 3025 comments Hi Silver - if you wouldn't mind setting up a thread for The Magic Ring buddy read, it would be appreciated. That way, when Jenn gets her copy, we will be good to go! :-)

message 11: by MadgeUK (new)

MadgeUK | 5213 comments Lynn - I think you need to PM Silver - she might not pick this request up here.

message 12: by Silver (new)

Silver No there is not, memebers are welcome to start there own threads here if they desire.

message 13: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 20 comments I got my copy today. When are we starting? Is there a schedule?

Janice (JG) Jenn wrote: "I got my copy today. When are we starting? Is there a schedule?"

Silver created a thread in Buddy Reads for The Magic Ring.

message 15: by Lynnm (new)

Lynnm | 3025 comments Hi Jenn - yes, look right above this thread, and you'll see the Buddy Read thread that Silver set up.

message 16: by Lynnm (new)

Lynnm | 3025 comments I am going to initiate this discussion even though I won't be reading or participating in the discussion. :-)

There was so much discussion about Don Juan in the thread for the next read, and there were I believe 8-9 people who voted for it.

Is anyone who voted for the poem willing to lead and/or participate in a buddy read on Don Juan?

It would be a shame to allow the interest for Don Juan to fade away.

MadgeUK | 5213 comments Good idea Lynn. There are several online versions of Don Juan if folks don't want to buy a copy. Here is a searchable text and some info about the poem:-

http://www.online-literature.com/byro...

http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AnS/english...

And some information about Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire, Byron's (haunted!) ancestral home and well known to me in my romantic girlhood:D:-

message 18: by MadgeUK (new)

MadgeUK | 5213 comments I see there have been no takers for a Buddy read of Don Juan and I can't say that I am surprised considering the dormant nature of our Poetry threads since RR began:(

I've read drabbles and bits of "Don Juan" over the past few years, and I think I'd have to hurl myself from the cliff if I had to read the whole damn thing. Frankly, I can only take Byron in measured doses. There's waaaay too many Cantos for me to slog though from start to finish... ;-)

message 20: by Silver (new)

Silver I would not mind reading Don Juan, but I am not sure I will be able to lead a discussion of it.

message 21: by MadgeUK (last edited Apr 13, 2012 01:14PM) (new)

MadgeUK | 5213 comments Fair enough Bunwat.

Do we necessarily need a leader Silver? It could bowl along under reader's steam with help from background stuff, which is what most of our reads do anyway, with gentle nudges (and the occasional slap on wrist) from you from time to time:)

Silver MadgeUK wrote: "OK Bunwat.

That is true, if enough people express an interest in reading it, I could just set up the threads for it and it carry on its own accord.

message 23: by MadgeUK (new)

MadgeUK | 5213 comments Chris: I somehow don't think you are influenced by the fact that Byron was a handsome charmer who wowed the women?:D His life is laid out in those cantos and the ladies loved him for it:).

message 24: by Linda2 (new)

Linda2 | 3749 comments ..and wowed men too. He was an equal opportunity lover.

message 25: by Lynnm (new)

Lynnm | 3025 comments I am obsessed...obsessed!...with the new Sherlock series on BBC. So, I thought I would read the four novels.

Anyone interested in reading them as well? Note that I can't start until after I finish The Magic Ring.

message 26: by Doug (new)

Doug | 4 comments I am reliving my childhood, and am up to freshman English at Brooklyn College.

I'm starting out by reading "Jude the Obscure" by Thomas Hardy. Anyone want to join me?

I wouldn't mind joining you, Doug. For me it will be re-living first year (or was it second year?) English at the University of NSW. I'll listen to it on audiobook and can start early next week, if that suits you.

message 28: by Doug (new)

Doug | 4 comments Sure, that's fine, I've already started but I'm plodding along so you'll catch up to me pretty quickly.

Let me know how you're doing.

message 29: by Doug (new)

Doug | 4 comments Also, I'm really new to Goodreads and Buddy Reads, but do you think that should I create a new topic for "Jude the Obscure"?

message 30: by MadgeUK (last edited Sep 02, 2012 02:45AM) (new)

MadgeUK | 5213 comments We read Jude the Obscure as a group last April Doug so you might like to tap into that discussion and continue it:-

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

Or, as you suggest, create a new thread for it under Buddy Reads.

message 31: by Doug (new)

Doug | 4 comments Thanks, sorry I missed the read last year. I think we may start up a new thread, but I'll wait to hear from Kim and anyone else who wants to join in.

message 32: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimmr) | 317 comments I'll be starting tomorrow. I really don't mind whether we start a new thread, add to the old one or just discuss the books in the comments to each other's review thread. You choose, Doug.

I'd go ahead and throw your idea out there and see if anyone is interested. Worse that can happen is you don't get any takers!

Evil (evilqueen22) yup :D Thanks!

Are you still interested in reading the four SH novels? I'm with you in obsession and have been working my way thru the SH books on my own. I only saw the TV series this summer.

Renee M | 803 comments I'm not ready to leave the Forsytes!! Anyone out there interested in finishing the series?

message 39: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Kennedy (laurenxo) Would anyone like to buddy read David Copperfield with me?

Everyman | 3574 comments Christopher wrote: "I've read drabbles and bits of "Don Juan" over the past few years, and I think I'd have to hurl myself from the cliff if I had to read the whole damn thing."

I wouldn't go that far, but I agree that small doses of Byron are sufficient. But if Cranford is to be believed, Don Juan is more a woman's read than a man's.

message 41: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 3574 comments MadgeUK wrote: "I think a buddy read might 'dilute' the number of readers available for The Children's Book, Agnes Grey and Faust and...."

Too many buddy reads probably would. Maybe Chris and Silver should limit them to a few at a time so as not to draw too many members away from the primary books that have won a poll.

Cindy We talked about Buddy reading The Mysteries of Udolpho. I am having trouble finding a good copy. The free version at Amazon has the poetry and whole sections of paragraphs deleted.

Both Amazon and eBay have paperback copies

Cindy I stay close to my E-reader because of the built in dictionary. I will check out the paperback editions.

Renee M | 803 comments I'm thinking about opening a buddyread for Mysteries of Udolpho. I think I'll do it in 4 threads. One for each volume that the book is divided into. It sounds like Cindy is interested. Anyone else?

message 49: by Silver (new)

Silver I have been wanting to read that one for a while. I will try and join in if I can fit the book in.
