Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments Just got home from a jog so thought I'd drop in to say hi. And I'll ask a question or two while I'm here.

Do you have a writing schedule? And do you plot your novels?

message 202: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Patti and I are obviously incom-Patti-ble.
I'll get me coat.
Eventually.

If you could have any actors playing the characters in the undead books, who would you choose for each?

I hadn't thought about that, but I did think about it long and hard so here we go.

Agent Ward - Nathan Fillion (bound to be a crowd pleaser)

Mrs Freidriksen - Catherine Deneuve

Penny Kilkenny - Kate Winslet/Keira Knightly (tough choice)

Veronika Bevilacqua - Salma Hayek

Mettles - Ron Perlman (who's also my choice for Balrek by the way)

Hey Shaun, how you doing?

No, my life doesn't permit anything on a schedule.

I wrote this earlier about the planning:

"Writing a book is like a journey for me and when I start I know where I’m departing from, what the destination is and some of the stops along the way, but the only way to know what the scenery is going to be like is to ride the train. It’s the only metaphor that I can come up with. Some scenes are planned out, some characters’ arcs are planned out, but the rest comes out of the writing and I discover a lot of it as I go."

Minor characters especially are something that I like to discover as they wander shell-shocked into the storyline.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I just saw the words Nathan Fillion and dissolved into a puddle. Perfect choice!

D.D. Chant (DDChant) | 7663 comments Hi Darren!

I'm late, I'm sorry but I do have a question! Sorry if it has already been asked!

Do you know how your book is going to end right from the beginning???

How much of your story do you plan out before hand and how much just comes to you as the characters develop??? :-D

message 216: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'll have to google Fillion. No idea!

If it meant that I got to cavort with Salma Hayek then I am there.

message 218: by Emma (new)

Emma (emzibah) | 4125 comments Yep Nathan Fillion is definitely the perfect choice! I can see Kate Winslet more than Keira knightly as Penny :-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Ignite wrote: "I'll have to google Fillion. No idea!"

IGNITE!!! You haven't lived!

message 220: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I totally agree with the cockiness of Nathan Fillion for Ward.

message 221: by Shaun (new)

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments Good answer. It's pretty much how I write too. That way I'm as surprised as any other reader when things happen that I wasn't expecting.

message 222: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Darren, in my review I tried to describe Agent Ward with characters that everyone more or less knows... maybe I was totally wrong, but am curious to know how you'd describe him using movie/book characters that we all know of :)

DD hi. Glad you could make it. I just answered that for Shaun a few posts back (212 I think), but the ending is one of the things that I know first.

I love it when a book takes me somewhere I hadn't envisaged, but it can be a pain sometimes and I've had to abandon more than one manuscript where the characters just refused to behave themselves.

Courgettes? I've had a few - but then again, too few to mention!

Sadie Forsythe "Agent Ward - Nathan Fillion" to be expected from someone who allowed himself to be inspired by SERENITY. I'm sold.

I said to someone recently that it's not about face or body. I could fall in love with a brain in a jar if it had the right character/personality.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments errrm - isn't this supposed to be about Darren...?

Ward is a bit like James Bond as he was written. He's a tough guy and doesn't suffer fools gladly. He's got the adventurous nature of Indiana Jones, but there's a streak of darkness that means if it weren't for his ironclad code of honour he could easily be working for the bad guys. He loves women, but only strong ones and the looks are secondary.(OK I know that he only ever seems to be surrounded by beautiful women, but give the guy a break).

The most important thing about Penny Kilkenny is her impish, playful, warm quality and I see that in both Keira and Kate. I don't get quite so hung up on the physical appearance side of things.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Do you ever put other people you know into your books?

Fiction books? Nope, not ever. Considering most of the characters in my books are pretty insane that would have been difficult for me before starting with this forum.
