You know what? I think, that this might be a really good idea. Movie won't cover it all, but a mini series might be a solution.
Still, the show should be on top level to show the magic of the book. It can't be ''almost transcendent" - it must be fully transcendent and stunning.
Call me a pesimist, but I can't think of anyone, who will put such money to make a mini series. It will cost about 5 times as much, as a movie (or more, i have no idea how to count that).

Zuzana I love love love this book and the story so much, that I do not want it to be made into a film. I think the big budget film would destroy it as it would never be as good as the book itself. I am actually dreading for it to be made into a film... I think this is one of those book which are better be left in reader's imagination.

AHHHH!! :)"

Those are incredible news!! Now if they can nail Tim Burton or Guillermo del Toro to direct it this can turn into something amazing!!

My main problem with the idea of a movie is that so much of The Night Circus is reliant on the readers own imagination. A movie wouldn't create it in the same way (simply because of the mediums inherent nature). It removes the interaction between reader and story which creates the magic of the book.

I kind of agree with you but I also don't because basically all books are viewed a certain way by different people. I think it could be done, especially by an outstanding director. If I could choose any director to make the movie I would choose either Ang Lee (Life of Pi) or Terry Gilliam (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus). Also if it were to become a movie, it shouldn't be advertised as a young adult book-to-film adaptation.

I can see it being a fantastic movie (if done properly) in its own right but not as a book-to-film adaption. That's my point. It just wouldn't be the same and I personally love the book too much as it is to be able to enjoy any film adaption.

Olivia Ah, I see what you mean. A movie version will be a completely different experience. For just movie goers though it could be good.

Emma I'm not sure this book would make a great movie adaptation because of time jumps, slight lack of plot, and mostly, the clarity (or lack thereof) of the magic used. Readers are most likely more forgiving about the mystery aspect than movie-goers are. But oh my goodness the cinematography should be amaaazinnnng <3

I'm sooo excited for the casting decisions though. They might make it or break it for me. I think Carrie Hope Fletcher (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMfu-... She's an actress as well as a musician and Youtuber, and she loves The Night Circus and would probably be interested in the part) would make the perfect Celia! And B.J. Novak would make an alright Marco? I don't know, he's a little old, but he has the face of a child. :P Any thoughts on casting???

Brittain *Needs a Nap and a Drink* I believe that the movie just wouldn't be able to compare to the book. Part of the thrill is imagining the circus and I have a distinct feeling that whatever they come up with would not come close to the wonder of what they have described in the books.

It would just seem like digital tricks instead of magic.

message 310: by [deleted user] (new)

I am with Bittain on this. The book was just so amazing that I think a film would just destroy the magic of it. I think this is best left as a book and not made into a film.

Kimberly Moses the only justice to this story would be an anime film in the style of "The Triplets of Bellevue" or "The Illusionist" I am tired of "green and blue screen" films...

Lizzie I imagine it would be awesome as a movie.

katie lynn Yes!

Thought the same recently, anime would be the perfect medium for it. :)

Aline YES! Of course it would not be the same as reading the book, but omg it would be amazing ! I`d totally watch it !

Book_Lover I believe that a movie would ruin this magnificent book. Sometimes an imagine cannot express what is being described in a page and leaves as to imagine on our heads.

Crystal Allen Las Vegas native here. The whole time I read this book I felt it begging to be made into a vivid film noir movie. I don't know if Edwardian attire is still popular with cosplay fans, but 'The Night Circus' practically kicked off the trend. Would love to see a movie made from this book, but it wouldn't be cheap. One thing I would change is the contortionist. When you know people who work with contortionists, you know they really are destroying their spinal columns and joints to give a cheap thrill to a bunch of lookie-loos, which is why I find them extremely cringy. Insofar that character was a beautiful Asian woman, I would prefer a kimono-ed damsel who could conjure holographic dragons and other strange beasts from smoke. I still harbor hopes someone in Hollywood will get a clue and make this story a movie. Yes, it is thin on plot, but you can always hire great writers (not rhesus monkeys) to help out with that.

toointofiction YES!! DEFINITELY!! This book was incredible and truly deserves to be made into a movie. A good movie though, nobody wants another Vampire Academy disaster.

Leslie Anne Veronica wrote: "Oh, Tim Burton would give it that twist! Love that idea. So, what character would Johnny Depp play, then? Lol."

I think he could be a good Prospero or Chandresh

absolutely yes

message 321: by Erin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Erin I would love for it to be made into a movie! But I have been disappointed by many movies inspired by books. But the movie would be absolutely AMAZING if they did it right.

Cora-Laine Chad wrote: "I think that while it would be moderately difficult to portray the character development and convert the writing style to cinema, I do believe that the special effects would be stunning!"

The effects would be gorgeous! Yet, I think that the story would need a bit more work on the character development side and smoothing out the narrative beforehand.

message 323: by Rox (new) - rated it 5 stars

Rox That would be interesting, tho I feel like there is a high risk to ruin it. Some parts of the book were sped up a looot and there is a tendency to do this in movies, too...

message 324: by Ali (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ali Chakir Yes. Preferably Directed by Tim Burton

Carrington Yes, I think it would be so stunning on film! The descriptions blew me away.

message 326: by Livvy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Livvy The scenery would be gorgeous! Especially considering the amount of detail we got in the book~!
