The Devil's Arithmetic Book Club: Chapters 12-13

Explain the following passage from the end of Chapter 13:
Gitl touched her hand. “Chaya,” she whispered back, so fiercely, it sounded like a promise. Or a command.

I think that Gitl was shocked, because of everyone being so controlled. (I easily could have read it wrong.) Especially because Tziporra or Tzippotoraa: either one, but I believe she died, or she's really scared. But if she died,then that explains a lot with Fayge saying the Yitchaz would be so disappointed.

[Josh]

I think that when she whispered to her, I felt like she was trying to communicate with her, to make a plan or somewhat. But since the lady in the blue dress was there they couldn't make that much contact with each other. The reason why I think it might be an idea because of how detailed the sentence is worded "Chaya, she whispered back, so fiercly, it sound like a promise. Or a command."

I think that Gitl was commanding because she was just trying to make her not so scared because she was saying how to be brave and not so scared. She probably just wanted this person to just get through this on her own in case something bad happened to her.

I think that she was trying to tell Chaya that we are going to die because Gitl touched her hand and the word "Chaya" means life. She is trying to tell Chaya that we are going to die but she is not saying that we are going to die. She wants to tell her in a different way instead of saying "We are going to die". Gitl doesn't want Chaya to be upset and worried about things so that is why she just said "Chaya". Chaya is loosing her memories because they shaved her head so she doesn't know whats going to happen next. She doesn't know that they are going to die soon.

I think She was saying in a mature way that we're gonna die. "Girl touched her hand." But I think they're gonna die. She saying we're going to die in a nice way to Gitli have a heads up of what the Nazis are going to do to us. But I think it was a Command. Why? Because Is something you know is going to happen to you and you're going to find out sooner or later. A Promise is just like saying i will buy you a new dog but you never know you can lie. A command is a direct point on something like I'm Going TO buy you a new dog. So I think they're trying to say is a command that they're going to die.

She was telling Chaya that we were going to die in a different way so she doesn't upset her too much. So she just doesn't want Chaya to find out what the nazis will do to her. But in the end I think they will all die but Hannah will awake from her "dream"

I think she was just telling chya that she's going to die i dont think she wants to tell her though. It's a really sad story. But i know she doesn't want to upset her about this so that's why she's trying to say this in a mature way. And she just wanted to give her a headsup that the nazi's were going to kill us.

i think that she was telling chya that she is gona die soon. she wasnt trying to be harsh a about it. so she was trying to say it in the nices way that she could. its sounds like there not sure about it because they were so inforcing about it, but they know that it was an comand from the Nazis.

Yhey told Chya that we are going to die but she said it to her in a nice way that she coulndt make her to upstet. Gitil dosent want to worrie chya about them dieing but Gitl is trying to be strong her self to show a good idea.
