Tracy Grant | 14 comments In the early books it is Lan, I just love him. Reminds me of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings. Later on, Mat becomes a favourite, but Lan is still right up there.

message 2: by Serge (new)

Serge Fjetland (corhen) | 7 comments thats a hard question. When i first read the book it had to be rand, but now i find i enjoy reading about Mat. his story, about how he is fated to marry the daughter of nine moons, and how he and thom have slowly become more and more alike

message 3: by Cornelia (new)

Cornelia (stage) | 2 comments Lan and Nynaeve - and that hasn't changed since 1994. :-D

message 4: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Grant | 14 comments I dont like Nynaeve at all. Funnily though, my daughter (14) told me this morning that Nynaeve is her favourite character. I dont really like any of the girls that much, they irritate me a little bit.

message 5: by Erica (new)

Erica | 27 comments Overall: Rand

Nynaeve is probably second.

Moiraine is also up there.

But on this reread, I find myself liking characters I barely noticed - or outright disliked - before. Verin, Thom, Mat.

message 6: by Misa (new)

Misa (mitsubachi2g) This is my 1st read of the series; currently almost done w/ DR. So far Lan is definitely a fav character of mine. Was loving Thom, too. I love Nynaeve's firey temper and how she uses it. Not too sure about the other girls yet... they are starting to get annoying to me at this point. I like how Matt is developing right now with Thom. Must keep reading to see where this goes!

message 8: by Sharon (new)

Sharon | 1 comments The first time I read WoT, I was still in primary school, so I would have probably been eleven or twelve. Lan was my favourite then, and is still pretty high up there, but now I like reading about Perrin, Siuan, and of course, I love reading about the Matt/Thom kind of parallel.

message 9: by Brett (new)

Brett Young | 3 comments I am starting the series, and many of the characters are the "generic brand of characters", all except for Perrin, Nyneave, Egwene, and Elyas so far I am only on page 472 of book one so I expect this to change as the characters become more complex.

message 10: by Luke (new)

Luke Charlton (justcharlton) | 2 comments Sounds weird but I was a huge fan of Verin up until recently...but I think that Elyas is such a great character. I'd love to see a side story just about him.

message 11: by Brett (new)

Brett Young | 3 comments Who's Verin???

message 12: by Jp (new)

Jp (themightyguest) | 9 comments Mat. Easily Mat. He has one of the most dramatic character arcs and you could tell in the writing during the Jordan years that the author had the most fun with him - that he really identified with Mat. That care translated into the story.

message 13: by Luke (new)

Luke Charlton (justcharlton) | 2 comments Brett wrote: "Who's Verin???"

She is an Aes Sedai..don't think she appears until book 2.

Yeah, I think that's about the point. And yeah, she was super cool, all the way through the series.

message 15: by Brett (new)

Brett Young | 3 comments ok cool
i will certainly see through

message 16: by Amber (new)

Amber Hoxit (clove311) | 13 comments I've read them all up to book#11 and So far I know everyone has said that the girls irritate them, but I think without their insight the book would lose alot of its humor. The parallels between how the men see things and how the women see things make me laugh out loud alot. My fave character so far...I would have to say Faile. Shes so strong willed and loves perin so much. He's also one of my favorites.

message 17: by Jp (new)

Jp (themightyguest) | 9 comments Amber wrote: "I've read them all up to book#11 and So far I know everyone has said that the girls irritate them, but I think without their insight the book would lose alot of its humor. The parallels between how..."

Perrin really picked up for me in the last book. I've been irritated with him throughout the whole (view spoiler) that I've hardly been able to stand it. His progress as a character in the last book was as amazing, to me, as the progress Rand and Egwene made in the book prior.

I definitely agree! I thought they hadn't really given me enough rand in a couple books and also I didn't really identify with egwenes character but once we got to see how she deals with different issues and lays plans she became a big character for me.

message 19: by Jp (last edited Apr 11, 2012 10:22AM) (new)

Jp (themightyguest) | 9 comments I honestly didn't care for Egwene one way or another prior. I followed her because her story was tied to everyone else. I didn't hate her, but I didn't care about her either... Then the whole thing that went down in Gathering Storm. I spent basically that entire book on my feet cheering her on. It was fantastic.

Sanderson's work with WoT has been enough to convince me that one of these days here I really need to get involved with his Mistborn stuff.

