You're a brick, Kat.

Dakota's also been tweeting Andrew's book. I've noticed that every time a pretty girl tweets his book, there's a sort of peak in the downloads... Heh-heh. Of course, it might be the motorbike or the crash helmet.

DOWNLOADS of LE MANS a novel after about two and a half days:

US 3170
UK 116
DE 1
FR 4
ES 1

So, after the first day we had over 2/3 the downloads we would eventually achieve (unless there's a late spurt in the remaining ten hours to midnight in California). The second day is still worth having for around a quarter of the downloads achievable but a third day is wasted. I'll tweet some more, but don't expect a huge return (as on the first day) for the effort.

My target was an apparently ambitious 3000 copies of LE MANS. In that sense the experiment is already a success. I am however deeply disappointed with the British and French response to a good book about a race they think they own.

On the flipside of the coin, this strong interest in the States in a rather upmarket fragment of motor racing brings us the cheerful news that Dakota will be a powerful player once we launch her American-set books, and especially her NASCAR book, and several other books with American racing series backgrounds.

By golly, I didn't make a mistake when I picked Dakota!

If you don't have a copy yet, grab one at Amazon:

ROBUSTERs with proven taste recommend it. I do too, but I would, Dakota is my protege and I have 16 years invested in her.

Dakota Franklin (dakotafranklin) | 306 comments You're all such super huggables! I just love it that so many people are helping promote my book, and that so many want to download it. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I really look forward to your review, Jeremy.

I think those numbers are hot, hot, hot, heading for five times as many downloads at the end of three days as in the first abortive free trial last Christmas. They're halfway to the established writer Andrew McCoy's numbers, so I shan't quibble about the US/UK split, though of course Andre knows what he's talking about. (Of the quarter-million fans who attend the 24 Hours of Le Mans every year, a disproportionate 50K are British.)

You certainly didn't Andre. Dakota, keep that in mind when he gets too uppity. He'll be riding on your coattails, not the other way around...

BTW, I read on some other thread that you were looking for the thread that mentioned how we're all waiting with bated breath for the next book in the installment. Happened to run across it just now: http://bit.ly/FRYUIN

Also, there's a search bar on the right side of all the threads where you can put in key words when looking for a particular post.

In those non-anglo markets I don't think they freeze so much as that the market is pretty small for English books in each genre.

Bernie Ecclestone paid me to hold up her next book because he feared it would cut into the ticket sales and television viewership for the Grand Prix.

I'll decide by tomorrow or the day after which of Dakota's books is next, and we can start work.

J.A. Beard (jabeard) Question: Does the level of sexism that Mallory had to deal with her in her background (e.g., being an MIT graduate with good grades but not being able to land a decent job) reflective of the past state of auto racing or is it still that bad?

message 28: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Tillotson (storytellerauthor) | 1802 comments That is a very good question, Jeremy. I'd like to know the answer to that as well...

message 29: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Jordan (kajordan) | 3042 comments My experience differes from Mallory's - It was much worse for me.

I've been told to 'go home, have babies and leave work for (smarter) men.'

Slap downs like that made me want to go postal. But some have been even scarier.

message 30: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (patriciasierra) | 2388 comments This is embarrassing. Shortly after I married, I applied for a job. When the boss told me what he'd pay me, I insisted he pay me less because I didn't want to earn more than my husband did. The boss praised me for being so protective of my hubby's feelings. It was a different era. We hadn't yet "come a long way, Baby."

Dakota Franklin (dakotafranklin) | 306 comments Familiar story. I've been running our European operations for fifteen years, and old engineers still ask me when my father is coming by. Implication: that he checks my work...

When I was an undergraduate, shouts of, "Take it off, shows us your tits," were heard at the beginning of every year. One year I stopped, looked the shouter in the eye, and said, "Yours are bigger, fat boy. I'll take off my shirt if you'll first take off yours." Nobody laughed at my joke.

College placement offices, to this day, try to direct "lady engineers" (I swear that's what the man called me) to materials surveying, a class of engineering accounting for which real engineers have nothing but contempt. Gave me a wonderful scene in one of the books, though, Triple Threat Thrill.

The top racing teams would love to have a woman driver, if she's fast enough. That's just good business now that half the TV audience for racing is women. But at the engineering end they are not so welcoming. I sat in on an employment interview a couple of years ago, talking to a woman who took a turn on a NASCAR team. When she was asked about it, she said, "Women are lucky the rednecks let them do PR and prostitution." She was so frustrated by not being able to get a hearing, and being shoved to the front every time a camera turned up, she essentially worked as a mechanic just to get some experience, any experience.

