Haley I read this in the 8th grade. We subsequently watched a movie adaptation. We were also tested on this book at some point. I remember that the teacher made us do this specific test in the dark. Nobody was allowed to make a sound... no coughing, no sharpening of pencils, no leaving for the restroom. If someone was to make a sound before the entire class was finished testing, she declared that class dead. I remember I was really sick when I took that test: coughing (dog barking is more like it), sneezing, and sniffeling - the whole enchilada! Somehow I managed to muffle all of that and suffer through the entire test without "killing my class"! Come to think of it... I think my class - there were like four seperate English classes - was the only class that didn't die that day... Thinking back on it now, that was a really cool English teacher!

Bridget's Quiet Corner I didn't have to read it for school..Even though the book and the "story" was talked about. I didnt read it until last year. I read it just because... :-)

Chelsea I read it during school. It was part of our curriculum to learn while in English class. I loved it and at the time I really didn't like reading historical writings and such... but this book really got me into reading more about history...especially during the times of the Nazis. I found it more interesting that I thought it would be.

the sound of Autumn During English class in the 8th grade, we read the play version of Anne's diary, but although it was encouraged, it was not mandatory to read it. Still, I had nothing else to read, and I thought that it'd be interesting to read. So, no I did not have to read it for school, but I read it anyway.

I'm actually glad I didn't have to do it for school, because I despise assigned book assignments. I am a huge reader, and it almost physically hurts me to hear people hating on good books so much just because they were for a school project, but I can't blame them. When it becomes mandatory and not at your own comfortable pace, it just sucks all the enjoyment out of it.

Since, as I mentioned earlier, I did get to read this outside of school work and what not, I actually thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gave me a great new perspective on WW2 that I really appreciated.

Leah Yes, I read this book for school. I loved it. A must read. Rec for history buffs.

message 157: by Janice (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janice Acosta For starters...I'm from the Philippines so we have a different curriculum for world literature.

In HS, we never had to read it as a book review but I chose this to review personally as a teacher's pet kind of thing.

In college, we were asked to read it as English majors...

Back when I still taught English I include this in discussion and assign it to one of the top ten in every class I had.

message 158: by Janice (new) - rated it 4 stars

Janice Acosta Liking it is a different thing altogether... It's hard not to like it because it's interesting. The Nazi era, Elektra complex and the fact that it's told by a little girl who had to hide from it all. These immediately draw attention.

But it is not for the narrow minded folks. You really had to put yourself in her shoes to understand the gravity of her situation and why she thought of the stuff that practically made her controversial.

I heard there's a better and an "unedited" version which showed more of the Elektra complex. Haven't read that but I plan to once I get a copy or find it online. :)

message 159: by Chris (new) - rated it 5 stars

Chris I had to read it in the early 1970's for my CSE english lit.

message 160: by Helen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Helen Yeah I read it for school but not for an exam. I really liked it, and I was planning to read it myself anyway. :)

message 161: by Avani (new) - rated it 2 stars

Avani Ashley wrote: "who didnt read this for school?"

My sentiments exactly. I probably would've enjoyed it much more if it hadn't been a school assignment. Assigning reading is much like forcing good food down your throat--you just don't enjoy it as much.

message 162: by Imke (new) - rated it 4 stars

Imke i had to read it for school but more because she was also dutch and she was in the war. i read it before i started high school so i already knew it when i had to read it for school purposes.

message 163: by Maeve (new) - rated it 4 stars

Maeve I Didn't read it for school(i'm home schooled anyways).
I read it when I was in 6th grade.
I thought it was OK, but It probably was a little advanced for me then.

message 164: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I believe it was an assigned read in 8th or 9th grade. My 15 year son hasn't been assigned this book, but I wish his school would add it to their list. It's so much better than the books he's been assigned.

My sister loved it too but I didn't really pay attention to it because my teacher was making us read it so that made me lose interest.

Weiting I know, teachers give you pressure, right?

message 170: by Idalis (new)

Idalis Brimos Totally, especially when it comes to reading a book.

Weiting By the way have you read Annne of Green Gables?
Great classic and to admit it, a lot funnier than Anne Frank's diary.

Imke Weiting wrote: "By the way have you read Annne of Green Gables?

Anne Frank's diary is written by a thirteen year old girl in the middle of a world war. she had to hide from Nazis who wanted her dead because of her religion and she had to grow up with all those adults watching over her. yes, this is the perfect setting for writing a comedy!

Weiting Imke wrote: "Weiting wrote: "By the way have you read Annne of Green Gables?

Yeah I know. How ironic.
Both books, have their pro's and also con's you've got to admit. So IMO I think both books are wonderful and special in their own little ways.

Will IV How the *expletive* are Anne of Green Gables and Anne Frank's Diary in any way similar (or comparable for that matter) aside from both having "Anne" in the title? I am facepalming so much right now.

Will IV Nathan wrote: "Some good fiction. Anne Frank was hide and seek champion for several years. :) Oh and it was a ball point pen that was used to write the diary and those pens were not made until the 50's...kinda off how that works."

That's patently false. Ballpoint pens were around and popular in Europe as early as the 1930s.

You should read The Diary of Anne Frank: The Critical Edition: http://amzn.to/PEouYu

"This valuable addition to the literature of the Holocaust assembles for the first time the three known versions of Frank's diary--the original, a self-edited version of same, and yet another edited by her father. It also contains a variety of related studies and reports, e.g., handwriting and paper analyses, new documentation regarding the Frank family's arrest, and a wealth of information about the diary's troubled publication history. Prepared under the auspices of the Netherlands State Institute for War Documentation, this authoritative volume will silence forever those who have denied the diary's authenticity. It honors and enriches a story that has inspired most of the civilized world for over 40 years. Mandatory for all but the smallest libraries."
