I have two questions.
First one: I've just begun reading A Princess of Mars(chapter 1) and it is... different. Not bad, but really different from the kind of books in this discussion group. I'm a little lost: is it a romance? Is it a classic? Why did you choose this book?
And second question, what are the deadlines?

Now that I have just begun the book, do you mind if I join you?

Questions About the Forward
Why John Carter appear not to age? Why were there no marks on his body? Did he possible die from exposure to the elements, and at his own “hand”? Why the stipulation about 21 years? Could you resist opening the envelope? Why did the “huge gold-plated spring lock” only open from the inside of his tomb?
Questions for Chapter 1
Why did ERB choose the Arizona Hills? Is it somehow more mystical?
What do you think of John Carter? Is he a typical hero of old? In what way?

Interesting to be sure. Hopefully many of those questions will be answered through the book(s). My understanding is that John Carter wrote his manuscript years after it happened.
Questions for Chapter 1
Why did ERB choose the Arizona Hills? Is it somehow more mystical? Perhaps the remote location. Perhaps the myths and legends of the area played a part.
What do you think of John Carter? Is he a typical hero of old? In what way? He's portrayed as a fighter, a warrior. So yes, typical in that matter. I'm actually liking it so far. It runs at a quicker pace than many "classic" novels.

1. After taking refuge in a cave, John Carter faints and when he comes to he is standing over his own body. What did you think when you read that?
2. John Carter wakes up on Mars. He knew he was on Mars. How do you think he knew it? What do you think of John Carter’s abilities?
3. What did you think of the first Martians that John Carter met?
4. Did you like Sola? What about the “watchdog”?

Usually books introduce you to characters before the main plot develops. Here you have de Foreword and PAM, things after things happen.
John Carter seems to be very, very old, but doesn’t act as an ancient being, that is, as a wise man, or as that typical old vampire that doesn’t care about anything. He acts impulsive and loyal.
Two things from the first chapters that make the book a little outdated:
1) The comment about “We all loved him, and our slaves fairly worshipped the ground he trod”. It remained me of Robinson Crusoe, a book I was unable to finish because it talked about Friday as a thing. What do you thing Minny (form The Help) would say about this comment?
2) The fact that Indians appear as savages. This bothered me, because if John was so old, he had had to live with lots of cultures and races.< /blockquote>
Here you have a pic from a comic which I’ve found useful for the march scene (my ebook doesn't have the pictures).![]()
