Katrina Passick Lumsden I would love to see it on-screen, but I have this very real fear that Hollywood would totally cock it up. If they made it to mirror the book, so that the whole movie is a sort of dreamlike, stream-of-conscience parade that provides plenty of eyegasms, that would be awesome.

Jessica Definitely!

McLendon I have trouble believing that a movie could capture the imagery in this book. But I would go see the film (if it got made) just to see another person's vision of this magical world.

I don't understand the automatic link of a good book with a movie. These days there doesn't seem to be a single book discussion without someone asking when there's going to be a movie, talking about possible actors, and so on...
I understand authors mentioning that, after all it's more money for their (usually) struggling lives, but readers...?
If you've loved a book, nothing - no movie, tv series, best actor or director - will ever compare to the images you already have in your mind, so why beg to be disappointed?
It's beyond me...

Jacob Two words, Darren Aronofsky.

Cassie I do not think a movie would be a great thing for the book. The plot is long and it is supposed to be that way. Trying to cram this book into something under two hours would be horrible! You get to know the characters (and there are a lot of them!) so completely that it takes TIME. I love the book so dearly that the thought of them ruing it is rather disheartening.

Also, while I love the writing's descriptions one of the reasons they are so vivid is the reader's imagination. I would think that the more vivid the imagination of the reader the more vivid the circus was. While the special effects of a movie could be truly remarkable it might ruin the extraordinary, enchanting and occasionally bewildering ones that are so real in my mind.

message 57: by Jo (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jo I'd definitely see it! Special effects can be so amazing these days, it could be a really beautiful film. Only thing is they'd probably have to spice up the story somehow to make it more dramatic for a film audience, the story itself is probabably just half or three quarters of a movie as it is.

I would also like to see it done by G del Torro. I mean just imagine what the Ice Garden, the labyrinth or the carusel would look like with his touch! :)

Burton I feel may perhaps have the style but it would be just like any one of his other films; with J Depp and H Boham Carter. As much as I like those two they do not match to the book at all!

message 59: by Fran (new) - rated it 4 stars

Fran I was enchanted by the story and it's characters. A movie would be cool, especially if given the TimBurton, Spielberg or George Lucas treatment. .

Cynjit I found this book to be beautiful and as I read it...I imagined it a certain way. I have a feeling that the movie would definitely not live up to my expectations...I wish someone could do it well.

message 61: by YQ (new) - rated it 5 stars

YQ I wish I could see it as a movie or just in any form visually! It will be so beautiful especially all the different tents and the Clock! I love the clock! Somehow when im reading this book all these magical stuff dont seem cheesy at all! However, I think they would have to modify the plot because it would be hard to capture the characters well on film! I would love to see her ghost father! hohoho!

Great idea for a TV mini-series. HBO, are you listening???

Evelyn YESSSS !!!! TOTALLY Tim Burton would be the ideal director for this movie !!

Melanie YES!

Danielle No, I don't think a movie would be able to capture the mystery of the circus. I think this is one book that definitely better left to the readers imagination.

Oh my Gosh, Erin - halfway through the book, I was thinking what a stunning treatment Gilliam would give this!

Peter This is a pre-McLuhan book. A radio book. An exercise in love, imagination and imagery. A vivid love story is what it is. And, Bravo!

Barbie The Night Circus would be an exciting movie to produce with all the rich eye candy detail (a credit to the author's ability)! My only concern is money... it would need a big budget to bring the circus to life with the rich descriptive storyline.

I completely agree with Rachel. The film would be stunning visually - how could it not be? - and I honestly think a retelling could only improve the characters and plot. What little there was of them.

message 71: by Sarah (new) - added it

Sarah Logan And for my two cents, I wouldn't want Tim Burton anywhere near it, he's terrible! It seems almost too obvious to suggest this ... but Baz Luhrman, anyone?

Candace It would make a fantastic movie!!!

Heather I see that I'm in the minority here, but if ever there was a book that should NOT be made into a movie, this is it. I can't blame EM for optioning it as the kittens need to be fed. But this is a work of pure imagination and there is no way that a movie can do it justice.

Julia Night Circus could be a beautiful, amazing movie, IF it has the right director. Julie Taymor, Baz Lurhmann, or Guillermo del Toro could make it as magical as it needs to be. Anyone know who really is directing?

message 75: by Eml (new) - rated it 5 stars

Eml I just don't think Hollywood takes book to movie projects seriously anymore, they would loose the little details, maybe even big ones. That could mess up the entire plot since everything is connected.

message 76: by Amy (last edited Aug 14, 2012 01:58PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Amy Keeley I think they would have to re-write several aspects of the plot to make it a decent film story-wise. It's isn't thought out well enough to be quiet, and it doesn't have enough action to avoid a focus on plot. If they try to make it "as is" it's going to fail.

That said, I think Guillermo del Toro would be perfect for this. The images of Pan's Labyrinth match what I read in The Night Circus perfectly.

If Tom Hiddleston were younger, I'd say he'd make a perfect Marco. See clips from Return to Cranford and you'll see what I mean.

