Buddy Read - A Princess of Mars

Hi, ladies,I have two questions.
First one: I've just begun reading A Princess of Mars(chapter 1) and it is... different. Not bad, but really different from the kind of books in this discussion group. I'm a little lost: is it a romance? Is it a classic? Why did you choose this book?
And second question, what are the deadlines?

I think it is considered a classic and science fiction. Don't think it is a romance. I wanted to read it because of the John Carter movie coming out. We haven't set any dates for it but since you've started I'll start it soon. Maybe later today or tomorrow.
This book is free through Gutenberg Press; it is in various formats.http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/62
OK, Anna, my face is really red at the moment. To be honest, I saw that there was an Anna and I though that, without knowing, I said yes to this Buddy read, so I got the book. Now that I have just begun the book, do you mind if I join you?
Okay, I read the forward and the first chapter. Questions About the Forward
Why John Carter appear not to age? Why were there no marks on his body? Did he possible die from exposure to the elements, and at his own “hand”? Why the stipulation about 21 years? Could you resist opening the envelope? Why did the “huge gold-plated spring lock” only open from the inside of his tomb?
Questions for Chapter 1
Why did ERB choose the Arizona Hills? Is it somehow more mystical?
What do you think of John Carter? Is he a typical hero of old? In what way?
Guess I'd better get busy. I was sick. (not seriously) but I didn't feel like reading at all. gasp! Feeling better but have slight headache.

Started reading and got to chapter 3.Questions About the Forward
Why John Carter appear not to age? Why were there no marks on his body? Did he possible die from exposure to the elements, and at his own “hand”? Why the stipulation about 21 years? Could you resist opening the envelope? Why did the “huge gold-plated spring lock” only open from the inside of his tomb?
Interesting to be sure. Hopefully many of those questions will be answered through the book(s). My understanding is that John Carter wrote his manuscript years after it happened.
Questions for Chapter 1
Why did ERB choose the Arizona Hills? Is it somehow more mystical? Perhaps the remote location. Perhaps the myths and legends of the area played a part.
What do you think of John Carter? Is he a typical hero of old? In what way? He's portrayed as a fighter, a warrior. So yes, typical in that matter. I'm actually liking it so far. It runs at a quicker pace than many "classic" novels.
I'm finished and I liked it. Though it is more sci-fi, action adventure, and fantasy, there is romance included. This is the first in a series of books so the ending leaves you hanging a bit but still I did like it.
Chapter 2 through 5 Questions1. After taking refuge in a cave, John Carter faints and when he comes to he is standing over his own body. What did you think when you read that?
2. John Carter wakes up on Mars. He knew he was on Mars. How do you think he knew it? What do you think of John Carter’s abilities?
3. What did you think of the first Martians that John Carter met?
4. Did you like Sola? What about the “watchdog”?
Ohhhhhhhhhhh. Discussion Questions. You know how I LOVE DQs, Pamela. **sigh** I'm so behind in my reading.
Is anyone planning on see the movie, John Carter, in the theater or will you wait until it comes out on DVD?
I want to go see it but it depends on opportunity and if they show it at our tiny theater. (It has one movie a week).
I’m on chapter 4. So far it’s difficult to me to find time to read this book. But I will. Eventually. First impressions: In these 3 chapters lots of really weird things have happened. Beginning by what we know about John. Usually books introduce you to characters before the main plot develops. Here you have de Foreword and PAM, things after things happen.
John Carter seems to be very, very old, but doesn’t act as an ancient being, that is, as a wise man, or as that typical old vampire that doesn’t care about anything. He acts impulsive and loyal.
Two things from the first chapters that make the book a little outdated:
1) The comment about “We all loved him, and our slaves fairly worshipped the ground he trod”. It remained me of Robinson Crusoe, a book I was unable to finish because it talked about Friday as a thing. What do you thing Minny (form The Help) would say about this comment?
2) The fact that Indians appear as savages. This bothered me, because if John was so old, he had had to live with lots of cultures and races.< /blockquote>
Here you have a pic from a comic which I’ve found useful for the march scene (my ebook doesn't have the pictures).![]()
Great pic, Anna. I think the fact this was written in the early 1900s does show. Not enough for it to really bother me. I still liked the book and plan on reading the next in the series.
Eep! I want to read this... alas. Do you think I have that problem, like people who fill up their plates too high, were my eyes are bigger than my stomach?