Edit: I'm trying to avoid spoilers for you so you don't get too ruined for the book. lol

message 20: by Amber (new)

Amber Hoxit (clove311) | 13 comments Haha thanks! I cannot wait, and your right I'm definitely checking out the mistborn books as soon as I can. Right now, I feel like I know all the characters so well that I laugh with them, feel sad when they cry and cheer them on audibly (Which gets me some strange looks lol)

message 21: by Eric (new)

Eric Benoit (elmseeker) | 1 comments Moiraine and Nynaeve for sure. These are 2 women who have power and aren't afraid to use it, but they are also feminine enough to make them likable.

message 22: by Erica (new)

Erica | 27 comments I laugh a lot when reading these books, too...I wish more fantasy novels would inject some humor like WoT does. Not like the Discworld books (that humor is too over the top for me), but little subtle things. I started a new thread asking what everyone thinks the funniest scenes are.

message 23: by Jem (new)

Jem | 1 comments Aviendha is my favourite female character - so much so that Aviendha is my daughter's middle name!

message 24: by Amber (new)

Amber Hoxit (clove311) | 13 comments Jem you have the kind of dedication I would love to have lol I so love that your naming your kids awesome honorable names instead of the stupid crap people name them now, apple anyone? Jem your awesome and so is your daughter! I'm demanding to name my 2nd child something from WoT now, whether my fiance likes it or not lol

message 25: by Jp (new)

Jp (themightyguest) | 9 comments I don't think I could do a Wheel of Time name unless it was something Two Rivers like Rand, Mat, or Tam. I've got my wife pretty much convinced, though, that we're gonna name our daughter Coraline if we have a little girl. Huge Neil Gaiman fan.

message 26: by Nandan (new)

Nandan Vora | 2 comments Mat....but i think sanderson ruined mat...so mat till book 11...

message 27: by Jp (new)

Jp (themightyguest) | 9 comments Nandan wrote: "Mat....but i think sanderson ruined mat...so mat till book 11..."

Mat in Gathering Storm was flat and two dimensional. I agree... In Towers of Midnight, though, Sanderson had him figured out. He was much better...

message 28: by Laura (new)

Laura | 5 comments I am reading the series for the first time, and I'm only on the second book. I'm totally sucked in, though. I love Lan, and I feel for Rand like he's a little brother. Moiraine is also a favorite, and I'm trying to like Nynaeve but she is kind of bratty. Her love for Lan is what makes her likable.

Mat annoys me. He's a whiner and clueless. Maybe he will get better as I read more.

message 29: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Grant | 14 comments I loved Mat in Towers of Midnight! In fact I love Mat generally and how his character really changes and "grows" through the books

message 30: by Leah (last edited Jun 29, 2012 03:38PM) (new)

Leah (horsenducks) Lan is definitely my favorite, although I'm only in the middle of The Shadow Rising. So far his personality seems the most "real" to me.

I don't mind Mat. He reminds me a bit of a friend of mine, although more ignorant than the friend.

I currently can't stand Egwene, but it sounds like she may become more likeable later on.

message 31: by Abhinav (new)

Abhinav | 16 comments It's interesting how nobody here has named Rand. Looks like Jordan's gone too far in trying to make him flawed.
I hope the final book turns him into the hero he's meant to be!

I liked Mat and Egwene in the later books. Nynaeve - comic relief mostly for me! Honestly I found her quite silly and airheaded in the earlier books, but I loved the way she stood up for Rand later on when no one else did.

PS: If you were to start a 'which character do you dislike the most' poll, Elayne would be right up there!

message 32: by Isabel (new)

Isabel | 1 comments Hi, new here. My favorite characters are the three boys: Rand, Mat and Perrin. Of course, I've only made it up to the seventh book, so that could change, but I doubt it.
I like where Jordan has taken Mat's story so far, and I like that all three of them have such important stories.
I like Avienda, Moiraine, Nynaeve, and Min the most out of the women in the stories.
I never really cared for Elayne or Egwene, though Egwene is growing on me.

message 33: by Jeevan (new)

Jeevan Joseph (itsjeevs) | 11 comments Hi!

I loved Mat after he got out of Rhudiean. Especially the kind of way he thinks when in trouble.
I hated Egwene- throughout the series. But Gathering Storm Changed everything. She truly deserves the place now. I loved the way she finally got to claim the respect from her peers.
I hated Nyanvae. All througout the series. I hated the way she was so annoying and imposing. The only time I loved her, was when she took Lan to Maradon, next to the Aryth Ocean and raised the Banner of the Golden Crane. I almost cried!!

But there are a few who were always too good to be true. Lan, for example. There is not even one flaw you can find in him. Verin, I loved her- in her ups and downs. Even the way it all ends. Ingtar- I've never loved a character more. He is so human- In hope, in duty, in regret.