Tim Curry as Prospero/Hector Bowen.

Johnny Depp as Alexander?

Ellen Page as Celia.

David Ogden Stiers as Herr Thiessen.

Anyway, that's my dream list.

"It isn't thought out well enough?" Wow, you just insulted one of my favorite books. I think it's perfect as it is, therefore it doesn't need a movie.

Sarah I think provided they got the casting right (once again: no Shia LeBouf anywhere) and really kept to the circus' signature black-and-white color scheme, I think it could be pulled off. No movie ever does the book justice, but many are worth seeing anyway. :D

message 81: by Amy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Amy Keeley @Eml: I'm sorry you felt insulted. That wasn't my intention.

@Jacob: Yup, Ellen Page. I think she would make a very good Celia.

Jacob Amy wrote: "@Eml: I'm sorry you felt insulted. That wasn't my intention.

Whoever plays Celia will need grace, and charisma, both of which Ellen Page lack. Personally I'd choose somebody like Emily Blunt, or Rooney Mara, maybe Eva Green if she were a bit younger.

Julia (: Yes. It MUST be made into a movie. Gosh the book is amazing.

h.e.yoseph I think it would be brilliant as a movie. I just worry that the details would be too complex; there's just so much going on. It would also be quite confusing to people who haven't read the book-seeing as the book goes back and forth between years. I want it as a movie, but I just don't want it to ruin the book (as in it's not as good as the book...therefore people who haven't read the book think it's shit).

Judith no. But I am sure it will be. Better to watch a real circus.

message 86: by Sole (last edited Aug 20, 2012 12:21PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sole I'm for making this book into something like cartoon with a techique of cutting the environment and figures of paper with colours black and white only. Well, it's mine opinion but I don't see "The night circus" as a movie. By the way, it's the best book I've read this year.

message 87: by Mandy (new) - rated it 1 star

Mandy Ellen Page is a fantastic suggestion as Celia. She would bring an air of wit/intelligence to what, IMO, is an overly sappy narrative. I'm not a fan of the book, but am watching to see what Hollywood does with it. The movie was optioned by David Heyman, who produced the Harry Potter movies, so maybe he'll go for a British cast. So start scouring the cast lists of Harry Potter and Downton Abbey for suggestions. They have hired a screenwriter, so it's into development, but lots of movies with scripts never make it to production. The good news is that this book badly needed some tightening in its narrative, and maybe a seasoned writer can flesh out some of the relationships that I found lacking (say, Celia & Marco, for example). The constraints of a movie will squish the action into a shorter timeframe and may redeem a story that took forever to get wherever it ended up (I still don't get it.)

message 88: by Jacob (last edited Aug 21, 2012 10:03AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jacob Ellen Page, is an overrated, repugnant monkey-bitch who got lucky once!

message 89: by Mandy (new) - rated it 1 star

Mandy Ellen was in two hit movies, Juno and Inception. So, in her advanced embryonic stage she actually got lucky twice.

message 90: by Jacob (last edited Aug 21, 2012 10:16AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jacob Juno, is one of the most overrated movies of the last 20 years. As for Inception, she was deservedly overshadowed by Joseph Gordan Levit, Leonardo Dicaprio, and Ken Watanabe.

message 91: by Mandy (new) - rated it 1 star

Mandy Can't argue with you about the movies, both were meh. But I feel that The Night Circus is an overrated book, so yeah IMO, Ellen's perfect for it. But Heyman is British, and I still wonder whether they might go British for most of the main stars, except for Bailey.

Kelsey Grammar would be great as Hector. Maybe Adrien Brody could play Chandresh, he's due for a comeback, don't you think?

Robin Patchen I'd love to see it.

I regret disagreeing, but I have yet to see Kelsey Grammar act. He is a TV personality who plays himself (as do most "actors" on TV). I would love to see this done as a mini-series with a British, drawn-from-the-stage cast (think of the amazing cast of "The History Boys").

Daleen I would love to see this as a movie! As I was reading it, I could visualize the outfits and see the tricks in my minds-eye. I could actually smell popcorn and caramel .... The special effects must be done right though!

message 97: by Kim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kim Mccormick Chad wrote: "I think that while it would be moderately difficult to portray the character development and convert the writing style to cinema, I do believe that the special effects would be stunning!"

I agree, I think this would be a specatulor movie for special effects!! But like with most books to movies, I am sure they would ruin the story. I loved the story, and it is too complex for a movie, they would have to cut to many charactor relationships.

message 98: by Kim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kim Mccormick Veronica wrote: "I still think it would be too soon after "Water for Elephants"."

That is a perfect example of a very good book into a terrible movie!! I loved the book, and I was told DO NOT watch the movie, but after several days, I just could not resist and rented the movie. I was so disappointed, i absoluted hated what they did to the movie. Why can't they follow the books a bit more closely?

message 99: by [deleted user] (new)

I think this book would either make a brilliant film or a really rubbish film, it just has to be done right. I know I would see it instantly if it was made into a film. Certainly would love to see it in 3D

Kris I would love to see this come to live on screen. It is such a visually stunning read-
