CHAOS THEORY
"How the hell did we come to where the President of the United States has two minutes to decide whether he will nuke Boston or kill the world instead?"
An extremely powerful novel of the biowar apocalypse,
THE MEYERSCO HELIX
traces the frighteningly plausible accidents by which the casual killing of a near-extinct mole escalates inexorably towards where an anguished **President’s** must choose either to let a self-propagating bio-war substance kill the world’s population — or to destroy a major American city by nuclear blast.
_____
Also, I often see "towards" used where, in my region of the U.S., the word "toward" is used.

Thanks, Sierra. Tried to fix it but it looks like the system won't allow you to change anything on a book that's free under Select presumably because the 70% royalty rate fights the presently $0.00 price... Will fix it afterwards.

Thanks for tweeting. I would be extremely grateful if you would tweet once on each of the days the book is free through Saturday.
DOWNLOADS in the first 12 hours from c10am to c10pm my local time averaged just over 100 per hour. That's 2am to 2pm Californian time, with the day going-going-gone into the Pacific Ocean, so it isn't surprising that in the last hour the rate has picked up to 300 units per hour without me doing anything at all -- people in the States, where the novel is set, are awake.
This is clearly a better test than the one at Christmas that Amazon screwed up. Let's hope they don't screw up the end of this one.
One anomaly so far: 131 downloads in the UK strikes me as low when you consider that Andrew had an annual big bestseller and several extremely controversial novels there for a decade or a dozen years. The UK has approximately one fifth the population of the USA.

Hardly sales when he's giving it away, or his publisher is, anyway. Your alternative of "downloads" is probably the more realistic word.
Thanks for the promise of tweeting again.

We're running the freebie for three days, or four if Amazon doesn't screw up the day they promised to give back for their earlier foulup. I want to see if there is a natural limit, reached on (I suspect) the second day, after which downloads fall off.

Edit: I meant 1,650 ... not 16500. A bit of a difference there. Sorry.
I'd expect anything by Andrew to do better than anything by you, Sierra. First of all, he has a big established rep, with a whole row of bestsellers, albeit back in the 80s. Secondly, he was in the vanguard of a style of violence and sex. The NYT called his ATROCITY WEEK "a landmark in the literature of violence". Third, he was controversial and celebrated in literary circles at the time. Fourth, it probably matters that he wasn't a me-too writer; he was one of the very few quality writers who crossed the barrier to airport sales, and not many of those had any originality, so he stood out. Don't know which of these things matter most, but they all do to a certain extent. The amazing thing is the persistence of name recognition. Since CoolMain reissued THE MEYERSCO HELIX we have received about half a dozen letters from old fans asking after an Andrew McCoy book HarperCollins announced prematurely just when Andrew lost interest in writing *a quarter century ago*, so he's remembered.
If you want to see a surprising turn of speed, look at Dakota's downloads for LE MANS at http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8... -- she's a brand new writer, with one book, no track record, and already at half the downloads of Andrew's book, or near enough twice your downloads for six books. That's amazing to me.
I too have noticed a big falloff in download rate after the first day.

I did no promotion other than sending out a tweet for each title to those who follow me -- in other words, not to potential buyers, but mostly to fellow authors. That's just an announcement, not marketing.
Thanks. Kat, are you surprised by this falloff in downloads after the first day?
Last time Amazon screwed up my experiment, so there was only really less than a day, not enough time to conclude anything. But I noted that everyone else reported a buildup over a few days, and Sierra in particular was keen on five days. Now it looks to me, as I must admit I always thought, like anything longer than two days is a waste.

I never got the same results after the first time. Let's Do Lunch - a giveaway total of 7123 over 5 days.
I'm using 2 days to launch 'Badlands' which looks like it's going to work out. It's #76 in short stories as of 1 pm EDT.
But KOLL never really helped with 'Swallow the Moon' for some reason, the book didn't hit.

Ugh. I thought I did, Joo. Sorry. I must have become distracted. I just checked and KUF is definitely on my list.

Unbelievably, Amazon have screwed Andrew again. After the last debacle they promised to restore a free day for much more than a a single free day that he lost. I wrote to them to ask them to make that day today, and promoted THE MEYERSCO HELIX as free today. But Amazon restored the book to full price at midnight yesterday.
I give up on Amazon and Select. They're unreliable. Since the only reason for going into Select is the free days, if you can't count on those, Select is worthless unless you want to price your book high enough to make it worthwhile borrowing instead of buying it.

Because Amazon screwed Andrew again, the test of THE MEYERSCO HELIX on the Select FREE program was limited to three days instead of the four scheduled.

Sad that "Amazon screwed Andrew again", but I can't resist saying that at half Andrew's numbers, Ferry was opening champagne before I was fully through the door yesterday evening, back from Slovakia just in time to get tipsy before dinner. Maybe there's a time to stop wanting more, to take stock and count your blessings.
Congratulations to Andrew and Andrew and the army of helpers I saw on Twitter on a job supremely well done.

Amazon finally got back to me last week and offered a free day to compensate for messing up mine earlier in the month, I replied with a preferred date, but it's come and gone. I'm sure eventually they will rectify things. All is well, though, I had no time nor facility for promotion or even comparison study...

What a saga. Amazon screwed up the original Christmas FREE days in the Select program totally. Between two books for Dakota Franklin and Andrew McCoy, CoolMain Press lost about 2.5 days out of six. Amazon offered one (1) free day in recompense, which was assigned to Andrew's book. The confirmed FREE day was widely advertised — and then just didn't happen. I had egg all over my face, just like Sharon, except a lot more of it. I then asked if the FREE day could be the next day, as it would be the last day the book was in the Select program, in which it had been put only for the free days. Amazon, as far as I can make out, didn't even try. Long, long afterwards I heard from them the by now routine apologies and the offer to try again to give us the FREE day. Suppressing the temptation to tell them to go do something to themselves with a hot stone for wasting such an inordinate amount of my time, I graciously set a new date.
Of course I didn't advertise anything. There was no point in trusting people with such wretched track record. Turned out I was right not to trust them.
An hour after the announced time nothing had happened. I wrote to Amazon. 2h40m late they made the book FREE in the US only. It's now four and a half hours too late, and still, despite me writing to them, Amazon have not made the book FREE in the UK. I can't be bothered to write to them again.
Of course, without any advance promotion, the FREE day is worthless, but I just wanted to see how long Amazon would drag out this clear assumption on their part that my time is free, that I have nothing better to do than sit here and wait for them, eventually, some years past due, to do something right.
Please tweet the fact that the book is free around a bit, so that at least we can say we did our part.
This is like trying to work with one of those African bureaucracies where you had better bring a hammock and a cool chest with food, and a steward to fetch you cold drinks, because you'll be in the queue a week before you find someone who'll even try to read your cheque — upside down.
It would be a comedy if it weren't such a wretchedly unnecessary waste of my time.

Another thing that affects downloads, IMHO, is the speed with which the free listing sites load the covers. If you happen to be down the page a ways and the seeker is scrolling fast, your book can be lost entirely because it hasn't yet loaded.

Eventually, I am sure, my own Amazon Select saga will come to a conclusion, but I have still to hear from them - for, to paraphrase Andre, the fourth (or is it the fifth) try at getting it a third right.
And I tend to agree with Patricia. I'm uncertain whether promoting FREE books on the FREE BOOKS sites will find the right audience.
