There was a book I read a while ago, and I really want to find it again. I don't remember much of it, but I do remember that it was a bout a kid (I think a boy) who went to a special private school, and if I remember correctly there was a painting of the founder of the school that played some role in the book. I remember that the kid would assign colors to numbers on the corner of their desk, and that the teacher would put little messages back on the same corner (I think). The only color-number pair I remember was that four was blue. Also I think five was red, but I'm not sure about that. I would really like to know what book this is, so thank you for any help!

This sounds so familiar, and I want to know what book it is.
There is a book, An Abundance of Katherines that has a character trying to figure out the calculus of relationships. I think color somehow figured into it. However, I don't think this is your book.

A question, was it just a game they did, assigning colors to numbers on the desk, or did the kid have synthesia, a medical condition where your sense perceptions are altered and your numbers have colors or shapes?

Perhaps you are thinking of A Mango-Shaped Space? The main character is a girl though.

I know you already said it wasn't A Mango-Shaped Space, but I just wanted to say that it's a really great book!
This isn't the main point of the book, but there is a huge part of it in it...The Name of this Book Is Secret.
Could it be either one of these?Blue Like Friday
Mondays Are Red
These are the only titles a search for "synesthesia" in my library catalog turned up other than the already suggested "The Name of this Book is Secret" and "Mango-Shaped Space."
This reminds me of a nonfiction book that I heard about. I'll have to write my own unsolved post for it. Thanks for reminding me! The one I'm thinking about was written about an autistic young man who solved math problems with the colors in his head.
I haven't read this in forever so I have no idea if it's a great suggestion but the picture on the wall and general behaviour put me in mind of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, it's about an autistic boy- anyone read it recently can confirm any of this?https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
