Actually that's what I would fear, should they choose to adapt "The Night Circus".
It's such a beautiful story, and it would be a great challenge to bring it to the big screen, but I think most of today's directors would kill it to death with FX.
But going off on a tangent, and because it's on my mind a lot lately:
Did anybody else imagine Clara Bow in the role of Celia?
And do you think that the intials Morgenstern chose are a coincidence?

That being said, I was at the movies last night and there was a preview for a cirque du soleil movie, and for a few seconds, I thought it was The Night Circus and I was SUPER pumped.
so If it did get made into a movie, I would still love to see it.
BUT
I think the magic of it all would be easier to translate if it were a mini series

I think it would be good for a film. The magic would be amazing in the imax. They would just need to make a lot of changes so it wouldn't be as boring as the book. I think Tim Burton would be a good choice to direct it. If you've seen "Big Fish", Nigh Circus would be pretty much like that

Definitely.....it could be magical (sorry) in 3D!! This book was a delight. Loved it.

You mean have nothing to do with the book? I love Tim Burton, and his vision would make a fantastic atmosphere, but it must stick to the book. AinW did not. In fact, it was not like either of the books.
I think it'd be a movie then book

Good point, But i'm still kind of curious what they would do with all this. But I have to agree with you.

I agree. I just can't see how they'd translate all the subtleties that make this book so wonderful to me into a film. And all the special effects?
The beauty of this book (to me) is that even though it's so vividly described, it's so different for each individual. I don't want to ruin that with a movie, especially if they do it wrong.
If they did it right, however, it would be breathtaking.

Depending the actor's playing the parts would be the main obstacle

IMO, any movie attempt will only serve to lower this book's reputation.
John wrote: "While the visual aesthetics could be captured, I doubt any of today's directors would be able to properly capture the actual mood of the book in an organized movie, especially with today's 1.5-2 ho..."
Yeah true.
Yeah true.

I don't know about Tim Burton. His aesthetic would be perfect for the film, however, so many of his movies end up being cartoonish in a way, and I feel like this movie would have to be handled much more seriously. =]

but the special effects people will have a wonderful challenge.
