SOLVED. Children's book about magic [s]

Sometime between 1992 and 1998, I read a children's book about a boy who could do magic. It was short, illustrated, and all I really remember about it is that it involved the color green, a house, a book of magic, and possibly a tree or an apple...

Any ideas what this book was?

Could be a long shot but could it be "anton can do magic" by Ole Konnecke?

Was this a chapter book? How short is "short?"

It was probably less than 50 pages, maybe less than 25. There might have been chapters, but I doubt it.

"Anton Can Do Magic" looked promising, but from reading the plot descriptions, I'm not sure it's right. I seem to remember that the boy in the book had a spellbook of some kind, a tome.

Louis, if that's not the book, can you decribe the illustrations - cartoony vs. realistic, hand drawn, watercolour/painted, bright/dark/muted colours, funny vs. serious, etc.?
