The author, Mike Mullin, has done excellent research on the supervolcano we all know and love as Yellowstone. He has also done research on what a 15 year old boy would be doing, and he's pretty much spot on. There's a couple of elements that would make a World of Warcraft player smile.
The characters all feel thought out, and you really do start to care about them, including the few throw-away characters you get to meet. Character building has a proper pace in the first half of the book, which is mostly replaced in the second half by relationship building between the characters.
This is not a book for you if you're looking for nonstop action. The action in this book is short and brutal, and takes the passanger seat while the thoughts of a scared kid who's looking for his family in a disaster area that's completely unprecedented in recent history.
The event in this book can and will happen. The eruption of Yellowstone happens roughly every 600 000 years, and it's been roughly 600 000 years since the last eruption. The eruption will devastate half of Northern America, and will half the world in ash.
