Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments If you are new to the group and really don't know how to start, try this.....

1. Go and introduce yourself here (optional)

2. Click Unread on the homepage. You will find this to the right of 'Discussion Board' in grey.

3. Roll all the way to the bottom of the page and click 'Mark all as Read'

4. You will now probably have an empty page. Now click refresh on your browser and watch the live discussions start building.

5. Whenever you return to the group click on Unread to see what has been going on.

Of course you will miss all the old discussions this way but as you get more confident in the group you can go and meander around the cobwebbed threads!

If you get stuck just ask!

EDIT : The underlined words do what they say they do now, so just click away (watch out the 'mark all as Read' link will do what it says if you click it - no going back).

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Once I found the unread posts page I bookmarked it and I always go straight to that instead of the home page.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments As do I, GL.

I have to remind myself to peek at the home page every so often to make sure Simon hasn't done anything silly.

I'd also like to mention that it's very simple to change how you get or turn off all notifications through your profile page. Just click on your name to access your profile.

Maureen (Mews) (mews) | 711 comments I found a couple of video tutorials for Goodreads completely by accident when I was messing around on youtube earlier. Thought they could maybe be helpful for some of our newer members.

Patti, Simon, please feel free to move these links somewhere else if there is a different thread where they would be more appropriate. ;-)

Mark Chisnell (markchisnell) | 55 comments Oh boy, is that unread button a game changer - I no longer feel completely overwhelmed, now I just need something to read...

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yay!

message 8: by Michael (new)

Michael Pugh (projectsofpugh) Thanks for posting this, this will make it so much easier (and less daunting) to keep up with active conversations. Jenny :)

message 9: by Peta (new)

Peta Gentry | 21 comments Is there any way to introduce myself anymore - both threads appear to have been closed....? I'm new here and really in need of friends (don't want to seem too desperate, but I am...) as you would see once I introduced myself...
Hello, in any case - really happy to be here.

Michael Cargill (michaelcargill) | 2992 comments Hello, Peta!

You can introduce yourself in the "Morning!" thread here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I read your blog entry about having to remain anonymous... that's one harsh workplace to be in if they'd lose respect for anyone who decided to do some writing.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hiya Peta!

We love introductions anywhere and everywhere! Welcome!

Shout out if you need a hand finding your way.

Just be careful of that Micheal bloke. He posts random cat gifs.

Peta Gentry | 21 comments Thanks for the welcome! Michael, the workplace isn't harsh - it's just very straight-laced, and there's not much sense of humour swishing around. I'm being a bit harsh myself. Most of my colleagues would probably think it great fun. But..but..but.. it's also a VERY competitive environment. Mostly this is quite good-humoured and fair. Sometimes it isn't... I ain't takin' no chances.... And, once again, there lies the problem: I have no friends to help me out. (said with transparent, pathetic, sad sincerity...)

Clodagh Phelan (goodreadscomclodagh_phelan) | 37 comments Hi everyone,
Only just getting to grips with Goodreads now I've conquered Kindle and published.
Have just found this on YouTube (via the suggestions/links made by Maureen, above). It's Goodreads author Johanna Penn with Patrick Brown of Goodreads
Here's the link - it's quite long but worth watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXZ1J...
I have one question for the group. If no appropriate, please let me know. I am very excited to have published at last. Would love to let my GR friends know but don't know how to do that without breaking all sorts of rules. Or maybe it's OK. Can anyone enlighten me or point me to a forum where I can do this or at least find answers. Thanks

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Look through the group and anywhere it says 'please read before posting' ...read it.

message 15: by Stuart (new)

Stuart Aken (stuartaken) | 2 comments Thanks for this page. I've been on Goodreads for a while but never fully understood the way groups work. This is a really helpful page. And the Youtube video mentioned by Clodagh above is a worthwhile watch, too.
Thanks again.

Jim | 21809 comments In the good old days fly by spammers used to at least scroll down the page to find a thread that was vaguely appropriate :-(

Alicia Ehrhardt (aliciabutcherehrhardt) | 4836 comments Apparently, when I joined, I missed this. So I've had to flop about on my own. It worked out all right.

You're sweet, Rosemary. This is one of the few Goodreads groups I still belong to. Kind of quirky in a nice way.