There is one person I would have wanted more of- Hurin. The way Hawkwing says "Sometimes the Wheel adds to our number, friend. Perhaps you will find yourself among us, one day.", I hoped we'd get to see more of Hurin. But he was brutally taken away from the thread.

message 34: by Laura (new)

Laura | 5 comments When I first posted I had just finished the first book and had only just begun the second. Now I'm in the middle of the third, and my feelings are still pretty much the same. Lan is paramount as my favorite male character, but Perrin is becoming a favorite, as well. I love the way he thinks things through and is so very sensitive, but he believes himself to be perceived as clumsy and slow. Heart-wrenching!

As for Nynaeve, she is growing on me. I find myself growing impatient with Egwene - she is just immature.

Rand gets on my nerves every time he starts to brood and have pity parties for himself. He is important to the story, but he also lacks maturity and I imagine that from book to book he grows somewhat.

And of course, the Aes Sedai are either fascinating or terrifying. I love Moiraine and Verin, though.

message 35: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 14, 2012 01:49AM) (new)

My favourite character would definitely be Nynaeve. Followed closely by Lan, then Aviendha. Min after that. :) I also love Moiraine.....

On my second reading of the series - I just finished the fifth book - and honestly, my favorite character in the whole thing was Asmodean. He was really interesting for a book and a half, and seemed like his story had some potential. Sadly, he appears to be lost to us forever.

Mmmm... I've been wondering what happened to him - I probably missed it. :)

message 39: by Charles (new)

Charles | 2 comments When I read the series for the first time my favorite character was easily Perrin. Since my second(around book 6 probably every time a new book came out) and subsequent readings of the series, Mat has been hands-down my favorite character. I think of Mat as the comic relief of the series. His humor and accidental heroics make me cheer when I come upon a new chapter about him.

message 40: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Christensen | 1 comments I love mat. No really, i do! Fain, Lan, Randy, then Elayne. Nynaeve is fine she does get a litle ridiculous after a while though i think thats the point. But i love, oh i love the part when nynaeve and Lan get to gether (FINALY!!) on the docks. THAT was the funniest part of hers. Fain cuz hes funny and creapy and you can tell hes smarter and more insane than any of the other characters.. and you thought Randy was insane!< THINK AGAIN!!

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

I love Lan, Nynaeve and rand. Min and Egwene just annoy me :)

>>True!!!

message 43: by Liam (new)

Liam (liam1988) | 2 comments It has to be Mat, he's a rogue, pest, gambler, cheeky lout, but above all that he's loyal, will do the right thing. defends his friends even if it puts him in extreme danger.
I just love him and the Band Of The Red Hand.

message 44: by Paul (new)

Paul (mouse18) | 2 comments I think I gotta go with Mat. He seems to have so much more depth than other characters in the series. The runner up for me would probably be Moiraine though.

message 45: by Eclaire (last edited Nov 17, 2012 02:44PM) (new)

Eclaire | 4 comments And no one has mentioned Ishamael yet. He is one of the most interesting characters in the whole series. You can never know what he has up in his sleeves and I also like how crazy he is.

Nynaeve is second. She always stands up for what she belives in and cares for no opinions others might think about her.

And of course Mat. He comes after Nynaeve.

message 46: by Gianluca (new)

Gianluca (gianlucag) I just started Winter's Heart, and so far my favorite male characters are Rand, Mat and Perrin. I know they are predictable choices, being the main characters and all, but their chapters are the most entertaining and I really like how they evolve throughout the series. Lan and Thom are also on the list, but we don't seen them often enough, unfortunately.
As for favorite female characters, definitely Min, Birgitte and Aviendha. I don't dislike Nynaeve, not exactly, but I find her annoying most of the time. I honestly can't see why readers (and Lan, for that matter) like her so much.

message 47: by Derek (new)

Derek Benton (derekbenton) | 2 comments Hurin!

message 48: by Michael (new)

Michael Hawk (mehawk) | 1 comments Mat and Min...I would read an entire series just about Mat anytime. Brigitte gets a strong nod too.

message 49: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 1 comments First I really loved Nynaeve, I thought she was awesome because she did what she wanted. Later she was really annoying (when she and Elayne were together). Still I think she's sharing #1 with Moiraine :).

message 50: by Victor (new)

Victor (279victor) | 9 comments Hi, new here. I am in the middle of the fifth book, and the story is very interesting. Nobody mentioned here Loial--I think he is also pretty likable. I don't know what's going to happen with him in the rest of the series. Gareth Bryne is also impressive. Lanfear and her story is also interesting. If I were instead of Rand, I think I would have easily gone for her proposal of ruling the world with Rand. Gaul, Rhuarc, Aram, well there are so much in everybody's story that makes everyone interesting. lol
