Ditto.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments But I would have to look at my cell phone far more often than I do now for that to work, Sarah. I really am bad about checking for missed calls as it is... :D

message 103: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Mine chimes when I have a text message.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments But you have to have the phone near you to hear the chime. My phone is usually in my purse, left hanging on a doorknob either in my office, or in my bedroom.

Okay, I can see that this would be a reasonable goal for 2009 - be better about making proper use of my cell phone!

message 105: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Yeah, I usually have my phone with me. Sometimes I leave it in the bedroom. Also, since I'm usually in class or rehearsal or watching a show, my phone is usually on silent. But it flashes a red light when there is a message.

message 106: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I generally need about ten minutes longer to write the text than I would leaving a message, and my texts invariably look like this:

hI R U OPen 4 LUncH CaLl Me

I'll figure it out someday.

message 107: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) The more you text-type, the faster you'll get. Also, I have a Blackberry with a QWERTY keypad, so I'm pretty fast. I wish there were speed tests for texting!

message 108: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell I wish there were speed tests for texting!

There is:

http://money.cnn.com/2007/04/23/news/...

message 109: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Wow.

But I meant I wish I could time my own texting. I type 73 WPM and I'm even faster on 10-key (thank you, 12 years of banking). I just wonder how fast I am at texting.

message 110: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell BTW Sarah did you figure out a way to completely delete your facebook account?

message 111: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) No, I just deactivated it like you suggested. Do I still show up as one of your friends? Brent said I'm not married to him anymore on there.

message 112: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Heh.

Texting is annoying in class. I've had to lean on some students who think they're getting away with something while trying to text under the table.

message 113: by [deleted user] (new)

RA, you should watch a movie called "Hamlet 2." The teacher character is hilarious.

message 114: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I almost rented that this week, Montambo! Maybe I'll get it tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.

message 115: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell No, you're dead to me on facebook. You don't show up on my friends list.

Texting in class doesn't bother me like I thought it would before I started teaching. I also let my students bring their computers in, and I could care less if they are messaging on there either.

message 117: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I'm surprised at how few students bring computers to class, but I'm ok with it. I wouldn't mind them messaging on the computer, but the texting under the table is distracting...

message 118: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jesstrea) Sally, why does it bother you so little? I'm genuinely curious as I'm with RA on this one--

message 119: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Really? I guess because it is not as though they are completely disconnected from what we are doing in the room, feet up on the table, guffawing aloud at what their friend wrote. If they text, they do so discreetly and quickly, and usually can respond intelligently if I call on them while they are doing it.
The times I've tried to "discipline" a texter, the effort was futile and wasted more class time than when I ignore it.

Again, I really thought I would have a problem with it before I started teaching, so I'm amazed myself with my apathy.

message 120: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I guess I wouldn't worry if it was a quick text...but it seems like one text leads to another leads to another. I also don't like the whole "under the table" thing. I tell my students that if they have an emergency to take the phone outside and talk on it...they've been pretty cool about it, and there aren't many problems.

My students use texting to communicate with me and each other a lot...I have to learn how to text better....

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Does that mean your students have your cell number?

message 122: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yep. But I teach older students and I don't see them every day, etc. so I don't mind giving them cell number. If I don't want to talk with them I just turn it off:)

Back to New Year's:

Here's the view I had for most of the show. See the balcony up over across the way? That's where my VIP sister got to stand w/o tall eggheads in her way.

And here is Sweeter and me at the show:

Notice how I unabashedly post pictures in which I look normal and he looks, as he says, "Blair Witch." Sorry about that, Sweeter.

Leslie | 777 comments My 16 year old daughter was sick on Tues and Wed, so we stayed home. She finally started feeling better on Wed. afternoon, so that night we played Uno, and she got so silly, I think because it felt so good not to be sick anymore, we were laughing and joking and and having the best time. Then we watched a dvd of the old show One Day at a Time. It was fun. What's not fun is that I have pot on a folding chair next to me cause now I'm sick!RRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

message 127: by Cyril (last edited Jan 01, 2009 06:55PM) (new)

Cyril ...I have pot on a folding chair next to me...

