I am going to start reading The Mysteries of Udolpho. It is the longest book I have read so might need a little encouragement to get through it.

You can do it Condy. It's been years since I read it, but I really enjoyed it.

Anyone else?"I may follow the discussion to refresh my memory, but I have to many other things on deck to spend the time on a second reading of it. Hope you find others interested; it was a fun read, though I thought a bit longer than it needed to be.
This is kinda short notice :Sept 19 is International Talk like a Pirate day:
http://talklikeapirate.com/wordpress/
If some one is interested is a period allowed Piratical read, lemme know
Treasure Island is a tad too obvious
any takers for:
The Pirate?
Oh, I highly recommend The Pirate! I don't have time to re-read it right now, but it was one of my favorites by Scott. I think it was because of the unusual setting.

I want to do as many of the Waverly books as I can. All I know of Scott is Ivanhoe and that does not seem enough, I feel the same about Sabatini, hence the Sea Hawk.

I'd be interested in The Pirate with the caveat that we go at a relatively slow pace, no more than about 50 pages a week.

I think we have a deal. My hesitation is that at 50 pages a week this could go to Talk Like a Pirate Day 2018.
OTOH I have more than enough concurrent reading to keep me busy such that Pirate on slo read could work.
How soon would you want to start? This is my first buddy read on Goodreads, any help/advice on how we can best coordinate will be appreciated.
For example , do we create a buddy read discussion within this group? If you care to take the administrative lead, I will follow, but while you do explain it to me as you would a child and maybe I'll be able to run the next one.
How about we wait to the end of the week to see if anyone else wants to join us. I'll make a read schedule, but sure everyone who wants to participate has a copy and we'll dive in. I'll happily set up the discussions.

I don't have time to re-read, but I'll probably join in the discussions from time to time.

Excellent, I look forward to your participation.

Awesome, welcome. You're ahead of me, I've not read anything by Scott. Ya'll need to be gentle with me!

Renee wrote: "I'm not ready to leave the Forsytes!! Anyone out there interested in finishing the series?"Hi Renee! I don’t know how much of the three Forsyte novels you’ve read- I own The Forsyte Saga and would love to read with a few people. Did the group start a BR? I nominated it in my classic group for the quarterly book, but I was told it does not qualify because it is three books, not one. Anyone, has this group done one on the above book? Thanks!!!
Hi, Candace. This group read the Forsyth Saga several years ago (around 2012, I think). It was terrific and definitely worth the time. There are 3 books, but you'll find they go together. Beyond those 3 there is an entire series following the family over 2-3 generations (With a few novellas in between), which I hope to continue with someday.
Hope that helps. :)
The Dubliners is too late for our time period, Mark Andre. We read books that were published until 1910, so the book is outside our focus area. We ended the time period at 1910 to coincide with the death of Edward VII, which was the end of an era.

Rosemarie wrote: "No need to apologize. 😺 I know you like James Joyce. 😉"Cool. Actually, Grant Richards of London agreed to publish Dubliners as early as 1905, but the printer thought that there were certain objectionable passages, and when Richards asked Joyce to make changes the author refused. This nonsense continued for nine years, when the book, basically unchanged, finally came out in 1914. At one point the book was printed in Ireland but never bound and then ultimately the sheets were destroyed. - )
I have a book in mind for a buddy read. It is dated 1911 and the Author is rated as Edwardian rather than Victorian. I'll not name the book w/o a prior ruling that asking for buddies here, given the slight infringement on the year is within the rules.

Since it’s a buddy read and close to our time period, the mods have approved this.

The book I have in mind is Zuleika Dobson, or, an Oxford Love Story, the only novel by Max Beerbohm, date 1911My Copy is on order and to be open, I already have a few people waiting in another group. I am open to inviting folks there or running a parallel thread here. Again I am unsure of the rules, but nothing is started yet.
That novel is on my ‘to read’ list. I’d have to check for availability but if I can find it, I’d like to join the buddy read.
Great choice-we actually read Zuleika Dobson in 2015 and I really enjoyed it. If you find one or more "buddies" to join you in the read here we're happy to open a thread for you whenever you'd like to start.
I'd never heard of this book, but it looks interesting. At this point I don't think I'll be able to join, but I might change my mind when the thread goes up if I can "get ahead" in the other books I have going.
I now have my copy in hand and hope to be up to Chapt 4 by Friday next week. The delay is in case others are interested but do not have a copy . Another read is starting in another group. What is the protocol? I can mange two. Is that allowed/ encouraged?
I will set up a thread for you to start chatting-if at some point you want subheadings just DM me and I can do that as well.