Things are changing, though. In touring cars, for instance, women are now a force in the team management.

Claudine | 1110 comments Mod
That's good to know. I worked in sales (mostly liason between production and sales reps / clients) for many years. Even in that environment women were regarded as either mothers or sluts. No middle ground. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth everytime. I hated being asked to play mother for instance every time we were in a conference room just because I was the only female present.

message 34: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Tillotson (storytellerauthor) | 1802 comments Good, but disturbing...

I never felt the kind of sexism for which the Feminist movement was mounted. But that is probably because until recently I lived in smaller towns with a strong sense of community. Not saying it didn't exist, just that it was never directed at me. I got my start in business as my first dh's accountant in the small business he ran. I didn't mind, I am good with numbers and he wasn't, and it meant I was able to stay home with the kids until they were well along in school. And I learned a lot. Then I became a realtor and essentially was in business for myself when our marriage failed. I partnered with my 2nd dh in several businesses, as disparate as an exhaust shop, a drive-through oil change and car wash business (which I instigated and had a big hand in designing) and a Hallmark card and gift shop. In all of those I was the President and always the bag man, which I was good at. My name was always first on the title. A dozen years or so ago, I ran for office at our golf & country club and (so I was told - with glee - by more than one man) got the most votes for director. I was one of the first women to be elected to the post. I suppose some would take that as sexist but I just shrugged. Most women I knew wouldn't have wanted it. The secretary is appointed from the directors and I was prepared to be asked and already knew how to say no, I'd done so with many women's organizations. I'm a better president or director at large. But I was not asked. I was appointed to sit on the committee to hire a new Golf Pro.

There are two more factors at play for me. First, I'm quite small and I don't have tits. Second, I've never worked in a large Corporate environment and would never want to - it's not in my nature. I probably would have been crushed.

Still, I joined the Feminist movement, such as it was in Canada and if you want to rile me, tell me a story such as the ones above. The true and ultimate hill I would be prepared to die on is against atrocities (large and small) that are carried out against women, and by extension, children...

message 35: by Dakota (new)

Dakota Franklin (dakotafranklin) | 306 comments It's petty stuff, Sharon. The thing is to rise above it and leave it behind, otherwise it will consume one's life.

Doesn't sound to me like anyone discriminated against you for too long once they met you!

Almost home. I'll have a couple of hours with my family. Ciao.

message 36: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Jordan (kajordan) | 3042 comments What I see (now I'm too old to be harrassed) that really tees me off is older gay men harrassing younger straight men.

There is a certain karmic justice to it - but it still pisses me off.

Women in IT are simply ignored when it comes to raises and promotions. It's like we don't exist.

message 37: by Claudine (new)

Claudine | 1110 comments Mod
It's the same here Kat. My husband is an IT manager for the Africa and China division of a global furniture company. There are no women in any of their global IT offices apart from secretaries.

message 38: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Jordan (kajordan) | 3042 comments It's a shame.

I love working IT - even customer support. It's like being handed a fresh puzzle every call. I enjoyed getting help from others to solve problems. We got to talk in Geek Speak - and I got to translate it for the Customer.

What I'm doing now it interesting in a Geek way. Just not so fun.

message 39: by Dakota (new)

Dakota Franklin (dakotafranklin) | 306 comments We're all in IT today. I could maybe, though even that would need some thought, do most of my work, the bits that nobody but an engineer with my experience can do, without computers, with a slide rule or a calculator. But you can forget doing all the other necessary stuff. You just can't keep on top of all the legislation and regulations without a computer, and filling in forms would drive me psycho. I have a colleague permanently with me in the car who is both an engineer and a lawyer, and he never curses as foully as at forms that won't accept routine details auto-filled. There's also the specs and usage instruction that the design engineer had better write because otherwise they will be screwed up, and these have huge sections of legal requirements that a computer just block-copies.

The advantage of computers is that once they're set up right, they let you work smart by taking over repetitive tasks for you.

We make out new hires work in IT for a month if they're senior people, for three to six months if they're trainees, depending on how urgently we need to slot them in somewhere. Just so they can find their way around all the information, because the site map is already a guide to what is expected of them when they work with us. Better than I can explain in an hour, anyway.