Is there supposed to be another "a" in there?

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Re: #98 (I think), the Monster Moonpie apparently didn't rise, it just kinda swung back and forth on the crane from which it was suspended. And it was displayed across the river from the downtown area where all the people were, so it wasn't really visible. I've only gotten a couple reports so far, but that seems to be the general consensus.

Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!! Moonpie malfunction in Mobile, hahahahaha!!!

message 130: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) Sally, you're very pretty.

I had a teacher last semester who didn't allow computers in his classroom. He said it was because he didn't want people playing games or messaging during his lectures. I think that's stupid. It's their own time and money they're wasting if they're not paying attention.

I type faster than I write. I'd rather take notes on my laptop than with paper and pen.

message 131: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Thanks Sarah! :)

I agree with your perspective on that. And I feel that way about my students. The ones who didn't pay attention all semester ended up writing shitty papers and not paying attention to the themes we'd discussed all semester. It is their time and money that was wasted when they'll have to take the class again. Then again, some who brought their computers did amazingly great final projects.

Two students who brought their computers regularly both clearly had attention deficit issues, and could not/would not sit still, yet were the brightest, most engaged in class. It didn't matter to me what they were doing because they contributed in class, wrote intelligently, and were clearly participating.

Sometimes the ones who don't text/compute/message/write notes are the ones who have the most debilitating attention issues to the point of distracting those around them.

And I type way faster than I write too.

message 132: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Yeah, I don't mind computers in the class, and I type way faster than I write, too. I'm still surprised at how few students bring in computers. I think they feel like they're just one more thing to carry. I know most of them have laptops. I've asked. But I also email them my class materials ahead of time, so there isn't as much of a need to write things down unless writing things down helps them retain the content.

message 133: by Meen (new)

Meen (meendee) | 1733 comments Writing does help me retain. And I'm not a great typist, so typing actually requires me to put more attention into the typing than the listening. But I am a master written note-taker. I can pretty much get the whole lecture down verbatim.

message 134: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 777 comments Yes, there was supposed to be an "a" before pot--a pot to puke in--not to enjoy! I told you I was sick! Feeling better now! :)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments It is time to resurrect the New Year's Eve thread...

I have promised my wife and children I will stay up until midnight. Seriously, this might be the first time in twenty years.

What are you doing? Thoughts on NY Eve?

message 136: by Phil (new)

NY eve is a pretty lame holiday for me this year.

message 139: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1027 comments I'll probably have to go to a party, but I really prefer to be at home New Year's Eve. I get very reflective. But I've been a real hermit lately, so we'll see.

message 140: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I've stayed in the last few New Year's, usually watching movies with friends. This year my sisters are visiting, so we have tickets to see The Bellvederes, a swingin' new soul girl group that one of my sisters adores. My New Year's Day ritual for the past ten years has included an early morning trip to my local record-and-DVD store's insane annual sale. Everything in the whole store is buy one get one free. Well...it used to be everything including DVD TV boxed sets, but I think those are excluded now.

Lyzzibug ~Still Breathing~ (lyzzibug) | 708 comments Popping firecrackers outside and hopefully going to be early. I can never seem to bring in the New Year any other way but looking at the inside of my eyelids.

message 142: by [deleted user] (new)

Absolutely HATE New Year's Eve. Hope to be asleep by ten.

message 143: by Jammies (new)

Jammies I can't remember the last time I actually celebrated New Year's Eve, but I know for sure that I'll be in bed this year well before midnight, as I have a two hour drive very early on New Year's morning.

message 144: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, NY Eve is turning out to be a wash, and that's ok by me. At first my wife wanted to have people over, but not too many, and that got too complicated, so fuck it, we're staying in. I'm making pizza and drinking coffee, the boys will probably play video games. Works for me.

Where in the hell are you going NY morning, Jammers?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) It's been warm for most of the week, and all of a sudden NY eve is going to get to below zero, so forget that.

Movies and snacks at home it is.

message 146: by Jammies (new)

Jammies RA, I'm going to Columbus for Christmas, Part II. Part I was in Dallas with my little brother and his family, and Part II will be with my middle little brother and his family.

Boo hoo!
