Jennifer Reeves (barefootdokusha) I have a Kindle Keyboard and it's 13 months old (go figure) and it died today or something. Its frozen. I managed to reset to factory settings and then it froze, then rebooted, then froze again. Amazon says it will cost me $65 and they will send me another one. I LOVE my Kindle but at the point I can't see forking out $65 for a new one and it only last a year. Anyone else have any problems?

Steven Stickler | 10 comments I had an issue once when I did a hard reset and the battery was low and it went all funky on me; after fully charging the battery and a hard reset it was fine.

3 kindles, never any other problems except occasional freeze-ups which always responded to a hard reset.

Maybe you're just unlucky :(

Gill (lockwdg) | 49 comments I had my first kindle for just under 12mths and then it froze. Luckily it was just in warranty (by 4 days) and Amazon sent me another. I also had problems with this one and they had to send me another. So far this 3rd one has been running fine since August 2011. I am reserving judgement until the year is up!

This happened just today. My Kindle froze on the screensaver and when I flick the switch to wake it up, it doesn't change or the green light doesn't go on.

What do I do?

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Please help.

Gill (lockwdg) | 49 comments Have you tried holding the switch down until it turns off completely and then switching on again?

Yep. Nothing happens. Panicking now. I had 119 books on it. I'll try it again...hold on...

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Nope. Can I get it repaired somehow?

Does this freezing thing happen to everyone?

message 10: by Gill (new)

Gill (lockwdg) | 49 comments Have you contacted Amazon? You won't have lost the 119 books as they will still be on your Amazon account and can be put back on another kindle if necessary. I didn't lose any of mine.

Ok, thanks Gill :D

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll do that now. :D

Patricia (pg4003) | 243 comments Did you try a hard reset? Hold the power button over for a full 30 seconds. Don't guess, count it down.

message 14: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Reeves (barefootdokusha) Nothing seemed to help mine yesterday. I ended up being able to do a hard reset, restore to factory settings....froze, then rebooted, then froze again! I went again and charged it last night. Still froze. I'm so frustrated with it I left it at home. I can't stand to look at it right now. I spoke with Amazon twice. Since I am almost a month out of warrenty it will cost $65 for them to send me a replacement. :( I'm in the middle of moving so no Kindle for me for a few months. I had about 30 books on there to review these next 2 months! Argh!

This won't fix your Kindle but how about downloading the Kindle for PC App and reading on your computer? You can access your books through Amazon's "Manage My Kindle". Just download them to the Kindle App on your computer.

message 16: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Reeves (barefootdokusha) I dont have computer, but I have downloaded the Kindle App for my phone and iPad. I don't like th backighting from those. until I.havethe money I.guess I willhave to listen to audiobooks while at work and read print books at home.

message 17: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Reeves (barefootdokusha) I haven't tried connecting to USB aside from charging it. I use to computers at work. I'll have to bring my Kindle with me tomorrow and try that!

message 18: by Weenie (new)

Weenie | 55 comments My 2 year old Kindle Keyboard was playing up yesterday - frozen at screensaver, no green light and not even a hard reset would shift it. The USB cured it though, or rather the plug.

And yes, I have one of those original Amazon leather covers (no light) but have never had an real problems previously.

message 19: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Reeves (barefootdokusha) I couldn't get the computer at work to recognize the Kindle. But I plugged it to the wall again (it has had over 12 hours of charging and still had an orange light) for a couple of minutes and it restarted again.... :/ Maybe just a bad battery? I'm letting it charge while it's working. Turned the wireless off. i really hope that it starts working. I miss it soooo much! I can't finish my book and I was 90-something % finished with it!

I hope it clears up for you. In the mean time you could finish your book on the cloud.

message 21: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Reeves (barefootdokusha) The book is a off file. could I use the cloud reader forit?

message 22: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Reeves (barefootdokusha) That was suppose to day the book is a pdf file. :D

Charlene | 59 comments Jennifer wrote: "That was suppose to day the book is a pdf file. :D"

I just tried to open a PDF in my library in the cloud and couldn't so I guess the answer to your question is no. I hope your Kindle is up and working well. Sometimes plugging it into the USB charger and the wall corrects problems. Good luck.

P.s. I know how the auto complete makes up its own words. Sometimes it can be embarrassing.

Ralph Gallagher | 327 comments Mod
The Kindle cloud reader is for mobi/azw files. Virtually every computer can open a PDF file natively so there's no point in making the cloud reader read them. Especially since most major browsers can read them too.

message 25: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Reeves (barefootdokusha) Aw... :( I don't own a computer.

message 26: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) Just within the last 3 days, my new Kindle keyboard (only about 4 months old) has started not holding a charge. I fully charge it at night, then over the course of the day.....without being used, my wifi is even off......it dros down to only about 30% charged. Any ideas? I'm so upset!

Help! :(

message 27: by Betsy (new)

Betsy If it's only 4 months old, it's under warranty. Maybe Amazon will replace it. I've never had any trouble like that (knock wood), but many of the posts in this group indicate that Amazon customer service is very good.

message 28: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) I've spoken to customer service several times now. We've tried several things so far, including resetting to factory settings today. They said they would call me in 2 days and if that didn't help they will replace it.

message 29: by Laura (new)

Laura | 3 comments I have a Kindle Touch, just over a month old, that I purchased at Best Buy. The screen is completely unresponsive as of the last 3 days. It won't even turn off if I hold the power button for almost a minute. I am extremely frustrated, as I am going on vacation and just bought 4 new books on it.... My battery is at least 75% charged. The screen keeps flashing at me when it's on, and is only displaying a half screen, the top is blank white. I have no idea what to do. Thoughts?

message 30: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Call Amazon customer service.

message 31: by Michael (new)

Michael Smith (mikes_2011) | 8 comments Well that's not encouraging, I just bought a Kindle Touch a few weeks ago. Let us know how well Amazon's customer service handles the issue.

message 32: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) So far so good on my issue. After resetting to factory settings, all seems great & its holding it's charge! Yay! Customer Service never gave up! :)

message 33: by Laura (new)

Laura | 3 comments How do you restore to factory settings? I am unable to use the touch screen at all right now and can't see the menu, is there another way to reset it? I may stop by Best Buy after work to see if they can help.

message 34: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) From the home page, you click on menu, then go down to settings. Once there click on menu again. That will bring down a screen that includes restore to factory settings as an option. Just know it will delete everything off of it. You will have to put everything back on it.

I do recommend you contact custmer service. They are great & will help walk you through whatever needs to be done.

message 35: by Michael (new)

Michael Smith (mikes_2011) | 8 comments Yeah with the Touch you have to be able to manipulate the screen in order to do anything. You are kinda hosed in that respect. I have heard of people connecting the device via the USB cord to the computer and that seemingly can help in situations like this where the Kindle seems to be unresponsive, but I have a feeling in your case it's going to need a replacement. Did Amazon support help at all?

message 36: by Laura (new)

Laura | 3 comments Thanks, everyone! I am in and out of meetings at work today, so I will have to wait to call customer support. I'll update here after I speak to them!

message 37: by Clare K. R. (new)

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) Laura, I would definitely recommend calling Amazon support before trying Best Buy. Best Buy may or may not have people trained in troubleshooting for Kindle, but Amazon has people whose entire job is Kindle. I've always had great experiences with them.

message 38: by Michael (new)

Michael Smith (mikes_2011) | 8 comments That's kinda what I was figuring too... hopefully they can just overnight you a new one and then you can return that one whenever you can. As long as you can still connect to your computer over USB you can back up any books that aren't already on Whispernet (if any)...
